She noted that it is important for people to be able to talk about their feelings and emotions, and if children see that example being set by high school students, it will make them more comfortable to do so. In the doing meaningful things you enjoy session, children thought about everything that brings them happiness and drew pictures on paper snowflakes. “I enjoyed making students aware of their emotional well-being and that they should make time for what makes them happy in life,” said Joe Saurman. Madison DiMonda and Katherine Hoehn, members of the managing your thoughts group, led elementary school students in an activity to explore how they feel on different days of the week. They discussed ways to turn negative feelings into positives ones and shared a muscle relaxation technique that reduces stress. Their group used emoji cards with pictures of different feelings to help children understand the wide range of emotions they can experience. The cards also closely mirrored the mood meter, which was introduced throughout the district this year. Natalie Villecco said her

group talked to students about forgiveness. They explained that holding grudges creates negative energy and prohibits growth. Forgiveness, she said, fosters a positive mindset and creates peace of mind. For an activity, students wrote down their negative emotions on paper and threw it into a bag. Children then held the bag to show how those bad feelings can weigh someone down. “I thought it was a really great experience to communicate with the younger children to see how much they knew and how much they learned from this,” Natalie said. High school Principal Nicole Schnabel said that they are looking to make the Brackett Leadership Team a formal club for next year. The goal is for the elementary presentations to become an annual occurrence, adding another resource that supports the mental well-being of Seaford’s students. She added that she is really proud of her student leaders for the effort they put in to planning the inaugural workshops. “They really thought about the impact they could have on our elementary students,” Ms. Schnabel said, “and realized the power they had to make a difference.”

To emphasize the important of mental health, the Seaford School District enlisted the help of its own student leaders, who successfully planned and presented workshops to fourth and fifth graders. About two dozen students from the Brackett Leadership Team spoke to students on a variety of topics at Seaford Harbor and Manor elementary schools in March. The group is named after Dr. Marc Brackett, the founder of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, who is working with the district this year as part of an increased emphasis on the social, emotional and mental well-being of students. Dr. Brackett presented to district staff and high school student leaders before the school year began. High school students from the BLT split into groups to create presentations on seven topics: doing meaningful things you enjoy, forgiveness, healthy relationships, managing your life smartly, managing your thoughts, physiological regulation and self-care. They created digital presentations as well as hands-on activities for their elementary peers. Taylor DiFondi, who was part of the physiological regulation team, said she and her partners taught

Hope for Youth www.hfyny.org Hope For Youth’s dedicated team of staff, volunteers and interns facilitates positive change in the lives of Long Island children, youth and families. The non-proﬁt runs what they call a Kinship Caregiver Program, which helps create a better Long Island by offering a child a pathway to a better future. Sadly, children may be removed from their homes for many reasons. Nationally, the four key reasons are neglect, parental drug use, a caretaker’s inability to cope and physical abuse. Equally as sad, Long Island, like many communities across the country, is in dire need of foster parents for children from birth to the age of 18, whether these caregivers have informal or formal custody of children. Such care isn’t always provided by unrelated individuals. When provided by a relative, it’s called “kinship care.” Kinship foster parents must provide full-time protection and nurturing of a child, as well as a stable and safe home. They must be above the age of 21 and meet a number of additional eligibility requirements. Designated kinship foster parents receive various types of ﬁnancial support. They also receive family services, case management support and other supportive services.

Allowing this litter to remain on our shorelines will only lead to increasingly worse damage for the environment. Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc. , a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, has launched a new program for children ages 2-5 years. The Barnyard Buddies Program is a hands-on learning program which involves Pal-O-Mine’s therapy animals. It is facilitated by experienced and licensed educational and healthcare professionals who will use an experiential approach to learning. Its unique, age-appropriate curriculum includes social-emotional, physical, cognitive, and imaginative concepts and activities such as expressive art projects. Additionally, it incorporates focused exposure to pre-reading/ reading, mathematics, and

problem-solving skills. Children enjoy learning in Pal-O-Mine’s naturalistic learning environment full of positive support. Children of all levels of abilities are welcome. The Barnyard Buddies program consists of four sessions held once a week on Tuesday mornings at Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, 829 Old Nichols Road, Islandia, NY. Session dates are April 26th, May 3rd, May 10th and May 17th. Each session is 90-minutes long and begins at 9:30 AM and ends at 11:00 AM. Sessions are limited to a maximum of ten children. One parent or caregiver must accompany each child. The fee for the fourweek program is $150 per child and must be paid in full prior to the first session. With his grant money from Bethpage, Gus and his troop created new garden beds, including two wheelchair-accessible garden beds so that everyone could enjoy and take part in the upkeep of the garden. They also re-mulched the area and created a “Park Pride” sign on the front fence of the garden. Bethpage encourages parents, mentors, teachers, family and friends to encourage the children in their lives to get involved in their local communities.
