Some Benefits of Growing Older

Seniors are a rapidly growing segment of the population. In the United States, the Administration on Aging states that the older population — persons 65 years or older — numbered 46.2 million in 2014 (the latest year for which data is available). Statistics Canada reports that, in July 2015, estimates indicated that there were more persons aged 65 years and older in Canada than children aged 0 to 14 years for the ﬁrst time in the country’s history. Nearly one in six Canadians (16.1%) was at least 65 years old. With so many people living longer, it’s time to

celebrate the perks of getting older rather than the drawbacks. Here are some great beneﬁts to growing old. • Higher self-esteem: The insecurities of youth give way as one ages, and older people have less negativity and higher self-esteem. A University of Basel study of people ranging in ages from 18 to 89 found that regardless of demographic and social status, the older one gets the higher self-esteem climbs. Qualities like selfcontrol and altruism can contribute to happiness. • Financial perks: Seniors are entitled to discounts on meals, museum entry fees, movies, and other entertainment if they’re willing to disclose their age. Discounts are available through an array of venues if one speaks up. Seniors also can enjoy travel perks, with slashed prices on resorts, plane

tickets and more. The U.S. National Park Service offers citizens age 62 and older lifetime passes to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites for just $10 in person ($20 online or via mail). • Reasoning and problem-solving skills: Brain scans reveal that older adults are more likely to use both hemispheres of their brains simultaneously — something called bilateralization. This can sharpen reasoning skills. For example, in a University of Illinois study, older air trafﬁc controllers excelled at their cognitively taxing jobs, despite some losses in shortterm memory and visual spatial processing. Older controllers proved to

be experts at navigating, juggling multiple aircrafts simultaneously and avoiding collisions. • Less stress: As people grow older, they are able to differentiate their needs from wants and focus on

more important goals. This can alleviate worry over things that are beyond one’s control. Seniors may realize how little the opinions of others truly mean in the larger picture, thereby feeling less stress about what others think of

them. Growing older may involve gray hair or wrinkling skin, but there are many positive things associated with aging.

Effects of Snoring Including Alzheimer’s

The aging process can lead to a relaxation of the throat muscles, resulting in snoring. Furthermore, the NSF says anatomical abnormalities of the nose and throat, illness and other factors may also contribute to snoring. Drinking alcohol, which can have an effect similar to muscle relaxants, in the evening can make snoring worse. While many people may think snoring is a mere nuisance, it actually may be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea. Over time, apnea can be

associated with high blood pressure and increased risks of heart attack, stroke or death, advises WebMD. Now there is new evidence that those with obstructive sleep apnea may be at a higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease as well. A new study published in the Journal of Neurology found that people with sleep apnea tended to develop memory problems and other signs of cognitive impairment earlier than people without such sleep disorders. Richard Osorio, MD, a research assistant professor of psychiatry at the NYU Center for Brain Health, found that, among 2,000 people studied, those who reported having sleep apnea or snoring tended to develop signs of mild cognitive impairment, including memory lapses and slower speed on cognitive skills, about 12

years earlier on average than those who didn’t report any sleep-related breathing issues. Mild cognitive impairment often precedes dementia related

to Alzheimer’s disease. Some researchers believe snoring and sleep apnea may contribute to a buildup of the toxic protein in the brain called

beta-amyloid, which is a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. If snoring has become problematic, men are

urged to visit a doctor or sleep specialist to see which therapies can be instituted to help improve sleep and overall health.

Snoring may seem like a pesky yet minor problem, but it can be much more serious than some people know. Although snoring is a common problem among all ages and genders, the National Sleep Foundation says that men are twice as likely to snore as women, and snoring can worsen with age.

This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, Ocean-Bay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more. They have successfully rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters! Also, aside from collecting trash they also have had an amazing impact on the amount of sewage being dumped in our bays. To reduce the flow of trash into our bays, they have collaborated on the funding and installation of more than 4,000 street storm drain inserts in Nassau County. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. works diligently to partner with industry businesses, non-profits, government agencies and academic institution’s striving to promote comprehensive understanding of local water quality issues, through hands-on training, identification and problem solving. Last week I featured some boat cleaning tips that I received from Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. and this week I would like

and Suzanne Mooney set up the extensive course which they say makes class feel more like an episode of “American Ninja Warrior.” Among the obstacles are a cargo net, spring board and swinging ropes. Students in kindergarten through fifth-grade are learning different gymnastics skills such as cartwheels and

handstands. The teachers said that the obstacle course encourages children to expand their comfort zone by trying new activities in a safe environment. It also builds camaraderie as the student support each other as they go through the course.

