sort. Expectations rarely hold up to the standards we have imposed. If you had asked me twelve years ago what I would be doing in the year 2017, I can’t say I would have pinpointed my current situation for what it is; nor would I have had any real inkling as to what would transpire in the decade to come. There is something to be said for longevity, to be sure. As long as you are able to find fulfillment in your daily life, who’s to say what you “should” be doing at any stage? Only you. The calendar is merely a guideline, a means of breaking up the years into more manageable chunks of time by which to take a step back and evaluate. One day at a time, that’s about all most

of us can handle. Some will be good, some bad; but in the end, they will steer your life in a particular direction. That, you can be sure of. Who knows what the next twelve years might bring. Maybe I’ll be writing my 1000th column for South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Perhaps I’ll be taking photos as I journey from one corner of the world to another, journaling as I travel to undiscovered lands. Or maybe, I’ll have gotten all that out of my system and decided to settle down in a house in the suburbs with the white picket fence. Who knows. In the meantime, another May 2nd has come and gone, very different from the last and most likely nothing like the next. Only time will tell.

with Jamie Lynn Ryan I recently celebrated my twelve-year anniversary of working here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. How quickly time does fly. I can’t say I recall the exact start date of any previous jobs; but this one happened to coincide with my grandmother’s birthday, and so it was instantly commemorated for being just a bit more special. Bittersweet, perhaps, since her passing… but May 2nd shall always hold a place in my heart. The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Seaford Harbor Elementary School was STEAMing with activity as students, parents and teachers came together for a hands-on, interactive night of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics. A spectacle of 21st century learning skills in action, students were engaged in collaboration, communication, critical thinking and problem solving as they took on a host of challenges. In their classrooms, students with their parents made film canister rockets that were set off with some water and antacid tablets, studied reflecting light by constructing kaleidoscopes, created tensile bubbles with three-dimensional bubble wands, and examined how electricity flows by developing electrical circuits on a flat piece of paper using copper tape and surface-mounted LEDs. In the all purpose room and the gym were interactive displays set up by various organizations and businesses. There were coding and robotics activities by We Connect the Dots, a project-based

experimental learning company, as well as the Seaford High School Robotics Club; math activities by Mathnasium Learning Center, and science activities by the Long Island Science Center and Mad Science Group, Inc. Also getting in on the excitement were the Boy Scouts who showcased their Pinewood Derby cars and demonstrated speed, velocity and force. Students also had fun making tangrams, creating optical illusions, creating rainsticks, a musical instrument that sounds like falling rain; making rockets and testing them, and making paper airplanes testing how far they can fly. Many booths included trifold information boards and a series of books related to the topics for students to explore. According to John Striffolino, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Personnel, the district recognizes the importance of STEAM activities and is incorporating them into the curriculum as much as possible. “The activities are highly engaging and the students are excited about learning

in this manner,” he said. Harbor School’s first STEAM Night began as a simple idea during a conversation with the school’s Shared Decision Making (SDM) Committee, according to Harbor Assistant Principal Caroline Schozer, who led the coordination of the event. “We all agreed that the school would greatly benefit from STEAM activities and thought this would be a great way to bring the Harbor families together to work on STEAM projects,” she said. “Together with Harbor Principal Thomas Burke and the SDM Committee, we were able to get multiple organizations to participate in the events of the night and I thank them for taking the time to share their expertise with the students and for helping make the evening a success. In the end, the Harbor staff, parents, and most importantly, the students, walked away with an appreciation for STEAM and a night of learning with the Harbor Community.” The school plans to offer STEAM Night as an annual event.

A person is 1.5 to 2.4 times more likely to have coronary heart disease if he or she is inactive. Adult (and childhood) obesity/

overweight level continues to increase: 65% of all Adults are obese or overweight. There will be morning and afternoon shotgun starts to accommodate all participants for the golf event at the Meadow Brook Club and an afternoon shotgun start at Piping Rock. There will also be themed holes and raffles along the 18-hole course. Cocktail dinner reception and awards will follow at the Meadow Brook Club for both courses. For tennis, a light morning breakfast will be served with round robin play to follow. Lunch will be served after the tournament. Brisk walking around the golf course and playing tennis has many proven health benefits. Adults

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is the recipient of a grant from Kat’s Ribbon of Hope (KROH) that will allow the program to expand its services for bilingual social work/ patient navigation at local hospitals. Kat’s Ribbon of Hope, Inc., established in 2013, provides financial assistance to women who otherwise would not be able to afford early detection and treatment services for breast cancer. These women die at twice the rate of those who can afford medical attention. Currently bilingual social workers/patient navigators from the Adelphi Program meet with patients immediately following their breast

cancer diagnosis at Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC). These staff members provide on-going support and follow patients through diagnosis and treatment including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and reconstruction. The program at NUMC addresses disparities in mortality by providing psychosocial support, counseling, patient navigation and concrete services to underserved patients with breast cancer. The funds received from KROH have enabled the breast cancer program to hire a second parttime bilingual social worker/patient navigator. Additionally, in June, the program will begin Spanish

language support groups at community centers for patients and their families. “Kat’s Ribbon of Hope is very proud to continue our collaboration with the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program by funding an additional patient navigator to help serve the many women and men in the community facing breast cancer,” says Despina Yarian, cofounder and chair of KROH. The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, established in 1980, offers free emotional support and information to people coping with cancer.
