I am thankful for my mom and dad. They are the water and sunlight to my plant. They’re the only true role models in my life. They pay the bills, put food in my stomach, and put clothes on my back. They are the most important things in my life. I am thankful for my mom. She is the star in my galaxy. She turned me into the nice gentlemen I am today. She fought through mental illness

two times. She taught how to act respectfully around people she puts in charge of me. She is the main reason I love to be alive. Also, if it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t be in Pal football. I wouldn’t be able deal with my grandfather’s recent trip to the E.R. I wouldn’t be able to keep going in life. Those are many reasons I am thankful for my mom. I am thankful for my dad. He’s the anchor in our ship. My dad makes

sure that the family is stable. He taught me how to defend myself, to ride a bike, and to be safe on the Internet. He makes me happy when I’m depressed. Also, he tells me what my dead grandfather expected of me. He taught me to be respectful to him and to the elderly. He gives donations to foundations for breast cancer and autism. Those are reason why I’m thankful for my dad.

And people, people who leave an indelible imprint on our lives, one that simply does not fade with the passage of time. How lucky we are to have those memories, those associations. How deeply we should treasure them… Time is the one thing we never seem to have quite enough of. It’s a precious commodity, one often taken for granted right up until the moment that it runs out. One day runs into the next – and we

often neglect those things and people we should have paid more attention to along the way. Be thoughtful. Be kind. Be compassionate. Each and every day, to whomever you meet, but mostly to those family and friends who are most important to you. Those are the gestures that will stand the test of time – the gatherings full of laughter and love, the conversations, the greeting cards and gifts, the time spent together. Life is destined to have its fair share of sadness; all we can do is try to minimize the regrets along the way.

Imagine how you would like to be treated, and do your best to emulate that in your interactions with others. It’s the simplest of concepts, really, but its effects are far-reaching. The most important thing is to appreciate those moments – the ones that stay with you – right then, while they are happening. You just never know when it might be the last opportunity. Seaford High School senior Dana Duggan was awarded the highly selective $180,000 Naval Restricted Officer Training Course (NROTC) scholarship as an Officer Candidate for the U.S. Marines. The scholarship will fund her college education at The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, where she plans on studying business management. Upon graduation, she will receive her commission to serve our country for eight years - four years of active duty and four years in the reserves - with the goal of pursuing a military career as a Logistics Officer. According to her recruiting officer, U.S. Marine Sgt. Eli Rhodes, the scholarship is only offered to three or four high school or college-level students in the New York area. Dana was awarded the scholarship based on a battery of Armed Forces Vocation Aptitude tests,

physical fitness tests and her academic record. Dana challenges herself with Advanced Placement and college-level courses and has taken AP History, Spanish and Biology and classes in Economics, Psychology and Government for college credit. According to Sgt. Rhodes, Dana “maxed out” on all physical sections of the test, which included such skills as pull-ups, hang-time, crunches and running. Dana is a three-season athlete who is proud of “breaking down barriers” by becoming a kicker for two years on the Varsity Football team, which won the Big 4 Championship two years in a row. She also ran Varsity Winter track and won fourth in the Nassau County Conference for the 1500 meter event. In addition to her military scholarship, Dana has been awarded a $12,000 scholarship from The Citadel to run Winter and

Spring Track. Dana also played Varsity Lacrosse for four years as a goalie and won the Unsung Hero Award by Nassau County and the outstanding Performance in Lacrosse Booster Club Award by Seaford High School. She also was honored with a Scholar-Athlete Award her sophomore year. Dana also expanded her learning outside of high school by participating in the National Youth Leadership ForumEnvision Medicine Program at the University of Maryland and the Future Leader Boot Camp at Norwich University in Vermont last summer. “It feels really good to earn this military scholarship,” Dana said. “I worked so hard for it and I thank everyone who helped me and supported me. Thirty-six Seaford High School students in Advanced Placement (AP) Biology and AP Environmental Science applied what they learned in the classroom to realworld experiences when they went on a first-time, six-day tour of Costa Rica offered through their school. Chaperoned by teachers Keri Degnan, Janine Cupo, Sonia Zervakos and Frank Maniscalco, students participated in a host of activities ranging from community service projects, touring the natural landmarks of the country, making their own lunch at a working farm, and participating in some adventure tours, such as zip lining in the cloud forest and white water rafting. “This trip exposed the students to a unique environment where they were able to experience and appreciate the biodiversity of life,” said AP Biology teacher Janine Cupo. “As science educators we teach our

