A Seaford High School girls soccer player was named to a prestigious travel team and will venture to France this fall for an international tournament. Junior Olivia Pearse was one of 18 players chosen to represent the United States as a member of the U.S. Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program’s national team. Olivia got her start playing soccer when she was 3 and joined her first organized team with the Levittown Soccer Club. In seventh grade, she was a member of Seaford’s junior varsity team and moved up to varsity a year later. A midfielder and forward for the Vikings, Olivia was an All-County player as a freshman, All-Conference as a sophomore and both All-County and All-State this past season. With a desire to play at the professional level,
Olivia has always looked for additional opportunities to play soccer, develop her skills and showcase her abilities. After trying out for the ODP, she was named to the Eastern New York team and was among hundreds of soccer players who attended a camp at Rider University. From there, Olivia earned a spot on the East Region team, the only player from New York to do so, and competed in a tournament in Boca Raton, Florida against teams from three other regions. Twenty-three girls were picked to attend ODP’s national training camp in Tampa in January, and 18 were selected for the national team, scheduled for tournament play from Oct. 23 to Nov. 3 in France. “Soccer lets my whole personality come out,” she said. “I like the competitiveness of it and
where it can take me in life.” Olivia credits her success to her family, teammates and coaches, particularly varsity head coach Ken Botti, her father, Rob Pearse, who coached her for five seasons with the Levittown Wildcats, and Ron Alber, her coach with the ECNL Girls Elite Soccer League based in East Meadow. “There are a lot of people that have supported me and who I have learned from,” she said. “My dad was a tremendous influence on my early soccer years and encouraged me to get better and better.” Although she still has another year to play for Seaford, she has already committed to playing for Hofstra after graduation, a decision she made because of both is strong soccer program and academic reputation.

Stony Brook University Hospital Accepting i-Pad Donations for Telehealth Distancing Measures Members of the community have been reaching out and asking how they can help the healthcare professionals and those afflicted with COVID-19 pandemic. One very important way: we need an influx of iPads to keep our inpatients connected to their providers and their families. Anyone who has an iPad that is not being used, please consider donating to Stony Brook University Hospital. We will repurpose the donated device to provide telecommunication for our patients to connect
with our medical staff. We are looking for about one hundred devices of a supported iPad model. Before donation, the device should be cleaned, reset (click here for instructions), and placed in a zip lock bag if possible with a viable power chord. It takes a team effort to convert these devices into a secure patient friendly solution. We will do our best to make your gift count and give someone comfort during these remarkable times. The donations of medical supplies and comfort care items such as gum, lip balm, tissues and
snacks have been pouring in and we appreciate the community’s response. We’ve also received many video messages of support and are sharing those throughout the hospital. Please keep them coming! North Shore Animal League America’s Adoption Center is currently conducting adoption by appointment only. Our Adoption Team is contacting pre-approved adopters with a scheduled day and time to complete their adoption. The health and wellbeing of NSALA staff, volunteers, adopters, and the community remains our priority at this time. We currently have over 40 dogs of various ages and sizes on campus, as well as more than 100 felines, from kittens to older cats, all looking for loving homes. As always, the animals on the NSALA Port Washington campus are being well-cared for by our devoted staff. In addition to finding homes for more than 110 canines, some of whom were from our recent Mill Dog rescue (we saved 100 dogs and puppies from deplorable
conditions with some going to our area shelter partners,) we have also placed more than 30 animals into foster homes. During this time, the Alex Lewyt Veterinary Medical Center will remain open to see sick patients and emergency cases only. While we are doing adoptions by appointment, NSALA’s Adoption Center is temporarily closed to the general public in accordance with New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo’s statewide directives and to control the number of people in the Adoption Center at any one time. How Does The New Coronavirus Affect You And Your Pets?
Pet owners can rest easy that there is no reason to believe that dogs or cats in the United States might be a source of infection for the new coronavirus disease — COVID-19 — or cause its spread according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. And so far, according to the CDC, there have been no reports of pets becoming sick with COVID-19. This coronavirus appears to be primarily transmitted from human to human. As a pet owner, you may have heard of canine coronavirus, an intestinal infection in dogs, especially puppies, and feline coronavirus, which can cause feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). These types of coronaviruses have been around for quite some time and are not associated with the current outbreak. To protect yourself, your family, and possibly even
your pets, from this new coronavirus, you should follow these precautions: • Frequently wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water (use hand sanitizer with more than 60 percent alcohol if you can’t wash) • Avoid close contact with people who are sick—stay at least three feet away • Cover your mouth/ nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then throw away the used tissues and wash your hands • Stay at home if you are sick • Sanitize often-used surfaces in your home and office If you do become sick with COVID-19, how then should you care for your pet? The CDC recommends that you restrict contact with pets and other animals just as you would with people. Ask another member of your
household to care for your pets while you are sick. If you must do it yourself, wash your hands before and after you interact and wear a facemask.
