I’m sorry, this seat is taken. We’ve all done it. In a crowded movie theatre, a packed-to-capacity train… sometimes, our desire for personal space wins out over common courtesy. I’m not proud of it, but, well, I’m not entirely ashamed of it either. Case in point: Just last week, my cousin and I ventured out to one of several opening night screenings of The Avengers, Marvel’s latest in a long line of comic-inspired blockbusters. Like most others in attendance, we arrived at the theatre a full 45 minutes before show time in order to avoid sitting in the front row, straining to

see the top of the screen. After scoring two relatively centered seats in the last row, I strategically placed my jacket and pocketbook on the neighboring chair. Fortyfive minutes elapsed. The theatre filled in quickly, but there were still plenty of other options aside from the one single seat I had “saved.” About 20 minutes into the previews, there it was – two stragglers wandered in, loudly discussing where to sit, with one pointing out several suitable options as the other continued to climb up to the last row, our row. “Is that seat taken?” the one, more irritating individual bellowed, while literally standing in front of

Senior Counseling Workshops While enjoying their “golden years,” senior citizens may also face stressful challenges often related to isolation, medical problems, and/ or losing a spouse or loved one. Lending a hand to mature residents, Hempstead Town, in conjunction with the Long Island Crisis Center, is hosting free workshops

entitled, “Putting Together the Pieces for a Happy Life.” The workshops will focus on these unique challenges and provide seniors with important information on how they can receive help. During the 30-minute workshops, presenters from the Long Island Crisis Center will discuss challenges that senior citizens face, how they

can recognize when they need help and how to obtain the help they need. Upon the workshop’s conclusion, attendees will have an opportunity to ask individual questions to the presenter and learn how they can receive help for their specific concerns. “We are thrilled that the Town of Hempstead is taking a lead on bringing

crisis intervention and suicide prevention to the community’s senior citizens,” said Linda Leonard, Executive Director of Long Island Crisis Center. “National suicide rates for the 65+ population have historically always been the highest among all age groups. I am encouraged that we can make a

positive impact locally by getting direct access to this vulnerable population through the Town’s partnership with us.” The Long Island Crisis Center, located at 2740 Martin Avenue in Bellmore, is Nassau County’s only 24/7 crisis intervention and referral center. The birds could almost be heard chirping “Home Sweet Home” in Lido Beach today, as Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray, Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney and the New York Audubon Society saluted 14 local elementary school students for their efforts to protect the oceanfront bird sanctuaries that inhabit the township’s beaches that were damaged by Superstorm Sandy only two and half years ago.

By protecting their endangered friends, these students from Drexel Avenue Elementary School in Westbury are helping Hempstead Town continue ongoing work to rebuild the Sandy-battered shoreline by protecting their endangered feathered friends. The students are winners of the New York Audubon Society’s “Be a Good Egg” poster contest, where the youngsters crafted creative signs to

bring awareness to visitors to share the beach with migratory and beachnesting bird species. “Preserving the nesting areas for our beachdwelling birds is crucial for their species to survive and thrive,” Murray said. “Thank you to these wonderful students and the people at Audubon New York for helping us protect our feathered

Go Green Team The phrase: “reduce, re-use and recycle” was put into action on Earth Day, April 22nd, when the Seaford High School Green Team, an environmental club, taught young Girl Scouts at Harbor Elementary School about the importance of helping the environment and the need to preserve valuable resources. Green Team members Samridhi Grover, Laura GO GREEN TEAM - The Seaford High School Green Team conducts a hands-on Osa, Tracy DeLeon, Earth Day lesson for Girl Scouts at Harbor Elementary School.

Sabrina Williams, Austin Idaspe, Anthony Cuchel, and Melissa Cholewa educated the girls about the significance of Earth Day and taught them how to make rain sticks out of recyclable materials while sharing their history. “Rain sticks are long, hollow tubes that generate the sound of rain as rice trickle down spiraled tin foil,” the team explained to the girls. “Years ago, they were used by Native

American tribes under the belief that they could bring rain. Many tribes would experience times of drought and would be in desperate need to protect and water their crops.” Green Team advisor Lauren Thompsen added, “Like the Native Americans, people today also have something we need to protect that we often take for granted… our planet and its water