students about evolution and the unique adaptations that have evolved in different environments due to different selective pressures. In Costa Rica, the students had the opportunity to see adaptations in both plants and animals different from that of the northeastern United States.” Degnan, the district’s AP Environmental Science teacher, had her students simulate water quality analysis studies in the classroom and found it “an amazing experience” to actually conduct it in the real world setting. “The students also conducted a biodiversity index based upon the organisms that were collected,” she said. “We learn about various biomes and ecosystems in both AP Bio and AP Environmental, and they were able to experience it for themselves through this trip.” While touring the country, the group also saw the windward and leeward sides of the mountains,

the tropical rainforest and the cloud forest, and was also able to go to an active volcano found on the Ring of Fire to experience firsthand the geothermal energy in the hot springs. One of the topics studied in Environmental Science is various types of renewable energy options, according to Degnan. “Costa Rica gets over 90% of its energy needs from renewable energy,” she said. “Windmills, hydroelectric from dams and geothermal were all experienced by my students. It is better than reading it in a textbook.” The school hopes to offer students this trip again in two years, alternating it with a European trip, which are all booked through World Strides https://worldstrides.com. The cost of the trip was about $2,600 per student. “This experience will stay with them for the rest of their lives, hopefully enhancing their appreciation for the uniqueness and value of life,” Cupo added.

The reception started with former New York Jets great Marty Lyons giving the keynote address, sharing his personal experiences with lovedones who battled cancer and thoughts on why fundraising efforts and events like “Bodacious Bras” are important in finding a cure. The auction gavel hit and the live bidding began with a bang as NFL alum Erik Coleman’s bra was auctioned off for $1,500. Between the auctions and ticket sales, the event raised nearly $35,000. The proceeds will support patient programs at Stony Brook University Cancer Center. “We are so excited that this year’s event was so successful,” said Linda Bily, Director, Cancer Patient Advocacy & Community Outreach, Stony Brook University Cancer Center, “the funds support with all of the little things that actually help make the journey through cancer a little bit easier - like support groups, educational materials, transportation, wigs, and peer mentors.” More than 270 guests attended the event on Thursday evening. Top bid, of $2,300, went for “Hometown Hero,” which was created by Eileen Constantouris with the support of NY Mets Pitcher, Steven Matz. Additional awards went to the “NY Rangers Legend” for “Best in Show”; “Dream Catcher” for ‘Most Inspirational’; and “In Honor of our Spuds” for the famous “Booby Prize.”

of the Nassau-Suffolk Performing Arts Youth Band and also founded the Interplay Jazz Orchestra where he plays trumpet in the group. He also coauthored several music books and wrote songs for TV shows. The piece is being published by Pinnacle Music Press and will be available for purchase in about six months. Henderson said his experience with the students was “wonderful. The kids really stepped up; Ms. Loake does such a great job with her kids.”

Varsity Boys Lacrosse players Peter and Nicholas Couvaris will both play for Hartwick College, Daniel Connell will head to SUNY Maritime and Daniel Boloukus will play for Molloy College. Varsity Track runner Nicholas Kocienda has joined the team at Manhattan College

and Girls Varsity Track runner Dana Duggan has joined the team at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina. Varsity Volleyball player Jessica Fischetti is lending her talent to Dowling College. There’s a new piece of music that will surely bring cheers at the Harbor Elementary School spring concert this year. It’s called “The Path of the Viking” and it was specially commissioned for the Harbor School by Gary Henderson, a local teacher, musician and composer.
