SCHOOL LIBRARIAN EARNS ‘SUSTAINABLE’ CERTIFICATION - Seaford High School librarian Joanna McCloskey is the first school librarian in the state to be certified as sustainable for her efforts in creating an adaptable library program. She said that earning the sustainability certification, for which she will be recognized at New York Library Association’s annual conference in November, was the next step in her continuous goal of creating an information center that best serves the school community. “It is my hope that more libraries embrace this, because it is just so invigorating,” she said. “It represents the future for libraries which, in my opinion, have to grow and change. Earning the sustainability certification was so professionally enriching.” Tom Lynch, the district’s executive director of instructional technology and STEM, oversees the library program and said it is a great honor for Seaford High School to have the first sustainable school library. “Ms. McCloskey strives to
make the high school library a continued resource for faculty and students amidst the restraints imposed by the pandemic,” he said. “She continually looks to update the library catalog as well as broaden the availability of digital resources. Teachers and students view Ms. McCloskey as a ready resource for instruction and research.”

art shows, guest speakers and research symposiums. One of the functions of sustainability is to continuously update the collection. Ms. McCloskey explained that it is important for school libraries to have books that contain current information and appeal to today’s generation of readers, while also leaving a place on the shelves for the classics that appeal from one generation to the next. A library must have a strong digital presence, with resources that students can access from their computers, wherever they are. The library has a wealth of online databases with information in all subject areas. Ms. McCloskey’s digital newsletters contain links to book trailers to help students find exciting reading material. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated plans to create a fully digital library. Ms. McCloskey now offers online office hours in which students can log on through Microsoft Teams with their research questions. All of her research tutorials are available on the library’s website and magazine subscriptions are now digital through Flipster and Scholastic. Additional titles in eBook format were purchased this year. She also created an app for students to download to their phones to quickly access library resources. Ms. McCloskey joined the district in 2000 as the librarian at Seaford Harbor Elementary School and moved to the high school in 2002, where she was the school’s teacher of the year

“Libraries have to change to stay current with the times,” says Seaford High School librarian Joanna McCloskey, who has never shied away from adapting her program to better support students and teachers in an ever-changing world. Ms. McCloskey was recognized for her work by becoming the first school librarian in the state to complete the Sustainable Library Certification Program through the New York Library Association. According to the association, librarians receiving the sustainable certification have demonstrated leadership in program and service design with a critical eye towards environmental stewardship, economic feasibility and social equity. In Seaford, Ms. McCloskey is the district’s library liaison. In that role, she connects with other school librarians throughout Nassau County and also maintains a strong relationship with the Seaford Public Library. She had extensive input into the renovation of all four libraries in the district from 2016 to 2018. There were several upgrades to the high school library including new carpet, a fresh coat of paint, the installation of curved bookshelves, a new circulation desk and new reading area. Old furniture was replaced with lightweight tables and chairs, all on wheels, which can be moved around to create different seating arrangements. The moveable furniture is one of the most important aspects, Ms. McCloskey noted, as the library hosts events such as

Contractors For Kids (CFK) is a non-profit organization, which was founded for the purpose of providing assistance to families in Long Island communities. Their goal is to assist children and their families overcome obstacles that have unfortunately changed or have impacted their lives through the sickness, injury or death of a child. They are committed to this cause and want to give hope and reassurance for the futures of Long Islanders. CFK was founded in 2005 by Kevin Harney and Alan Nahmias of Stalco Construction. Kevin and Alan, both long-time philanthropists, saw the growing need for financial assistance in our communities and knew that something more needed to be done. Through random acts of kindness, they were slowly changing the lives of others, however they thirsted to make more change so they decided to form this non-profit, Contractors For Kids. Their organization runs on donations only and is volunteer based, they have no employees. One family at a time, they make sure that the financial hardship brought on by sickness, injury or death does not destroy an already hurting family. Whether it is to pay a phone bill or a mortgage payment, they want to be there to help. Since 2005, CFK has given out more than 3 MILLION DOLLARS to help local Long Islanders. Here are some of the areas they’ve helped others financially: Rent, Mortgage Payments, Oil Deliveries, Utility Bills, Food, Transportation To & From Hospitals, Co-Payments, Medications & Funeral Expenses. So how do you qualify to get help? It’s quite simple. If you can prove that you are struggling financially because of the sickness, injury or death of a child, you live on Long Island (in Nassau or Suffolk County), and you have
filled out their Application For Assistance, they will get in touch with you to see how they can be of help! Want to help make a difference? You can do so by learning their mission, spreading awareness, referring families to CFK, distributing handouts/ electronic materials and representing CFK at health fairs, open enrollment or employee meetings. Additionally, on June 14th CFK will be holding their 15th Annual Golf Outing at Woodside Club in Muttontown. This will be a COVID-19 compliant event...all local guidelines will be adhered to! There will be boxed breakfast, beverage carts, a silent auction, raffles, prizes, barbeque and of course, golfing. If you would like to attend as an individual player, in a group of 4 players or you would like to sign-up as a sponsor, you can. However, space is limited. Full Day Camps Available at North & South Shore Parks - July 6th-August 13th. Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele Johnson announces that registration for the Town’s Summer Recreation Program, open to children ages 4-12, is now underway. This year’s program once again includes a full-day option at two locations: Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa and Syosset-Woodbury Community Park, where campers can stay on site through the lunch hour. Seaford’s music program begins with general music instruction in kindergarten, which continues throughout elementary school. In fourth grade, students can join band and chorus. There are numerous instrumental and vocal groups at the secondary level. During the pandemic, the district has maintained its commitment to music education as small-group instruction continues following social distancing
guidelines. Research into music education continues to demonstrate educational, cognitive and social skill benefits for children who make music. After two years of music education, researchers found that participants showed more substantial improvements in how the brain processes speech and reading scores than their less-involved peers and that students who are involved in music are not only more likely to graduate high school, but also to attend college as well. Everyday listening skills are stronger in musically trained children. Significantly, listening skills are closely tied to the ability to perceive speech in a noisy background, pay attention, and keep sounds in memory. Later in life, individuals who took music lessons as children show stronger neural processing of sound.

