At the fourth-grade level, students designed pasta rovers to create a lunar or Mars rover that travels down a ramp. Fifthgraders designed a marble ride roller coaster and timed each creation to see which marble traveled the slowest.

Shopping with a Chance of Meatballs

I love food shopping. Not browsing for clothes. Not trying on shoes. But aimlessly wandering the aisles of the grocery store, scanning each shelf for potential ingredients in my always innovative “culinary creations”… that, I find enjoyable. This fascination with the supermarket dates back to when I was quite a bit younger, as I recall thinking what fun it would be to have a job stocking shelves with boxes and cans, bottles and bags. Perhaps it was the meticulous lining up of items that appealed to me; needless to say, I did not go on to make a career in this field after all. Growing up, I had zero interest in cooking, or even observing the process involved. Anything beyond using the toaster or microwave, perhaps

the oven on rare occasions, seemed beyond the scope of skills I wanted to learn. Boiling water? Nope. Not even a chance. I had visions of scalding liquids cascading over the top of the pot, pasta and all. And so it remained; until, that is, I moved into my own apartment and realized that perhaps cooking was one of those basic necessities that one needed to master in order to exist in the real world. {along with doing laundry, but that’s a story for another column} And so, with some helpful hints from Mom, and plenty of mixing and matching and “trying” various combinations of things, I began to slowly master this ancient art. By master, I mean I have accumulated enough variations of pasta dishes

and “fancy” salads to get by most weeks. Anything more intricate – well, that’s still a work in progress. Case in point: I have still not attempted, nor do I have any desire to, any entrees involving meats. No raw chopped meat or chicken cutlets or pork chops to tangle with for this girl. I’ve often said I could probably get by being a vegetarian, and one look in the meat department seems to confirm this notion every time. Not that I don’t want to learn how to make a nice traditional Italian sauce with meatballs. I often ask my mom to show me how, with one caveat – can I wear rubber gloves while rolling them? And that, dear readers, is why sauce has yet to be added to my repertoire.

The Wantagh School District has appointed Dr. Marc J. Ferris as Assistant Superintendent for Instruction, effective July 1st. Dr. Ferris, a Garden City resident, joins Wantagh from the North Shore School District, where he served as principal and assistant principal of North Shore Middle School since 2002. He previously taught social studies at Frank Carey High School in the Sewanhaka Central School District and is currently an adjunct professor at both Hofstra University and LIU Post, where he teaches courses in developing instructional learning communities, leadership and supervision, data informed decisionmaking and leadership in education. Dr. Ferris holds a doctoral degree in education from Hofstra University, as well as a master’s degree each in social studies and leadership, technology and administration from New York University. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in history with a minor in education from Washington & Jefferson College. “We are very fortunate to have such a qualified candidate to replace Mr. McNamara, as he assumes the role of Superintendent of Schools,” said Maureen Goldberg, Wantagh’s current superintendent who will retire at the end of the school year. Survivor Speaks Seaford High School sophomores got a first-hand account of the atrocities that took place in Nazi concentration camps during World War II when 87-yearold Holocaust survivor Irving Roth shared his horrific experiences as a teenager in Auschwitz and Buchenwald. His presentation - part of an all-day event held at the high school each year in commemoration of Holocaust Remembrance Day - brought to life what students have been learning in the classroom and gave them a chilling perspective on this incredible breakdown on humanity that could only be told by a surviving eyewitness. Mr. Roth, who was born in Kosice, Czechoslovakia in 1929, began by describing his happy childhood, “In 1935, my world was beautiful, I was a six-yearold boy, I played soccer and loved school.” He then proceeded to describe the various ways the rights of the Jewish people were stripped away. “By 1942 in a mansion outside Berlin, a plan was made to create gas chambers and crematoriums…by 1943, 437,000 Jews were picked up from their homes for the death camp in Auschwitz,” he said. “I was on one of those trains. The train stops. It’s night. They tell us to get up quickly and to take nothing with you. I can see fire coming out of chimneys. My brother, Bondi, and I were separated from our grandparents. People were told to undress, leave clothes on hooks, they were given soap and told to go in the showers where a poisonous chemical descended and killed my aunt, grandmother and 10-year-old cousin,” he recounted. “Jewish men had the job of taking the bodies one flight up to the ovens. More than 1.2 million Jews

were murdered at Auschwitz.” Mr. Roth described how he was always hungry; always tired, was down to 75 pounds and had to do hard, meaningless labor all day long. He then described even worse conditions at another camp and how he was separated from his brother and never saw him again. In 1945, at 15 years old, the war ended. American guards arrived and suddenly he was given food and clothing and was free to go. He went back to his village where he found his mother, who “was so happy, she fainted,” he

said. Both of his parents survived, he said, because they were living in Budapest. The family began a new life in the United States when they landed in New York Harbor in 1947. Mr. Roth, who is currently the Director of the Holocaust Resource Center-Temple Judea of Manhasset and an adjunct professor at Long Island University, C.W. Post Campus, made a lifelong commitment to educate others of the

They also had the chance to purchase his book, “Bondi’s Brother,” which he personally signed and is also available online. “Mr. Roth’s presentation was really eye-opening,” said sophomore Raj Mahadan. “It made it real after learning about it in the classroom.” Classmate Caitlin Bianculli added, “It was really good to get a personal pointof- view.” Social Studies Chairperson Linda Kratzer, whose department works collaboratively with the English Language Arts Department chaired by Linda Kanarek to coordinate the event, said, “We all need to give credit to Mr. Roth who endured horrific experiences and was able to walk away with a positive life message.” The day also included a somber performance by the Honors Chorale, a viewing of “Schindler’s List” and a debriefing period followed by breakout discussion sessions.

New Horizons After working on an engineering design unit, Wantagh Horizons program students at Mandalay Elementary School successfully launched remotely operated vehicles at the Wantagh Park boat launch under the direction of teacher Renee MacDermott and marine scientist Brett Curlew.

Prior to the launch, the students learned about density and buoyancy and then designed, sketched and built their ROVs in teams, using PVC pipe, bilge pipe motors, a central box battery and cameras. They had to precisely calculate the vehicles’ mass through water displacement and then add foam insulation in order to

make the vehicles perfectly buoyant. During the launch, it was important for the ROVs to float close to the bottom of the water, so they could be driven and manipulated with the motors. All of the teams were able to view the rocks, algae and fish living underwater.

Honors Band Festival Adding another musical achievement to their repertoire, four Seaford High School student musicians were selected to perform in the 13th annual LIU Post Honors Band Festival at Tilles Center for the Performing Arts on April 2nd. Seniors Ellen Park, a flutist, Juliana Groder, a trumpeter, Kayla Marino, a clarinetist and junior Dan Weber, who plays the tuba, were nominated for the band by their teachers,

Anthony Romeo and Christopher Coniglio, and were selected by LIU based on those nominations and their talent. The students spent a weekend working with renowned composer Andrew Boysen Jr. as well as Dr. James McRoy of LIU Post and then performed a concert on Sunday night. The students represented Seaford as one of 34 schools across Long Island that was chosen to participate in this selective event. “It is an absolute

honor for these student musicians to be selected to participate in this festival,” Coniglio said. “It was an amazing experience and they grew tremendously as musicians.” The students have also been named All-County musicians by the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) and perform with the Seaford High School Symphonic Band and Pep Band. Juliana also performs in Jazz Band.
