“Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive taking place on Long Island, and nationally, on Saturday May 9th. Here’s how it works. Long Islanders are being asked to set out non-perishable food by their mailboxes on May 9th, which will then be picked up by their letter carriers while delivering the day’s mail. The letter carriers will then deliver

their collected food to an Island Harvest “Stamp Out Hunger” warehouse – where an army of volunteers will sort food, to be distributed immediately to Island Harvest’s network of 570 member agencies, including food pantries and soup kitchens throughout Long Island. “While the letter carriers do all of the day’s heavy lifting, Stamp Out Hunger

makes donating easy. All people have to do is leave their donation by their mailbox,” asserts Randi Shubin Dresner, President & CEO, Island Harvest. “Our goal is for every family to donate something, and let their letter carriers do the rest. Embrace The Change By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s amazing the degree to which our media consumption has changed as a society through the years. In the last decade alone, from the time I graduated from C.W. Post’s Journalism program, social media has quite literally taken over – for better or worse. What was once perfectly satisfactory to read in the next morning’s paper now must be transmitted instantly across a host of media, in some cases, at the expense of accuracy. While this isn’t exactly a unique realization, it was brought to new light at the recent Society of Professional Journalists Region I Conference that I attended last week at Hofstra University. Again and again,

the same theme was revisited – how can we, as journalists, learn to be so-called “experts” on everything, able to take on any task asked of us on the fly, all in an effort to transmit to the masses before the millions of others out there doing the same thing? It’s a tall order, one that, just 10 years ago, wasn’t quite so relevant. Couple that with the fact that literally anyone with a smartphone can capture an image or video, add some copy and a sound bite and, theoretically, paint him/ herself as a journalist. All it takes is the vast landscape of the Internet to take a tidbit to the masses via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, whatever; and, before you know it, you have a viral sensation that, just minutes prior, was

nothing more than gossip. Amazing, isn’t it? Take that to the next level, and it is nearly impossible to steer clear of spoiler alerts for your favorite TV shows, movies, books, anything… if you’re not planning on watching it live, you had best engage in a self-imposed media blackout until your DVR is warmed up. This, from the person who decided to wait an hour or so before catching up on last night’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy. Enough said. Ten years ago, that wouldn’t have been a problem. Like it or not, this is the world we now live in. The sooner we embrace it, learn to live with it and adapt our lives to the changing media landscape, the better.

HOMELESS AWARENESS - On April 18th & 19th, youth from Venturing Crew 130, along with other Venturers from Nassau County, participated in a homeless awareness and service program. The youth spent the evening sleeping in a cardboard box with little comfort items. Each also helped to collect and sort donated clothing and toiletries while others prepared a hot breakfast to serve to those less fortunate in NYC. Other Crews that participated were 46 (Farmingdale), 556 (Port Washington) and 577 (North Bellmore).

As the deadline for paying the second half 2014-2015 School Tax approaches, Hempstead Town Receiver of Taxes Don Clavin advises taxpayers of the payment options provided by his office. Individuals who prefer to make payments in person can avail themselves of the town’s two satellite offices, the mobile tax office and the ‘EZ-Pay Drive Thru’ payment window located behind the Hempstead Tax Office. In addition, tax bills can be paid by credit card or e-check, online or via telephone. Payments received or postmarked by Monday, May, 11th will

be penalty-free, as the payment due date of May 10th falls on a Sunday. “In addition to extending hours at the Hempstead Tax Office during peak collection times, our ‘EZPay Drive Thru’ payment window, located behind the Hempstead Tax Office, allows our customers to make payments from the comfort of their cars,” said Clavin. The drive through window will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 11th and will accept check and money order payments. Hours of operation at the Hempstead Tax Office during peak collection

times (May 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 11th) will be 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The fully-staffed Hempstead office accepts all forms of payment and can assist constituents with account inquiries. “My office recently negotiated to lower the convenience fees charged by Official Payments Corporation for the processing of e-check and credit card payment transactions,” said Clavin. Electronic check payments incur a flat fee of $1.50, while credit card payments incur a total of 2.35% of the total tax payment (minimum fee $1).
