Seaford High School junior Lauren King received the Rensselaer Medal Award, which means she could earn a scholarship valued at $25,000 per year if she is accepted into and chooses to attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The addition of the Literacy Lounge, adjacent to the library, serves as just another resource for teachers and students. A grand opening celebration was held before school on April 26th. The Literacy Lounge is a full-size classroom with thousands of books. On one set of shelves, books are arranged by guided reading level, so teachers can select materials to support students based upon their individual needs. Another set of shelves features class sets of books, and yet another includes nonfiction books

relating to science and social studies. “Here in our Literacy Lounge, teachers have access to a variety of books and resources to enhance their teachers and make learning come alive for their students,” Principal Debra Emmerich said. The room also serves as a setting for literacybased activities. A secondgrade class recently held a poetry café in the room. After learning about the elements of poetry and reading different examples, students then wrote their own poems, with each selecting his or her favorite original piece to read aloud. The literacy lounge will also
host teacher training for Teacher’s College Reading and Writing Project workshops, and serve as a spot for students to meet with visiting authors. Assistant Principal Mary Ellen Kakalos described it as “the perfect setting to celebrate reading and writing.” The Literacy Lounge has been named the Pat Gelling Book Room in honor of a former assistant principal. The adjacent library has also been recently renovated. A wall was removed between two rooms to create a more open space. It features a new circulation desk, tables, chairs, bookshelves and interactive whiteboard.

Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age, attend a volunteer orientation (orientations are held monthly), complete a training program and be available to volunteer a minimum of four hours per week. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping. Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of- theart footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy,

Life After High School Seaford High School seniors looked to the future as they wore shirts representing their future colleges and universities on May 1st, which is National Decision Day. College Awareness Day is an annual tradition in Seaford for soon-to-be graduates. Members of the Class of 2018 showcased the different schools they will attend on Long Island, in New York State and throughout the country. Class President Olivia Pyryt said that the shirts were a conversation starter, as seniors asked each other about their prospective majors and the reasons they chose a particular college. She noted
there were a large number of colleges represented, including the Fashion Institute of Technology where she will attend. “I like getting to know where my classmates are going next year, and getting to see the different directions that everyone is going in,” Olivia said. Teachers, guidance counselors and administrators also wore the shirts of their alma maters. Guidance Department Chairman Frank Stazzone said College Awareness Day is a celebration of education. “It’s an exciting time for our students to show off their official plans for life
after Seaford High School, as well as for the entire faculty to demonstrate support and encouragement identifying their schools of choice when they were in the same position,” Mr. Stazzone said. “All over the building you see faculty members and students, wearing the same college shirt, discussing a new found bond that unites them under a new identity. It helps the students gain a little more insight into the unknown future as well as show them the successful career possibilities that await seeing their teacher find success from the same school.”

Hot ‘n Cold all the pretty perennials at the nursery, and wind up purchasing far too many tulips, daffodils and hyacinths for someone who has nowhere for them to permanently reside. This year, I “scaled back” the floral collection; but still, as we speak, several tulip plants have already bloomed past their expiration and are in desperate need of a home for the offseason. What can I say? I’m a sucker for spring. I tend to have the same unhealthy obsession when it comes to indoor decor, as I have amassed quite the array of seasonal knick knacks, wreaths and doormats. As soon as the months transition, there I am, back up on the step stool, peering into the infamous “Christmas Closet” for signs of the many spring, summer and autumn accents I have accumulated over the last five years. Back in March, I realized that, with the exception of Easter decorations, I am seriously lacking in anything not resembling a bunny, chick or egg. Were my apartment able to hold one more thing, I’d say it was time
for a small spring shopping spree; but alas, it cannot. Well… maybe just one more thing. Speaking of decor, my little finned friend, Norton von Spudley - “Spud,” “Norty,” “Baby Betta Extraordinaire” - seems to be flourishing in his bowl on my desk at home, nestled under “his” desk lamp and next to a rather striking likeness of himself in the form of a blown glass ornament. Often, I find him staring intently at the little turquoise fish in the hand-painted ball, as if pleading with it to come out and play. Nearly 18 monthsold, my Norty seems to be enjoying his time as my companion, which he expresses daily by trying to devour my finger as I sprinkle crushed pellets into his bowl. Table manners are not a strong point. And that’s the way it stands in this second week of May, hovering on the brink of summer while shaking off the winter doldrums that have engrossed us for the last several months - the happy medium, if you will, of weather. Enjoy it while it lasts. This, too, shall pass.

’Tis time for a bit of this and that, a collection of random thoughts and musings collected over time and compiled for your reading pleasure - or displeasure, as the case may be. But seriously, I do hope you’ll indulge this meandering assortment of musings. How about this weather? After waiting for what has seemed like months for spring to arrive - oh, wait… - it appears the season of growth has finally taken up residence over the shores of Long Island. Some might even go so far as to say time has fast forwarded right into summer; but we can be sure to experience a few more chilly days before it’s safe to put the jackets away for good. ’Til then, best to keep those flip flops on stand-by. There will be plenty of time for bare feet and bathing suits in the months to come. In the meantime, the trees have begun to explode with blossoms, and everyone is busy sprucing up their gardens - or, in my case, balcony - with the latest annuals. Year after year, I am struck by
