Fire Island Lighthouse Events The Fire Island Lighthouse Preservation Society will present the following: Plein Air Art Studio Friday and Saturday, May 25th and 26th Artists from Wet Paints Studio Group will be painting on site in the Lighthouse area. Anyone for Dessert? I have had my fair share of dining adventures through the years, most of which have since been reflected upon with a degree of amusement in hindsight. At the time, however, well let’s just say there are moments when our entire eating experience seemed to be part of a rather lengthy segment of Candid Camera. There was the time, while up in Saratoga Springs one summer years ago, that our meal was interrupted by a rather persistent fly. Upon swatting said flying creature, he began a free-fall into what had been - up to that point - a rather enjoyable pasta entree of my mother’s. As she watched, horrified, the formerly agile winged critter began what appeared to be a slow dog paddle through the sauce. Both my father and I were in complete hysterics by this point. When the waiter stopped by the table to check on whether we were enjoying the meal, my mother pointed to the at this point - motionless fly and replied, “Well, I was enjoying it very much, but…” The waiter, without missing a beat, shrugged
and remarked, “Oh yeah, that happens a lot - summer and all.” No offer of a replacement, no sympathy for the ruined meal, no nothing. The customer is always right, indeed. Of course, there are times when the customer seems obliged to seat him/herself, place the order and perhaps even head back into the kitchen to cook it as well, such is the poor quality of service. On the other end of the spectrum, I’ve been witness to a waitress literally sweeping a plate out from under my friend’s poised fork, determining that she was, in fact, finished. As we sat, incredulous over this turn of events, we didn’t know whether to laugh or demand a refund. After about two hours of nursing our drinks and “contemplating” dessert, more appetizers, perhaps a breakfast course… we decided to take the check. Oddly enough, the waitress didn’t seem amused. Fast forward to this past Cinco de Mayo, a “holiday” I have never made a special point to celebrate
aside from perhaps ordering a taco or two at a take-out restaurant. This year, my friend and I (different friend, same Candid Camera tendencies) decided to wait it out to dine in style at a genuine Mexican establishment on the busiest Saturday night of the year. After about an hour, we were seated. We ordered drinks, appetizers and entrees, all of which arrived in quick succession. Having already decided what we wanted for dessert, we patiently waited for the waiter to return. And waited…. And waited… Each time he passed our table, all attempts to make eye contact and flag him down went unnoticed. We were, we determined, completely invisible. Nearly an hour later, a random waitress happened to glance our way. Can we order dessert from you? Certainly. Nearly another 30 minutes elapsed before our own waiter, the one who had seemingly abandoned our table, returned. Dessert? We looked at each other. We had now been in this venue for precisely four hours. Cheers, indeed.

