The Charity of The Month for May is: Guardians of Rescue and could really use your help. So many people have had their employment impacted by the virus, therefore donations to this organization are down. This makes it difficult for them to continue feeding the animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues and trying to cover all their expenses. “We have been providing our rescue services for over 10 years, but now we are struggling to keep our organization going,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “We are in jeopardy because of the perfect storm that this pandemic has created for organizations such as ours. Mr. & Mrs. Garvey live in Babylon with their 3 children, Kate (11) and Eloise and Sam (10 year old twins). Since the beginning of the stay-at-home order, their kids decided to set up a table on their driveway every single day, weather permitting, to collect food for St. Joseph’s Food Pantry. A neighbor (Anthony Pascarella - owner of CJS Printing ) whom they did not know before the food drive, dropped off several printed signs for them, unsolicited and free of charge. The signs have been very helpful in alerting the community about the food drive. When they began collecting food in late March, Kate, Eloise and Sam set a goal for themselves to collect 1 ton of non-perishable food items and paper products, and they have already surpassed it! With 3000 pounds of donated food collected, they are exited and confident they can reach their new goal of 2 tons very soon.

Guardians of Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Their mission is to facilitate and foster programs and activities that further the unique benefits of interaction between people and animals. They are truly an animal rights and welfare organization whose members work to protect the wellbeing of all animals and their owners, and come to the aid of those in distress. The Guardians are keenly aware that there is no shortage of animal neglect and their goal is to help in as many ways as possible to make sure animals are always taken care of. We are all aware of the toll that this pandemic is having on people, yet the impacts are being felt beyond humans. Animals are also being impacted in numerous ways through this situation, leaving some animal rescue organizations to struggle to provide their services. Guardians of Rescue is overwhelmed

The National PTA’s annual Reflections program provides an opportunity for students across the country to express themselves through the arts, and Seaford High School junior Matt Shiental may have a say on a future contest. Spirit Remains Strong For Seaford Seniors

To stay united as a class, Seaford High School seniors decorated their front doors, windows and porches to celebrate their accomplishments, ambitions and interests Although they cannot be together in person, Seaford High School seniors remain united as a class through the COVID-19 pandemic. Class of 2020 officers meet digitally at least once a week to share ideas that keep their connections strong. Throughout the community, front doors, windows and porches have been decorated at the seniors’ homes to celebrate their accomplishments, mark the activities that have defined their high school careers and highlight their personal interests and ambitions. It became a family project, with parents and siblings getting involved to create fitting tributes to the seniors. Decorations, many of which were stuck to green backgrounds, included pictures, jerseys, Class of 2020 signs and the logos of the colleges they will attend. “It was a nice way to generate pride in the community,” class Treasurer Kelsey Conti said. “It was great to see everyone participate and it gave some energy to the seniors in a difficult time.” The class officers are creating a weekly newsletter that is electronically shared with all seniors. The first edition of the newsletter included inspirational quotes from the class officers and announced the door decorating contest while the following week included photos of the doors. Seniors Nicole Amato and James Padavan created an Instagram account that spotlights the future plans for the Class of 2020. Each student could submit a picture along with his or her college selection and expected major, which Nicole and James turned into a collage and posted on the @SeafordClassof20 page. “It’s important because it gives recognition to all of the seniors,” class Secretary Ally McMahon said. Class JOHN CARLO CALANDRA Vice President Max Newman noted the kind deed of a Seaford High School staff member, aide Teri Walsh, who has baked cookies for each senior on his or her birthday since school has closed. For the traditional senior class gift, a donation will be made to the CDC Foundation for the COVID-19 emergency response fund. Senior class advisers Kim Flood and Shari Raduazzo noted that some more senior recognition activities are in the works, with a few surprises planned. Mural Club Beautifying Seaford Schools

Art and literature come together as one in the Seaford High School library, which was recently beautified by students from the Mural Club. More than two dozen artists contributed their talents to the 13-foot-long by 3-foot-tall painting, which celebrates books. The club launched last year by creating a mural at the Viking school store and painting a piano. This year’s project was the library. The artists, along with Mural Club adviser Melinda DiGiovanna and library media specialist Joanna McCloskey, brainstormed ideas for a literature-themed mural. A concept emerged that would celebrate different literary periods. The left side of the mural is an ode to the classics such as “The Great Gatsby,” “Hamlet,” “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “The Odyssey,” while the right spotlights contemporary books popular with today’s teenage readers including “Harry Potter,” “Hobbit”

and “Twilight.” Ms. DiGiovanna said that the goal for the mural was to “create something that is breathtaking for everybody.” The piece, which was created on Masonite boards, was placed about bookshelves in the library’s McIntyre room. Mural Club members Kim Garneau, Casey Lee and Grace Mirabito, all seniors, said it was exciting to create an artistic piece for the school that will be there for future generation of Seaford students to admire. Grace noted the passion that every student brought to the project, while Casey said that the finished piece is reflective of their different artistic styles. “Everyone was so dedicated and it was so great working with a talented group of people,” Kim said. “It was very rewarding.” The artwork, from conceptualization to completion, took about five months. The club

will next complete murals for teachers who have requested them, and the list is lengthy. Students will work with teachers to come up with mural designs that reflect their passions and personalities. The Mural Club is not limited to the high school. Club members are also working on a painting for the board room at Seaford Manor Elementary School and are collaborating with student-artists at Seaford Middle School for a mural in the courtyard there. Ms. DiGiovanna and art department Chairman Curtis Tripoli said that the goal is share the talents of Seaford’s artists with all students, staff and the community. “So far, it has been a great success and it’s going to continue,” Mr. Tripoli said. “The idea of spreading creativity around the schools is what we want to do. The buildings need murals and this is a great start.”

Since public libraries across the County are currently closed, a digital library card will enable people to explore the full complement of online library services from the comfort of their homes. Download the Libby app and borrow ebooks and audiobooks. Some libraries provide access to streaming entertainment apps like Kanopy or Hoopla that can be installed on your smart TV. Other resources include Tutor.com, which connects users to live

homework help; interactive language learning from Pronunciator; and currentissue popular magazines from RB Digital. The public libraries of Nassau County stand ready to serve, even when our facilities are closed. People with active library cards can visit their library’s website today to discover the resources that are already available to them.
