I remember angles lots of angles shoulders, elbows, jaw and Old Spice. I remember a voice like gravel angular, uneven, an instantly soothing like water spilling over rocks. I remember a well worn Yankee cap and sudsy beer, lots of it the ensuing brawl with Tess always capped with laughter. I remember that laughter honest boundless and everywhere the sly stealthy humor the genial ready wink. I remember licorice and Santa Clauses sundaes and Church stained glass and collection baskets lots of those. I remember the end with countless living tears I remember a man like a blanket embracing, healing channeling life. I remember love I remember my grandfather.

Random Rambles By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s been a rough year. Less than four months in and, well, I know many people who are already looking for a do-over. Sure, every period of time has its ups and downs, highs and lows. But honestly, since the moment the ball dropped in Times Square this past New Year’s Eve, it seems that everything began falling right along with it. At least it’s Spring. There is something uplifting about sunshine-filled afternoons and flower blossoms that does bring a smile to the face, however fleeting it may be. And of course, those sunworshippers among us have to be looking forward to

summer and beach outings and barbeques. But until then… It’s April. April 15th, to be exact, as I write these words. Tax Day (although, technically speaking, we were graced with a few extra days tacked on to the filing deadline this year). The Easter Bunny has come and gone. Baseball diamonds are abuzz with activity. Pretty soon, school will be out of session and the parks and pools will be flooded with families having fun. And so it goes. From dawn until dusk, one season into the next, day after day, week after week, month after month; until, before you know it, a decade has passed in the blink of an eye. In just a couple of

weeks, I will be celebrating my 11th year as editor and columnist at this very paper. How much has changed in that span of time… The best thing we can do – the only thing, really – is to embrace each day, with all its nuances, and appreciate whatever it may bring into our respective lives. The list of things beyond our control is endless; the key to happiness lies in how we react to them, what we learn from them, and how we use them to better ourselves as individuals. I’m no philosopher, but that much I’ve picked up in my 33 years roaming this planet. Here’s wishing everyone a brighter tomorrow… and the day after… and the day after…

Umps Visit Vets When Major League Baseball Umpire Jerry Layne talks, people listen. Whether calling balls and strikes in major league games or telling amusing baseball anecdotes to injured and ill veterans at VA medical centers - he gets attention. He’ll be telling those stories and more to veterans on April 14th, during a special celebrity visit to the VA NY

Harbor Healthcare System, in New York. Umpires have the reputation of being gruff, no nonsense guys who don’t want their judgment questioned, but Jerry’s heart overflows when he visits injured and ill veterans in VA medical centers. He’s been umpiring in the majors since 1988, a profession which demands that he

visit each city on the major league circuit. It’s during those trips that he takes time to visit veterans who are patients in VA medical centers as part of the DAV VA Voluntary Service (VAVS) program. “I want to bring smiles and brighter days to those veterans who have given so much to our country,” Mr. Layne said. “I want them to know they are

appreciated.” There are 197 VA medical centers in the US which treat the 2.3 million veterans represented by the DAV. Many veterans spend long, lonely hours during lengthy hospital stays and Mr. Layne’s visits are

enthusiastically welcomed. Major League Baseball Umpire Larry Barnett started the hospital visit program in 1977 as part of the DAV VAVS program and actively recruited Mr. Layne. “We have a free country

because veterans made it free and keep it free,” Mr. Layne said. “Brightening the lives of injured and ill veterans with a friendly visit is a very small price to pay for what all Americans owe them.”

