Staff members also wore shirts bearing the names of their alma maters and offered students advice and answered questions about the college experience. “This is truly a culminating, celebratory event for our seniors after years of hardwork and planning for their futures,” said Frank Stazzone, Director of Guidance at Seaford High School. “Their success sets an important example for our underclassmen as they begin to explore their post-graduate options and reinforces the fact that the decisions they make when they enter high school will have a direct impact on where they go to college. We hope this day inspires them so they can get accepted to the best college that is right for them and their future goals.” Stazzone added that the high school is always exploring ways to better prepare students for college, such as hosting evening college planning events for sophomores and juniors, and providing opportunities to help students boost their SAT and ACT scores. Students from the Class of 2017 were accepted to such institutions as Cornell University, The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina; CUNY Macaulay Honors Program, University of Delaware, Fordham University, Northeastern University, Northwestern University, Villanova University and University of Miami. Some students are setting their sights on venturing to other parts of the country, including Maine, Florida, New Mexico and Hawaii. Many plan to attend SUNY schools, including Binghamton, Stony Brook, Geneseo and Buffalo. And others will study at local institutions, including St. John’s University, Adelphi, Hofstra, Molloy, Long Island University, Farmingdale State College and Nassau Community College.

I recently had the opportunity to attend a journalism forum at The Paley Center for Media in Manhattan. Titled “The Future of Local News: Trust, Truth & The Bottom Line,” this summit brought together some of the best and the brightest in the industry to discuss what many have summarily dismissed as a dying field. I am happy to report that, after listening to several engaging panels touching on everything from politics to nonprofit upstarts to the pros and cons of social media in the information age, I came away with an even deeper sense of confidence that journalism is, in fact, here to stay. Sure, the fourth estate may have hit some bumps in the road of late; but, in essence, these
obstacles have only helped those truly reputable media outlets to gain a stronger foothold. Too much of anything is a bad thing; this is a commonly held opinion. But, to be able to harness this influx of information and utilize it in such a way that is beneficial, well, that is a opportunity that should not be squandered. It may take time and research to discern what is truly valuable and accurate information, but why shouldn’t we devote that kind of effort to educating ourselves? It hardly seems a steep price to pay, in my estimation. The hope is that, as the sources of “news” multiply and morph, future generations will increasingly become experts at determining what

is reliable. Not to throw the phrase back in my day around too lightly but… back when I was in college, media was pretty much defined as print or broadcast; newspapers, magazines, television, radio. Social media was only just beginning to take off, and its potential as a legitimate source of news – breaking or otherwise – was as yet unanticipated. Fast forward to the present day, when your average elementary school student is “plugged in” to his/her own cell phone throughout the day. My, how times have changed. Regardless of whether we support this development, the fact is - it’s happening. Best to jump on board and learn to harness the power of the media. It’s here to stay.
who trains with a private coach. He has competed in the Weight Throw and Shotput events in the spring season for four years and the Shotput and Hammer Throw in the winter season for two years. Among his accolades, Andrew represented Seaford at the National Track & Field competition, placing in the top 60 percent in the Weight Throw event. He also placed 12th in the state, was Conference Champion and All-County for Weight Throw. In addition, the winter team won the conference championship and he was named AllCounty for Shotput. Andrew said he “really connected” with Queens College, where his private
coach is head coach of the Track & Field team. When he is off the field, he plans on studying political science or criminal justice. Seaford Track & Field Coaches Ed Trentowski and Kimberly Cooke described Andrew as “a hard worker who is determined, who helps other athletes and is a pleasure to have on the team.” Now heading to Clarkson, Michael said he has been playing baseball “for as long as he can remember.” According to Seaford Baseball Coach Mike Milano, who has coached Michael every summer in baseball camp since first grade, “He is everything about the sport that I love. He, himself, has turned into an elite ball
player who can do literally everything on the field.” Michael, who was a catcher but now plays shortstop, is the captain of the team, which is currently 11-2. Last year he was named All-League and the team made it to the quarterfinals both his sophomore and junior year. He was also captain of the JV team as a freshman. Michael said he picked Clarkson, located in upstate Potsdam, because it was a great fit for him. He plans on studying engineering. “Both Andrew and Michael are such great representatives of our school and our athletic program,” said Athletic Director Thomas Condon. “They are products of hard