May’s Charity of the Month is:
Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of- theart footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. Every day, they have a different school
drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping. Pal-O-Mine has two major fundraising events that are coming up in June. One is their 16th annual “Day at the Races,” which will be on June 8th at Belmont Racetrack. This is held the day before the Belmont Stakes and is a wonderful outing, offering lunch, a premium open bar and door prizes. www.GOTRLongIsland.org Girls on the Run is an empowerment program for girls in third through eighth grade that inspires them to be joyful, healthy and confident, while using a fun, interactive curriculum that creatively integrates running. Meeting twice a week in small teams for the 10-week season, volunteer coaches teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. Their Spring 5K will take place on June 2nd at Hofstra University. They are in need of volunteer coaches (no running experience is required) who have a desire to make an impact on the lives of young girls. All training is provided. They also need volunteers to help out at their upcoming 5K in the areas of: registration, hospitality, pre-run fun and course cheer. Record Breaking Attendance The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) is pleased to announce that the 31st annual Adele C. Smithers Angel Ball, celebrating 62 years of “Recovery… One Step at a Time” was held on Monday, April 30, 2018 at the Garden City Hotel. The annual LICADD event raised over $350,000 to support LICADD’s substance abuse counseling and educational programs serving Long Islanders in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. LICADD was honored to host a record breaking number of guests and sponsors who
graciously believe in vital importance of the LICADD mission. The arrangement of darks and lights can create an atmosphere making the same scene appear ominous or contemplative, violent or tranquil. Use of color can create radiant light or reflective light. Your work may explore the correlation of time and light: the flat light of mid-day, the long shadows of late afternoon, the soft misty morning light, or the mysterious light of evening. Explore
how the sources of light affect the subject and its surroundings. Do you strive for the dramatic or theatrical chiaroscuro? Artificial light, natural light, reflective light all have their own qualities. Does your abstract work express a quality of light through your use of color, creating harmony or disharmony? Values of color create patterns of lights and darks. It’s all about the light. About the juror: In Karen Levitov’s four years as Director and Curator of the Paul W. Bully Rewind was the theme of a video project in Stephanie Bartkus’ health classes at Seaford High School. Students worked in groups to create videos that simulated bullying incidents, then followed up with “What Should Have Happened” scenarios. The videos were made as part of the stress and bullying unit. Each project started out with a scene of a student being pushed, insulted or taunted for being different, while bystanders did nothing to stop it. The second half of each video shows the same act of bullying, but with another student intervening. In some of the scenarios,
the bullying victim copes with a video of the incident being sent around. One student shares a video of bullying with the assistant principal, who then addresses the situation with the bullies and suspends them. The students wrote the scripts, filmed the videos and edited using iMovie. The completed videos ranged from a minute and a half to seven minutes long. Videos included messages such as “If you see something, say something” and “Choose to be an upstander.” Ms. Bartkus said that the project gave students the opportunity to understand the emotional toll that
bullying takes on people, as well as the serious consequences that bullies can face. The purpose was to promote a school culture of acceptance, inclusion and tolerance. Because most of the students who made the videos are freshman and sophomores, she hopes the messages will stick with them throughout high school and beyond. “This is an assignment the students will remember for a long time,” Ms. Bartkus said. “This was an authentic way to prevent bullying and practice kindness and respect. I’m really proud of the students because the videos were very well done.”

The stations were led by volunteers from the National Junior Honor Society and Student Council at Seaford Middle School, and from the sophomore class and science research and American Sign Language programs at Seaford High School. Eighth-graders in the robotics course and students from the high school robotics club showcased their robots. In classrooms, children and their parents could do hands-on activities together with the help of Harbor teachers. Students in kindergarten through second grade were invited to make catapults using
spoons, Popsicle sticks and rubber bands, and hovercrafts using a CD, pop-up lid and balloon. Thirdthrough fifthgraders built cardboard mazes and balloon cars. Assistant Principal Caroline Schozer said the evening was designed to showcase the school’s STEAM program and the resources that students use on a regular basis. “It was a night filled with activities that both parents and their children could enjoy,” Ms. Schozer said. “What better way is there to learn than through fun, hands-on activities that families can do together? We thank our teachers and staff, as well as the student volunteers from the high school and middle school, for making STEAM night a great success.”

More than 150 families came out to Seaford Harbor Elementary School’s second annual STEAM night on April 26th, which featured dozens of activities showcasing science, technology, engineering, the arts and math. In the all-purpose room and gymnasium, students were able to visit a variety of centers with hands-on projects. They made paper airplanes, constructed bridges, crafted kaleidoscopes and built boats out of cork. In a tribute to “Star Wars,” children used straws, batteries and small lights bulbs to make light sabers. On stage, they used iPads to control Dot and Dash robots. One of the popular stations was Foamy Fountain. Students mixed