Helping Hunger The 2015 National League pennant champions New York Mets are once again teaming up with Island Harvest Food Bank for the annual “Home Run to End Hunger” event, sponsored by Petro Home Services, to raise funds to help provide food support to the more than 300,000

Seaford High School students sat silent and attentive as they hung on the words of 86-year-old Holocaust survivor Irving Roth. He took students on a journey from his happy boyhood in Czechoslovakia to the confusion and horror he endured as a teenager in Auschwitz and Buchenwald during World War II, to his final release and journey home. “Many people in Europe were transformed; law abiding people were converted to murderers. How is this possible? Roth asked.”…In 1935, my world was beautiful, I was a six-year-old boy, I played soccer and loved school, but in Nazi Germany, Jewish kids were getting kicked out of school,” he said. “At 10 years-old, during summer vacation, I was forbidden to go to the beach with my friends and in the winter, when it was cold, I had to turn in my sheepskin coat because Jews were not allowed to have anything that was defined as a luxury,” he continued. “I had to wear a yellow sign that identified myself as a Jew and could not be seen on the street at night. By 1940, I was no longer allowed at school. They set up a Jewish school with all the Jewish teachers that were fired. Jewish businesses were taken away.” “On January 20th, 1942 in a mansion outside Berlin, a plan was made to create gas chambers and crematoriums, and the process began en masse,” Roth said. “In Czechoslovokia, 1800 of 2000 Jews marched into the synagogue and a day and half later they disappeared; they were told they were being resettled. I was lucky; my family was spared. My whole family left for Hungry, the only place where Jews were not persecuted. Instead, they were put into labor camps with little food,” he explained. “By 1943, Germany was no longer expanding because other countries were winning the war,” he continued. “In 53 days, 437,000 Jews were picked up from their homes for the death camp in Auschwitz. I was on one of those trains. The train stops. It’s night. They tell us

to get up quickly and to take nothing with you. I can see fire coming out of chimneys. My brother and I were separated from our grandparents. People were told to undress, leave clothes on hooks, they were given soap and told to go in the showers where a poisonous chemical descended and killed my aunt, grandmother and 10 year-old cousin,” he recounted. “Jewish men had the job of taking the bodies one flight up to the ovens. More than 1.2 million Jews were murdered at Auschwitz. At 14, I was assigned to drain swamps and worked early morning to late at night and only had black coffee in the morning, soup at lunch and a piece of bread for dinner.

They had doctors checking us to see if we were well enough to live…My brother and I survived,” he said. “In March, 1945 we were transported on a cold train to another camp that was worse. We were lucky to have a potato every two days and we did hard, useless work carrying heavy rocks from point A to point B as guards watched. I was down to 75 pounds,” he said. “In 1945, the war finally ended. There was an air raid and the next morning all the guards disappeared. Two American guards arrived. Here I am 15 years old in Germany, alone, and they are feeding me good food. They gave me

clothes. But what do I do now? I decided to go back to the village from where I was taken,” he said. “Maybe some of my family will be back. In June, 1945 I arrived in the village and I found my mother and she was so happy, she fainted. Both of my parents survived because they were in Budapest.” The family began a new life in the United States when they landed in New York Harbor in 1947. Roth, who is currently the Director of the Holocaust Resource CenterTemple Judea of Manhasset and an adjunct professor at Long Island University, C.W. Post Campus, made a lifelong commitment to educate others of the atrocities he endured and the evils of prejudice and anti-Semitism. Roth had two requests of his audience: “One, if you see evil, make sure you do something about it. And, two, share my story with your children so they will know how people are transformed and that it can never happen again,” he said. After his talk, students had the opportunity to purchase his memoir, “Bondi’s Brother,” which is also available online. Reacting to his presentation, sophomore Lauren Paladino said, “He was really inspiring and very impactful. It was great to get a firsthand account. It is something I will always remember.” Classmate Maria Cooley agreed, “Everyone should find a way to educate themselves on this topic.” Social Studies Chairperson Linda Kratzer, who organizes the event every year, said, “We all need to give credit to Mr. Roth who endured horrific experiences and was able to walk away with a positive life message.” The day also included a performance by the Honors Chorale, directed by Yvonne Bendzlowicz and the movie “Hotel Rowanda” in which students got another perspective of some of the worst atrocities that took place 20 years ago in Rowanda.