For the second consecutive year, the Seaford School District has been honored for its outstanding commitment to music education with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from the National Association for Music Merchants Foundation. Now in its 22nd year, the Best Communities for Music Education distinction is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students. To qualify, the Seaford music department answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs. Responses were verified with school officials and
Seaford Manor Elementary School recently welcomed its incoming kindergarten class during a socially distanced meet and greet on the blacktop. The future students sat with their parents on the bright and sunny day to learn about the school they will attend for six years, beginning in September. Children and parents were warmly greeted by
Principal Debra Emmerich, as well as a special visitor, Pete the Cat. Each student also received a gift bag to take home with a “Pete the Cat” book, color activity and crayons, and a literary experience folder. Third graders lined the perimeter of the blacktop, many holding handmade signs and green pom poms, to enthusiastically welcome their soon-to-be
peers to the Manor school community and also lead the special guests in singa-longs. After children and their parents returned home, they were able to log onto Zoom for an interactive “Pete the Cat” read aloud, craft and PowerPoint presentation about early reading skills.

Hempstead Town To Become First On Long Island To Pilot Electric Garbage Truck Imagine a time when a garbage truck quietly makes its way through the neighborhood during early morning rounds, emitting zero emissions and actually reducing air pollution. Thanks to impressive technological advances by manufacturers of heavy vehicle equipment, that time has arrived. Supervisor Don Clavin recently announced “Vision 2040,” a commitment to convert the Town of Hempstead’s entire fleet to clean energy vehicles by the year 2040. Along with colleagues on the Hempstead Town Board, Clavin previewed a stateof-the-art Mack LR Electric garbage truck, currently deployed by New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY), at Rath Park in
Franklin Square. The electric truck display and preview, open to members of the media, was coordinated in collaboration with DSNY, Mack Trucks and Gabrielli Truck Sales. Clavin also announced a plan to make the Town of Hempstead the first municipality on Long Island to test out the Mack LR Electric Truck by the end of this year. Joining with Clavin in support of the clean energy vision are Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, Councilman Bruce Blakeman, Councilman Anthony D’Esposito, Councilman Dennis Dunne, Sr., Councilman Tom Muscarella, Councilman Chris Carini, Town Clerk Kate Murray and Receiver Jeanine Driscoll. DSNY’s LR Electric from
Mack Trucks, is only one of two currently in the world, and the Town of Hempstead would be pilot a new vehicle that should be completed and ready to test by the end of this year. The Town is already in the process of introducing new electric vehicles to its current fleet, and exploring the implementation of new charging stations at town facilities. Gabrielli Truck Sales is partnering with Town of Hempstead to lead the charge in its transition to Battery Electric Vehicles. Gabrielli Truck Sales is making investments into its facilities throughout the tristate and training to ensure the transition from diesel powered trucks to battery electric trucks is seamless. Raynham Hall Hosting Online Book Launch Event Detailing George Washington’s Long Island Spy Ring Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced that historic Raynham Hall Museum in Oyster Bay will host a virtual book launch and lecture by author Bill Bleyer on Monday, May 3, at 7:00pm, detailing his new book George Washington’s Long Island Spy Ring: A History and Tour Guide, ahead of its May 10th publication. Supervisor Saladino said, “Oyster Bay’s history is chock full of historical importance that many may not be aware of, and that is why I am so delighted to see that Raynham Hall Museum has found a way to continue hosting events such as this, utilizing creative solutions to handle gathering restrictions in place to stop the spread of the pandemic. Raynham Hall serves an important mission to perverse our history and educate our children on
the past, and this online book launch and lecture will continue to further that goal in the safest manner possible!” Raynham Hall Museum was the home of Robert Townsend, a central member of George Washington’s Culper Spy Ring. The home was occupied by British officer Col. John Graves Simcoe during the Revolutionary War. Transformed into a Victorian villa in the 1850s, the house offers two eras of interpretation, with the front of the house showcasing the period of the Revolution, and the back of the house preserving a late 19th century aesthetic. While still closed due to the pandemic, the garden is open to the public, and virtual school tours are available by appointment. Bill Bleyer’s new book,
George Washington’s Long Island Spy Ring: A History and Tour Guide, will tell the true story of the Culper Spy Ring.