Exercise Adds Up Students from Seaford Manor Elementary School and Seaford Middle School have been working hard to stay physically fit. Children in the UP and CDP classes participated in Achilles Kids, a walking, running and rolling program that encourages regular exercise. Over the course of the year, the middle school
students completed a full 26.2-mile marathon by running or walking during physical education classes. Their goal was one mile each time. Out with the old and in with the new. Seaford School District welcomed a new athletic director after Tom Condon’s retirement last school year. Michael Spreckels, previously known as athletic trainer at Seaford, took on the title of athletic director and physical education teacher. Physical education programs are under pressure by New York State (NYS) to introduce new Physical Education, (“new P.E .”), a program where good and effective teaching takes place, allowing for academic learning. “New P.E.” also allows students the opportunity to experiment their skills, in a healthy judgment free environment where students don’t fear failure but prosper and work towards success. However, since this “new P.E.” is not enforced, but merely encouraged, not many school districts practice it in their curriculum. New Athletic Director Welcomed the knowledge to live a healthy life well into their adult years. To achieve this, Spreckels has added cooperative problem solving, fitness, yoga and frisbee. He also offers T-25 which is an intense full-body workout video and aerial football, which is essentially football but with a lighter ball and less contact. Because “new P.E.” focuses on academic learning and making students physically literate a lot of cognitive learning takes place. Spreckels hopes to eventually make physical education part of students cumulative G.P.A., just as their other academic classes are. “Our program focuses on promoting fitness for life, and recreation for life,” said Spreckels. “We want our kids to feel comfortable in their own skin and their own ability”. As athletic director, Spreckels also oversees the school’s athletic teams. Big changes are underway there too. The cheerleading club has officially made the transition to a team. Seaford High School also introduced a dance club to their extracurricular sports program. “Mr. Spreckels was really supportive in getting the dance club up and running, he seems really happy about it,” said Emma Marcolini, a freshman in the dance club. He’s been working in the Seaford School District for 17 years. He was the athletic trainer for the district for 16 years and a physical education teacher for 15 years at the Harbor elementary school. Safety has always been Spreckels main priority for his students. He is a member of the districts safety committee and concussion management team as well as a certified American Red Cross instructor. Spreckels goal as athletic director is to make Seaford the gold standard regarding safety for student athletes. When he was working as athletic trainer he would certify a variety of different athletes in the district in
CPR to ensure ultimate safety on the field. Spreckels was presented with the Viking Helmet award, which is given to a teacher that embodies Seaford pride. “Working with Mike Spreckels is really a privilege. He’s a guy who absolutely enjoys his job, enjoys working with the students, and his energy and excitement are contagious,” said McCormack. “You can’t be around a guy like him, who is so happy doing what he does, and not share in the excitement.” Spreckels attended Manhattan College for his undergraduate degree in athletic training and physical education. He got his masters at Hofstra University in physical education, as well as an advanced masters from Stony Brook in educational leadership. “I knew when I was a junior in college that working in athletics and with children was a goal of mine,” said Spreckels. Spreckels encourages his students to be the best person they can be while promoting physical fitness and self-efficacy. “Failure is a good thing as long as you are able to learn from it,” said Spreckels. “Once you no longer learn from your failures you stop growing as an individual.” In the field of physical education and being responsible for students knowledge regarding their health and wellbeing, Spreckels says it’s important to remain reflective in his career. “There is always room for growth,” said Spreckels. “You learn what to do and what not to do.”

Students Succeed in Poetry To mark National Poetry Month in April, Seaford High School hosted its second annual poetry contest. Students were invited to submit their original works, which were then judged by faculty members. The grand prizewinner was freshman Tyler Reeves for his free verse poem “The Boy in the Box.” He received a gift package from Moe’s Southwest Grill, which included $25 in gift certificates plus a
Visa gift card. “I’m very happy. I’ve only started writing poetry recently,” Tyler said, adding that he has mostly written novels and short stories. Other students recognized for their poems included junior Matthew Beller for his poem “The Writer in the Heart,” freshman Juliana Boden for “With Every Passing Night” and junior Brandon Cepeda for “Optimistic Raid.” Brandon was also
a winner in last year’s inaugural contest. They each received $10 to Moe’s and a Dunkin Donuts gift card. Librarian Joanna McCloskey and English language arts teacher Justin McCormack organized the contest and judged submissions along with other teachers in the English department. Ms. McCloskey added that Seaford is looking to partner with other districts to publish student poetry.
