Town Seeks Counselors For Summer Recreation Program Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced that the Town is seeking counselors for its 2022 Summer Recreation Program. The six-week program provides a rewarding employment experience for counselors as they work with children and make a difference. “This great summer job is ideal for residents age 16 or older who are looking to build their

The War On Ukraine And The Legacy Of World War II The Museum Of American Armor Will Field An Education Day For Long Island’s High School Students That Connects History To Headlines ﬁeld tactics, and mock small arms in open woods reminiscent of World War II France. Lawrence Kadish, president and founder of the museum, said, “There has been a deliberate reduction in class time assigned to teaching history, and World War II in particular. As a result, many students have no context for what the world is seeing in Ukraine and how Putin is repeating Hitler’s playbook almost to the letter. We need to appreciate that today’s headlines were written by history and this program seeks to address that.” Gloria Sesso, the Armor Museum’s education coordinator and copresident of the Long Island Council for the Social Studies, explained, “This program creates an immersion program for

students that integrates classroom study guides with an extraordinary ﬁeld experience. As the classroom returns to normal following COVID this program regains the ability to tell the story of World War II, its legacy,

and why the chilling scenes we are seeing in Ukraine are yet another chapter written by that conﬂict.” Dr. Libby O’Connell, History Channel Chief Historian Emeritus and Chairperson of the NYC World War I Centennial

Commission, said, “This day-long program has the means to become a statewide model for ﬁeld trips that place students in a period of time that remains a pivotal moment in world history. Those school districts that participate

Stating that today’s headlines about Russia’s war on Ukraine were written some 80 years ago as a grim legacy of World War II, the Museum of American Armor, the Long Island Living History Association (LILHA) and Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation & Museums will conduct a joint educational ﬁeld program that will allow thousands of Long Island high school students to strengthen their understanding of World War II and the shadow it continues to cast nearly a century later. The Sarah Grace Foundation for Children With Cancer, Inc. is once again calling all runners, walkers, cyclists and wheelchair athletes for its 2022 virtual 5K. Participants in the “Hugs for Sarah 2022 Virtual 5K” can run alone, with a friend or with a team, and all entrants will receive a custom race bib and medal. Registration is online only and will take place through April 30 with a registration fee of $35. Participants can sign up on the Foundation’s website, https:// thesarahgracefoundation. org/shop-donate/. “In the absence of in-person fundraising events, virtual events have become crucial in helping fulﬁll the Sarah Grace Mission: providing smiles to children with cancer, one child at a time!” said Matt Weippert, president of the Foundation. “As we enter a post pandemic world we look forward to once again hosting in-person events such as our annual Night of Laughter and perhaps an in-person 5K” An email address is required during registration in order for participants to receive their race bibs. Teacher Nancy Prefer said her students were excited to add their personal touch to the movement breaks they love so much. The young programmers worked on creating the videos with physical education teacher Suzanne Mooney. She recently took a course on using technology to support physical education, and began by incorporating Dance Party into her classes as

a warmup activity. Fifth graders loved the idea and expanded it by using in for movement breaks in the classroom, which allows them to exercise, release energy and refocus on schoolwork. Ms. Mooney has been posting the videos made by the ﬁfth graders on her teacher website so all Harbor classes can access them. She added that the younger students particularly enjoy exercising to the videos created by their older siblings.
