The 6th Annual A Day At The Races will be held on Saturday, June 21st, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Belmont Racetrack. This premiere social event helps fund the MDA Summer Camp program. The local MDA Summer Camp is July 19th through 25th in Center Moriches, NY and provides children age 6-17, from Long Island, the Boroughs and Westchester areas, who are living with neuromuscular disease a one-week sleepover camp where they can make memories that will last a lifetime. The cost to send just one kid to camp is over $800. MDA picks up the tab for all of our campers, and receives no government funding. MDA Summer Camp can take place thanks to the generous donations provided through generous donors and great programs like A Day At The Races.

One Of Those Days By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Did you ever have one of those days when... well, let’s just leave it at that. We’ve all surely had them, whatever it is they entail, which usually leads to unnecessary levels of irritation and aggravation. And, more often than not, we are quick to blame others for the series of events which unfolds. Seems only fair. Maybe there is something to that old “got up on the wrong side of the bed” excuse; perhaps our days are destined to

progress precisely how our respective moods dictate. If this is true, then we may as well just crawl back under the covers and call it a day, no? No sense even trying to give it a go and turn things around. Or so many would have you believe… The thing is, if you want to walk around being miserable, go for it. But is it really necessary to “spread the joy” as it were and ensure that everyone you come in contact with is similarly infected with your dark pessimism? Does misery truly love company that much? I think not.

Why the rant on this particular occasion? Just timely observations is all – as one black cloud-carrying individual after another passes through, it is all one can do to stay focused on the task at hand. And that is – to live each and every day to the fullest, to do at least one thing exclusively for yourself and to refuse to let others drag you down into the abyss alongside them. The words are simple enough…now to put them into practice so that “one of those days” doesn’t become every day.

Boots on the Ground NY is a team of Veterans & Supporters that care about the Veterans of America, by collecting & delivering food and furniture for Veterans and their families, many that have been overlooked and forgotten. It was a day of excitement, unity and promise for the future as Seaford High School staff and students came together to mark the college commitment deadline, May 1st, with the school’s 3rd Annual College Awareness Day. Students and staff wearing their college sweatshirts and T-shirts congratulated one another and sparked conversations about their next steps after graduation. Some students were accepted to the University of Virginia, University of Pennsylvania, Boston College, New York University and Fordham University. Others will venture to SUNY schools, including Binghamton, Stony Brook and Buffalo. DEDICATION CEREMONY - Congressman Pete King commended Eagle Scout candidate Cory Levy of Seaford on his creation of the ATF Senior Special Agent John Capano memorial gazebo in Washington Park in Seaford as part of his Eagle Scout project. Senior Special Agent Capano, a Massapequa resident, who was raised in Seaford, was killed while attempting to stop a robbery in a local drug store. Life Skills Suite A newly renovated Life Skills Suite at Seaford High School is now a brighter, better equipped learning environment for special-needs students and a welcome source of revenue for the district. The freshly updated 2,000-square-foot space features many new amenities needed for students to develop everyday life skills. It boasts a new kitchen complete with wood cabinetry and ample counter space, new energy-efficient appliances, including a dishwasher, a full-size stove and oven, a full-size refrigerator and a laundry area with a washer, dryer and ironing board. There’s a designated hygiene area with a sink and mirror and a fold-out bed to teach students how to change sheets and make a bed. Updated, more private classrooms enhance the learning experience and upgrades to plumbing, heating and electric are projected to lower energy costs. The suite currently services 18 students, nine from the district and nine from surrounding schools that do not have facilities to accommodate their special-needs students. But up to 24 students can be accommodated.

“Renovating the Life Skills Suite was an ideal way to keep our own Seaford students in their home district where they can attend school with their peers and a prudent fiscal endeavor because the facility is large enough to service other students who are in need of a
