Catholic Elementary Schools High Technology and Strong Faith Working Together
The highly unusual circumstances of the COVID-19 outbreak, and subsequent shutting down of much of society, has helped to identify the things that really matter in our lives. The unique circumstances have tested our abilities to leverage the wealth of technologies that Catholic Elementary Schools have invested in, and tested the partnership between parents and educators. The families and students in our school communities have found comfort from the close relationship each has with their faith, and with each other, in the uncertainty introduced by the global pandemic. Academically, each student in a Catholic school was already a user of the Google apps for education (the Google G-Suite) and each student has a Google account that they can access from any
device, anywhere they can access the Internet. In the days leading up to the closing of the schools, the schools made sure that every student had access to a suitable device to continue their learning remotely, and loaned devices to students who needed them. Faculty responded quickly, with teachers ‘translating’ lesson plans to make them engaging and effective when presented online. Pastors and Principals orchestrated the activities and began each new day with morning announcements, a morning prayer, and the pledge of allegiance. School days continued, uninterrupted, right down to the acknowledgement of students celebrating birthdays. The tight communities around our schools worked together to maintain a sense of normalcy for the students.
As the schools and students enter another week, with the technical and educational challenges under control, students are completing and sharing projects online, they are seeing and interacting with their classmates in online forums. Students are attending Liturgies and prayer services online, and their schools have even begun to bring their art and music classes to them via Skype, Zoom and Google. The things that have always made Catholic school special all remain intact – and the warmth, love and support of these beautiful faith communities has never been more important. Increased anxiety related to concerns about coronavirus (COVID-19) is causing periods of interrupted sleep or insomnia for some. Catholic Health Services (CHS) experts offer tips on how to cope, saying getting the proper amount of sleep each night is vital to making sure your immune system is at peak performance. They add, a good night’s sleep sharpens mental acuity and leads to reduced stress levels. “During periods of high stress, it’s crucial to get sufficient sleep, because it can increase our chances of minimizing the impact of COVID-19 or other ailments,” explains St. Charles Hospital’s Sleep Disorders Center Coordinator Brendan Duffy, RPSGT, CCSH. “Sufficient sleep can help us reduce the time frame of
coronavirus and accelerate recovery.” A good night’s sleep is also vital for those living with illnesses such as diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease and depression. Experts say healthy sleep promotes better management of these underlying conditions. For most adults, generally, seven to eight hours of sleep is required to maintain optimal health. Adolescents need between 8 and 10 hours of sleep nightly and younger children required between nine and 11 hours of sleep each day. For those having difficulty falling asleep, or achieving a proper night’s sleep, Duffy offers several tips. *Reduce alcohol use and smoking *Take a warm shower just prior to bedtime *Take part in a pre-sleep
activity such as reading or meditation *Stay active and exercise at home to “earn” better sleep *Maintain a normal routine and resist the temptation to drastically extend your time in bed. Necessity – Still the Mother of Invention Science-minded Catholic School Family School Builds Ventilator in Kitchen

NECESSITY – STILL THE MOTHER OF INVENTION - Robert and Michael Stadelman work on their ventilator prototype on the floor of their kitchen. For one science and health-focused family in Long Island’s Catholic school community the global pandemic and cancellation of this year’s STEM Fair gave them the time, and the incentive they needed to go above and beyond what anyone could have expected. The Stadelman family, intrigued by the global shortage of medical ventilators, built a ventilator in their kitchen with items they had around the house and in Mr. Stadelman’s first aid kit. Meet Erin and Robert Stadelman, and their son Michael. Erin is a computer/technology teacher at Our Lady of the Hamptons Regional School in Southampton. Her
husband, Robert, works as an Electrical Engineer and volunteers as an EMTCC (Emergency Medical Technician - Critical Care) in their home town. Their son, Michael, is a student at St. Mary’s School in East Islip. Like the rest of us, they are respecting the quarantine by staying home. Also like the rest of us, the Stadelman’s wanted to do something to help. Unlike the rest of us, the Stadelman family actually used their time at home to build a ventilator! During the build, Robert Stadelman taught son Michael a lot about the inner components and machinations of a ventilator; about BVMs (bag valve masks), what a piston is and does, and Michael learned to work
with electronics and circuits. For Robert, this was a proof of concept prototype. “I sure with a little work we could improve this to be a viable emergency ventilator. Seaford High School teacher Michael Kerr is no stranger to SchoolArts magazine, a national publication for art educators. He had a story published in October 2018, and has now made an appearance in the April 2020 edition. Every issue of SchoolArts features a page of four clip cards which highlight art lessons from teachers across the country. Each clip card can be easily torn out and used as a resource for art teachers who want to try new activities with their students. Mr. Kerr submitted a
lesson from his sculpture class that was based off a popular 1980s toy, Madballs. He contacted the artist who created Madballs, James Groman, then turned it into an art project for his students. They used clay, acrylic paint and found objects for their clever creations. Some students made Madballs that were spoofs of pop culture references while others came up with ideas from their imaginations. “Art doesn’t always have to be so serious and pretentious,” Mr. Kerr said. “There’s time for art to be
straight up crazy.” The clip card included instructions for the lesson and necessary materials on one side, and a picture of a completed piece on the other. Senior Emel Acar had her finished piece featured in the national publication and said her inspiration was the “really gross” Madballs. Her creation was a face with big eyes and a long tongue, colored mostly green, purple and white. “I liked the freedom of the project,” she said, “and I liked using vibrant colors.”

