Of Weddings & Wandering Just last weekend, I was able to satisfy my urge for a little springtime strolling in the city when the opportunity arose to accompany a friend from college to several New York Bridal Fashion Week runway shows. While I was initially far more interested in the aimless wandering aspect of the day, I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by the experience of attending these avant-garde displays. Never having heard of the featured designers prior to seeing their latest collections in person, they proved to be quite impressive. Sure, I could have done without the crowns of flowers as accent, and I’m fairly certain I will not be accessorizing any future bridal gowns with high-top sneakers; but, quirks aside, some of the styles were quite stunning when viewed more as works of art rather than practical fashion. At the close of one of the shows, the audience was caught

off guard by an impromptu wedding proposal, orchestrated by the boyfriend of one of the featured models. As she stood aghast, he expressed his love and desire to spend the rest of his life with the woman before him, saying he could think of no more appropriate venue to pop the question than on a runway in the midst of bridal week. Judging by the standing ovation delivered by the crowd - among them, the family of the blushing bride-to-be - it seemed he couldn’t have picked a more opportune moment, one they will surely treasure forever. Bridal business aside, we managed to squeeze in some sightseeing on what happened to be one of the warmest days we have been graced with so far this season. From the Flatiron District over to the West Village, we traversed a solid six miles or so of the downtown area, taking in the nuances of each neighborhood and - of

course - finding time to snap some photos along the way. It was during an ill-fated “selfie” attempt in front of the Flatiron Building that a kind woman took pity on us and offered to take the photo, saying, “I know it’s probably taboo to walk up to random strangers and volunteer to take their picture, but you two seemed like you could use a little help.” Why yes, we could indeed. Score one for acts of kindness from fellow tourists. In all, it was a day short on the sort of haphazard adventure which has become the norm with most New York City day trips I have ventured on; actually, quite seamless. It’s funny, the tendency to almost miss the chaos when things go according to plan. I’ll have to remind myself of that irony the next time I’m traipsing 50 blocks out of the way to make a reservation at the third restaurant on the list, while carrying my shoes.

Whether it’s advice from their parents, a response to television ads urging viewers to save for retirement or their own ﬁnancial savvy, many of today’s young professionals recognize the importance of saving for retirement from the moment they receive their ﬁrst paychecks. But men and women over 50 may not have been so practical, and many such professionals may feel a need to save more as their retirements draw ever closer.

Pew also says that, although seniors consistently have lower rates of technology adoption than the general public, four in 10 seniors now own smartphones, which is more than double the amount that did in 2013. Young Scientists

Five students from Seaford High School’s science research program recently participated in the Long Island Science and Engineering Fair at the Crest Hollow Country Club. Juniors Chris Schneider, Eric Schneider and Raj Mahadan presented their project, “The Effect of Commercial and Recreational Boating on the Invertebrate Biodiversity of Aquatic Environments of the Greater New York Area.” They collected and analyzed water adjacent to four parks on Long Island and Brooklyn to study the effects of boating on the ecosystem. Seniors Melanie Cascio and Darah Daskalakis presented “The Effect of Invasive Bird Feces on the Invertebrate Biodiversity of Seaman’s Neck Park.” They analyzed soil composition and determined that there was an increase in essential

nutrients in the soil in areas more populated by birds. Students completed their work under the direction of mentor science teachers Janine Cupo and Mary Simons, with support from Cold Spring Harbor National Laboratory. This was the first year that Seaford’s science research students have participated in competitive fairs since the program began three years ago. “We are very proud of our students who are participating in highlevel science research competitions, making

presentations of their independent research under the guidance of their teachers and mentors,” said Principal Scott Bersin. “We are pleased that our school’s continually expanding curricular offerings has enabled them to display their talents.” Sixteen Seaford students from the two groups in addition to five other science research groups will next present at the New York State Science and Engineering Fair Andromeda Division on April 23rd at Plainview-Old Bethpage Middle School.

It was an evening of applause and admiration as more than 30 Wantagh Middle School students and faculty read original works and favorite literary pieces

Reading Nicole Waldbauer described the evening as an opportunity to celebrate literacy and the spoken and written word. Some of the works read were excerpts from Shel Silverstein’s “Don’t Tell Me,” John Donne’s “Death Be Not Proud” and lyrics from Cyndi Lauper’s song “Time After Time.” Some of the original works presented especially for the occasion included “If I” by Alyssa Ficco, “The Room is Spinning” by William Razeq and “The Meaning” by Heather Sheridan. ELA teacher Christine Hult, who read Taylor Mali’s entertaining “Like Lilly Like Wilson,” added that the goal of the event was to spread the love of words. “We study authors and the meaning of words, so Word on the Street helps the students to appreciate the meaning behind what they have read,” she said.

Seaford High School senior Taylor Stone received a Silver Medal award in the 2018 Scholastic Art and Writing national contest. Taylor received Silver Key awards at the regional level to advance to the national competition, where her

work was again recognized. Taylor’s award-winning artwork was an editorial cartoon that she created in the comic and cartoon illustration class last year with teacher Michael Kerr. Students studied editorial cartoons and the art of famous political cartoonist
