Brinkley Smithers, Adele Smithers rose to new heights to bring awareness, advocacy, education and support services to the field of alcoholism and drug addiction. She was a pioneer in promoting a better public understanding of alcoholism as a preventable, treatable and respectable disease. And, as such requires treatment and

continuing care to support a life lived in recovery. Mrs. Nikki and Mr. Christopher Smithers will continue her legacy. The Smithers Family Center at Columbia University Medical Center for prevention, research and treatment opened last year. The Smithers family is proud of LICADD and its success in helping millions of people across the New York area. This year’s Keynote Speaker will be Filmmaker Greg Williams. His groundbreaking documentary, The Anonymous People, highlights the importance of sharing recovery stories in order to decrease stigma and inspire more people to get help. Smithers, a champion in the field of addiction and recovery. The Community Champion Award will be received by Suffolk County Police Commissioner, Tim Sini. The Angel Ball will take place on Monday, May 1st, at the Garden City Hotel in Garden City. Olympiad Contest For the ninth consecutive year, members of Division Avenue High School’s Science Olympiad team qualified for the New York State Finals competition held at Le Moyne College in Syracuse on March 10th-11th. After months of preparation and numerous invitational competitions on Long Island, at Yale University and in the North

Poconos, the talented students collectively won medals in 20 out of 25 events. In the New York State Finals, all four seniors on the team earned state medals. In addition, Sonia Inderit and Michael Mulqueen received a $2,500 scholarship to attend Le Moyne College. The following is a list of winners in the New York State Finals:

East Broadway Elementary School students in Levittown have added ballroom dance to their list of educational skills. The students have been learning the tango, merengue, fox trot and rumba during a 10-week workshop with dance instructor Jessica Salvesen of Dancing Classroom of

Long Island. “My goal has been to push the students out of their comfort zones,” Salvesen said. “Through dance, they become more self-confident.” The students gather in the school’s front lobby where they are paired with partners and dance together in a circle.

Record Breaking

Half way through each practiced step, the students are then instructed to change partners, allowing them to work with a range of abilities. At the end of each session, two students are chosen to present their favorite “move,” which is then incorporated into a modern line dance with popular music.

MacArthur High School lacrosse player Erin Vaughan Ware now holds the record for highest scorer in assists, points and goals for the Generals, having scored 257 points, 157 goals and 100 assists during her tenure on the varsity team. For a third time, Newsday has also named the third-time Long Island All-American one of Long Island’s Top 100 players.

When questioned about her prescription for success, Erin said, “I am very self-motivated and not afraid to fail.” Erin started her lacrosse career during second grade as a member of the Lady Tomahawks, a town team. She said she started playing with the stick in her right hand, but soon learned she was a leftie. “My first shot was a total failure,” she added.

Stepping on the Floor

Erin keeps fit in the offseason as a sprinter on the winter track team. She also played basketball with the Amateur Athletic Union through her junior year. During her sophomore year, Erin signed a national letter of intent to continue her sport at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry, New York where she will pursue her studies in communications and public relations.
