‘Shed the Meds’ Event April 17th National Drug Takeback Day to Properly Dispose of Old Medications Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced that the Town, in partnership with Drug Free Long Island and the Nassau County Police Department (NCPD), will host a ‘Shed the Meds’ event at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa on Saturday, April 17th from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. “The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to partner with Drug Free LI and the Nassau County Police Department on this important initiative to keep prescription drugs out of the wrong hands,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Through proper disposal of old medications, we can prevent them from contaminating the environment through improper disposal and also keep them out of the hands of young people.” The event will take place at Marjorie Post Park (off Unqua Road in Massapequa), in the parking lot near the community center. residents of all ages to pitch in and help make a difference in our community!” Volunteers are invited to participate in the cleanup, which will run from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The central meeting place will be Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park launching ramps and waterfront gazebo off of Larrabee Avenue, Oyster Bay. Additional locations for the clean-up include Theodore Roosevelt Beach in Oyster Bay, Stehli Beach in Bayville and Centre Island Beach in Bayville. Typically, in year’s past, harbor and beach cleanup events have resulted in about forty thousand pounds of debris collected by

volunteers. Councilwoman Johnson stated, “Each year, countless amounts of paper, food, plastics and other trash are discarded on beaches or dumped overboard from recreational and commercial vessels. Seaford Middle School students wanted to do their part to say “thank you” to the men and women who have gone above and beyond during the pandemic, so they recently put together care packages for frontline workers and first responders. The initiative was spearheaded by the Service Club, under the direction of advisers Amanda Smith and Julis Spellman. The club used funds from its budget to purchase items

for the care packages such as candy and snacks, Chapstick, hand lotion, hand sanitizer and small toys. Eighth grader Ava O’Keefe said she and her fellow club members decided what items they wanted to include to brighten the day of those essential workers. “It’s our way of saying that we care,” she said. The Service Club put together more than 100 care packages. Each one also included

a handwritten thankyou card and a message of appreciation on the bag. Care packages were distributed through family members of students and teachers who work as emergency medical technicians, firefighters, nurses and more. “For me it was important to do this because it shows the frontline workers that we appreciate them,” sixth grader Mya Reeves said.

Contractors For Kids (CFK) is a non-profit organization, which was founded for the purpose of providing assistance to families in Long Island communities. Their goal is to assist children and their families overcome obstacles that have unfortunately changed or have impacted their lives through the sickness, injury or death of a child. They are committed to this cause and want to give hope and reassurance for the futures of Long Islanders. CFK was founded in 2005 by Kevin Harney and Alan Nahmias of Stalco Construction. Kevin and Alan, both long-time philanthropists, saw the growing need for financial assistance in our communities and knew that something more needed to be done. Through random acts of kindness, they were slowly changing the lives of others, however they thirsted to make more change so they decided to form this non-profit, Contractors For Kids. The Board of Directors, members, supporters and volunteers of CFK are all “Contractors For Kids.” They are all helping others and building futures for children and their families in need. Their organization runs on donations only and is volunteer based, they have no employees. One family at a time, they make sure that the financial hardship brought on by sickness, injury or death does not destroy an already hurting family. Whether it is to pay a phone bill or a mortgage payment, they want to be there to help. So how do you qualify to get help? It’s quite simple. If you can prove that you are struggling financially because of the sickness, injury or death of a child, you live on Long Island (in Nassau or Suffolk County), and you have filled out their Application For Assistance, they will get in touch with you to see how they can be of help! Contractors For Kids is local to the core. They know our Island well and they love to help locals. Their office is

located in Holbrook and they have no plans of going anywhere. The pandemic took its toll on CFK, as it did on many, but they stayed aﬂoat and are thankful for the opportunity to continue to make a difference. Since 2005, CFK has given out more than 3 MILLION DOLLARS to help local Long Islanders. Here are some of the areas they’ve helped others ﬁnancially: Rent, Mortgage Payments, Oil Deliveries, Utility Bills, Food, Transportation To & From Hospitals, Co-Payments, Medications & Funeral Expenses. Donations are so important to CFK, especially being that they receive no grant money. They would like to thank all thsoe who attended their Scavenger Hunt fundraising event on April 10th. Their next fundraising event will be a golf outing on June 14th, stay tuned for more information!