How Earth Day And Environmental Conciousness Have Evolved
Reduce, reuse, recycle is a mantra for many people. It’s difficult to imagine that just 50 years ago awareness of the state of the environment was not part of the collective consciousness. An emerging public consciousness about the planet began amid environmental issues like increased air pollution and massive consumption of fossil fuels in the 1960s. The bestselling book “Silent Spring” by Rachel Carson also raised public concern for living organisms and the links between pollution and public health. The push for environmental reform gained even more momentum on April 22, 1970, when the first Earth Day was celebrated. Then-Senator Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin put Earth Day on the national stage following a large oil spill that struck off the coast of Santa Barbara, Calif. Before this disaster, recycling was not a word in the popular lexicon. But when the disaster struck, people began to reason that changes would have to be made to save the planet. Since the first Earth Day 50 years ago, many strides have been made in the environmental movement. This grassroots initiative gave rise to the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency, the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act. Environmental awareness has become much more mainstream and is a less polarizing issue than it was in the 1970s, although there are still debates about the reality of climate change and other risk factors.
Public demand for environmental safeguards grew in the second half of the twentieth century, and those demands have grown stronger in recent years. Legislation is continually evolving to protect the air, land and water. Sustainability has joined the buzzwords of the movement, and most industries now have a vested interest in changes that can minimize risk to human health and the environment. Mitigating or avoiding environmental effects, proper waste disposal, reduction in water discharge, and emphasis on reducing, reusing and recycling have become important components of environmental wellness. And people are being educated at earlier stages on the importance of environmental mindfulness. For example, core subjects of the environmental movement are increasingly covered in elementary schools. Twenty million people turned out for the first Earth Day in the United States. Today, more than 190 countries are engaged and more than one billion individuals are mobilized for action every Earth Day, advises the Earth Day Network. To mark the 50th anniversary, the most pressing topic for the year is climate change. Climate Action is the 2020 Earth Day theme to engage the global public. There is still work to be done, but great progress has been made since 1970.

Pet owners can rest easy that there is no reason to believe that dogs or cats in the United States might be a source of infection for the new coronavirus disease — COVID-19 — or cause its spread according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. And so far, according to the CDC, there have been no reports of pets becoming sick with COVID-19. This coronavirus appears to be primarily transmitted from human to human. As a pet owner, you may have heard of canine coronavirus, an intestinal infection in dogs, especially puppies, and feline coronavirus, which can cause feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). These types of coronaviruses have been around for quite some time and are not associated with the current outbreak. To protect yourself, your family, and possibly even
your pets, from this new coronavirus, you should follow these precautions: • Frequently wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water (use hand sanitizer with more than 60 percent alcohol if you can’t wash) • Avoid close contact with people who are sick—stay at least three feet away • Cover your mouth/ nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then throw away the used tissues and wash your hands • Stay at home if you are sick • Sanitize often-used surfaces in your home and office If you do become sick with COVID-19, how then should you care for your pet? event, the Seaford music program is present.” Mr. Romeo also cited parent involvement with three groups that support the music program including Bravo for the high school chorus, Encore for the high school band and Forte for elementary and middle school music. He also said that parents provide support at concerts, the summer music program and the summer marching band camp. The winter and spring concerts at all levels are strongly attended by families, community members, administrators and board of education trustees. Another strong aspect of the program, he explained, is that every school has dedicated spaces for music instruction and practices. General music instruction begins in kindergarten, and in fourth grade students can join band and chorus. At the middle school, there is general music, sixth grade band, sixth grade chorus, seventh and eighth grade band, seventh and eighth grade chorus, and jazz band. The high school has a barbershop vocal group, chamber orchestra, jazz band, marching band, pep band and symphonic band. Additionally, there are annual musicals at the middle school and high school.
Seaford’s music students regularly earn accolades including induction into the Tri-M Music Honor Society and selection to regional ensembles. This year, 41 students in grades 5-12 were named to Nassau Music Educators Association’s All-County music festival ensembles and two high school students earn spots at the All-State Music Festival, hosted by the New York State School Music Association. Seaford can add another achievement to the list, as the Best Communities for Music Education award program recognizes outstanding efforts by teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders. Designations are made to districts that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment and access to music education. “This is a well-deserved honor that reflects the hard work of our students and music faculty, as well as the longstanding support of the administration, Board of Education and Seaford community. Music is an integral part of a wellrounded education. Our music program thrives because students are able to explore their passions under the tutelage of our dedicated and inspiring teachers.”

A strong schoolcommunity connection helped garner national recognition for Seaford School District’s music program, earning a spot on the 2020 list of Best Communities for Music Education. It was the first time the district has earned this distinction from the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation. Music department chairman Anthony Romeo, a band teacher at Seaford High School, completed the extensive application and explained that he highlighted the numerous ways that student musicians are involved in the community. Seaford music ensembles perform annually at the Wellness Council’s Hot Chocolate Run, fire department holiday tree lighting, Historical Society fall festival, 9/11 memorial service, Little League opening day, Memorial Day ceremony and homecoming. The marching band has participated in the New York City St. Patrick’s Day parade for more than 30 years, and a community marching band brings together musicians from the high school and the Seaford community. “We do such much in the community,” he said. “At just about every single
