services available to them.” When it began in 1971, the Long Island Crisis Center was a single-phoneline suicide prevention hotline. In the past 42 years, it has grown into a major crisis intervention center, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. It is staffed around-the-clock by trained counselors, who help more than 11,000 cases annually. The center now features six telephone hotlines, live online chat, texting and walk-in counseling. The center offers translation services for Long Island’s increasingly diverse immigrant population, and serves as backup to the national suicide hotline 1-800-Suicide, Children of Hope, the Long Island Railroad (in response to the occurrence of suicides

on railroad platforms) and numerous Long Island agencies. In response to the growing crises among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth, the center created the Pride for Youth program. PFY services include individual, family and group counseling, sexual health services (including HIV testing), disease and unintended pregnancy prevention, and youth leadership opportunities. The cornerstone of PFY is The Coffeehouse, a weekly drop-in center for LGBT youth ages 13 to 21. LICC also offers extensive outreach to Long Island schools through its Building Healthy Lives Through Education program. Workshops are delivered to individual classrooms, not large assemblies, in order to maximize student

Celebrating Earth Day

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone was joined by Legislator Kara Hahn, Tom Ronayne, Suffolk County Director of Veterans Services and Suffolk County veterans to plant two Cherry Blossom trees in honor of Earth Day and our veterans. “As we celebrate Earth Day across the globe, we must individually and collectively do all we can to save our planet and protect our environment,” said County Executive Steve Bellone. “Today, I have the honor of planting two trees in Suffolk County’s Armed Forces Plaza in tribute and salute to our veterans who give of their lives to protect our freedoms. I would like to give a special thank you to Seatuck Nurseries in

Eastport for donating the trees and partnering with Suffolk County.” Tree planting is a great way to celebrate Earth Day as it beautifies an area but more importantly trees help produce oxygen and filter out pollutants to clean the air and also help preserve water levels in the soil. “Tress are both symbolic of the cycles in each person’s life and serve as a reminder of the renewal of nature,” said Legislator Kara Hahn, sponsor of a 2012 bill creating a memorial arbor program for Suffolk County Parks. “Therefore the planting of a tree is one of the most fitting and lasting tributes to the memory of a loved one.”

Counseling Workshops Offered While enjoying their “golden years,” senior citizens also face stressful challenges often related to medical issues, grieving the loss of a loved one and/or isolation. Lending a hand to mature residents, Hempstead Town, in conjunction with the Bellmorebased Long Island Crisis Center, is hosting free workshops focused on these unique challenges, along with important information on where seniors can turn for help.

The workshop is entitled “Putting Together the Pieces For a Happy Life.” “We want our seniors to know that there are services available to assist them in their times of need,” Murray said. “There is hope and also help.” During the 30-minute programs, presenters from the Long Island Crisis Center will talk about the challenges that senior citizens face, how they can recognize when they need help and how

to get the help they need. Attendees will also have the opportunity to ask individual questions and inquire about assistance. The Long Island Crisis Center, located on 2740 Martin Avenue in Bellmore, is Nassau County’s only 24/7 crisis intervention and referral center. For more than four decades, the organization has offered free, anonymous, confidential and nonjudgmental services to Long Islanders.

Veterans Appreciation Breakfast On Wednesday, May 7th, The Larkfield will be hosting the Second Annual Suffolk County Veterans Appreciation Breakfast from 8:30 until 11 a.m. The event is sponsored by Suffolk County Legislator William R. Spencer and Suffolk County Veterans Service Director Tom Ronayne and will honor veterans Steve Bellone, Suffolk County Executive, and DuWayne Gregory, Presiding Officer. The breakfast was established as a way to thank the men and women of our military for their service to the country. Last year, more than 200 active members and veterans of all branches of the armed

forces attended, along with family and friends. “We’re grateful that Legislator Spencer and Veterans Service Director Tom Ronayne have chosen The Larkfield as the site of such a prestigious event,” said Larkfield Vice President Harry Mountanos. “We look forward to serving those that have served us and our country so selflessly and courageously.” “The men and women of the U.S. military do so much for our country,” said Dr. Spencer. “At the very least we, as a community, can come together to thank them for their service and honor them for their bravery. Rappaport, whose collection of 48 works about famous figures in history include, “Helen’s Big World,” a story about Helen Keller, “Dirt In Their Skirts,” about young women that won the women’s baseball championship in the 1940s, and “Lady Liberty,” a biography told by those who worked on her.