Balloons are a type of marine debris that many people don’t tend to think about. Balloons are frequently accidentally or even intentionally released into the environment and once they go up, they must also come down. A very sad reality is that many times balloons are found in the stomachs of dead marine mammals. Balloons and their ribbons are in the top 5 items of marine debris found on beach cleanups, and Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. volunteers have removed 6,179 balloons from our South Shore Bays and Beaches over the last 4 years. Exercise and Aging: Workout Safely After 50 In an ideal world, people young and old exercise each day. But as men and women age, ﬁnding time to work out is not so easy. Commitments to work and family often take precedence over daily exercise. As a result, many people 50 and over

might not have exercised regularly or at all in many years. But as children grow up or even move out, people facing down their golden years are often compelled to get back in the gym. That’s a wise decision that can increase a person’s chances of being healthy and happy in retirement. But before beginning a new exercise regimen, men and women over 50 should take heed of the following safety tips to ensure their efforts are not derailed by accident or injury. • Speak with your physician. The National Institute on Aging notes that even people with chronic

conditions such as heart disease, diabetes or arthritis can be physically active. However, anyone with such a condition and even those who don’t fall into those categories should consult with their physicians and receive a full physical before exercising. Such a consultation and checkup can shed light on any unknown issues, and physicians can offer advice on how to safely manage any problems that may arise. • Begin with low-intensity exercises. Even if you feel great and have maintained a healthy weight, don’t push yourself too hard at the start. Your body needs time to adjust to physical activity, so choose lowintensity exercises like walking and light strength training so your muscles, tendons and ligaments can adjust. Initially, exercise every other day so your body has ample time to recover between workouts.

• Choose the right places to exercise outdoors. Exercising outside provides the best of both worlds for many people, providing a chance to get healthy all while enjoying the great outdoors. When exercising outdoors, choose areas that are not remote and where others can see you and offer help if you suffer an injury or have an accident. Boardwalks, public parks and outdoor gyms are safer places to work out than wooded areas or other places well off the beaten path. • Stay hydrated. The NIA

notes that many people lose their sense of thirst as they age. But just because you aren’t thirsty does not mean you don’t need water, especially while exercising. Water regulates body temperature and lubricates the joints, thereby decreasing your risk of

injury during exercise. Exercising after 50 can help people live healthy well into retirement. But caution must be exercised when aging men and women return to exercise after a long break.

Seaford High School junior Pablo Hashem was invited to participate in the College Board’s National Hispanic Recognition Program. He was selected for his strong academic performance, including a high grade point average and earning a score on the PSAT that placed him among the top 2.5% of Hispanic and

Latino students who took the exam in the region. Pablo is very involved in the music program, in which he plays the alto saxophone. He is a drum major in the marching band as well as member of the jazz band, pep band, pit orchestra and Tri-M Music Honor Society. Additionally, he is a member of Model Congress

and has taken six Advanced Placement courses. The National Hispanic Recognition Program is an academic honor that can be included on college application. Colleges use the program to identify academically exceptional Hispanic and Latino students.

Citizenship and Leadership Two Seaford High School students were selected for American Legion Boy’s State, a leadership action program in which qualified male high school juniors participate in a practical government course. The Seaford American Legion selected Jason Linzer and Chris Surace to represent the post in this

year’s program, with Logan Masters and Ben Trink chosen as alternates. Eight juniors from the high school were chosen by the high school faculty to be interviewed by American Legion representatives. The program is designed to develop, in young citizens, a working knowledge of the structure

Displaying Technical Skills Three Seaford High School seniors earned awards at the Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Center’s annual student competition. Students from several school districts demonstrated their skills in numerous event categories for guests, which included administrators, teachers, families, potential employers and colleges. The competition was held at the Levittown Memorial Education Center.

Matthew Padgett placed first in the construction management competition. He had to install Tyvek wrapping and siding on a wall. This is his second year in the program and he plans to go to college for construction management, as he hopes to become a project manager. Freddy Vasquez finished first in the electrical technology category. His competition included electrical writing of outlets

and two lights. The firstyear GC Tech student said that while he aspires to be an architect, he enrolled in the electrical technology program to learn a new skill. Justin Paccione received third place in the automatic technology competition, in which he had to complete several repairs including spark plug changes and brake flaring. The aspiring automobile technician is in his second year in the program. Don’t stand by and do nothing when evil is happening. That was the message of Holocaust survivor Irving Roth for Seaford High School sophomores during the annual Holocaust Remembrance Day program on April 2. Mr. Roth, who has spoken at the school for nearly two decades, shared his personal stories about the Holocaust, including how Germany’s expansion through Europe drastically changed his life after growing up in

Czechoslovakia. He told students about his capture by the Nazis and how he managed to survive one of the darkest periods in human history. Two years after his April 1945 rescue by American soldiers, he moved to the United States. He later documented his experiences in his book, “Bondi’s Brother,” which he made available for students. Living Holocaust survivors are in their 80s and 90s, and Mr. Roth said that today’s students will be the last generation to

hear from them directly. He encouraged them to remember his story so they could share his message about the detrimental effects of hatred. Seaford High School 10th graders study World War II as part of the social studies curriculum and read “Night” by Elie Wiesel. Following Mr. Roth’s presentation, students watched “The Zookeeper’s Wife,” a movie about the owners of a zoo in Warsaw, Poland who sheltered 300 Jewish people.
