City Strolls have been documented in past columns - my futile attempt to cross as many of these “bucket list” items off of said list. From trying to time our return trip over the BK bridge to photograph sunset {while toting nearly an entire leftover pizza from Grimaldi’s} … to finding a “shortcut” through the Park that somehow managed to add about five miles to the journey … to winding up on the steps of Lincoln Center thoroughly out of breath, shoes in hand (documented in one of aforementioned past columns), just in the knick of time for the ballet … the stories are endless and, in retrospect, quite funny. And yet, there remain so many more nooks and crannies left to explore, museum exhibits to browse, restaurants to sample, culture to take in. Of course, there are
activities to indulge in during any season in New York; it’s just, the thought of exploring them seems particularly inviting in the spring. Perhaps this month, maybe next. Path to be determined. {And, inevitably, rerouted. Several times.} I have often thought how nice it would be to reside right there, at the center of it all. But, as with most things, it seems the daily routine is what ultimately wears on people and strips away the novelty of living in one of the greatest cities in the world. Visiting, however often - or seldom - it might be, keeps the perspective fresh and full of untapped adventure and excitement. So does randomly wandering the city streets with a good friend {and a spare pair of slippers} in tow. Happy trails!

These words bring to mind many fond memories of days spent adventuring through Central Park and traversing the city streets from the upper west side all the way down to the Brooklyn Bridge and back again. It’s true what they say that you can literally spend an entire day in just a few square blocks and still not manage to see even a fraction of what that neighborhood has to offer. While I have resided within a mere hour’s drive of Manhattan for the entirety of my life, I am ashamed to say there are countless landmarks and tourist attractions I have yet to take the opportunity to appreciate. In recent years, I have traversed miles of city blocks on foot with one particularly adventurous friend for various shenanigans, some of which

Building Blocks Seaford Manor Elementary School students are channeling their inner creativity and getting a behind-thescenes look at video game creation with Bloxels. It is one of the newest tools in the school’s STEAM lab, which provides exploration of science, technology, engineering, the arts and math. Children use the Bloxel boards to create their video games layouts, with small colored cubes representing different elements such as blue for water, green for terrain, red for hazards and yellow
for coins. After designing their game board, students snap a picture with an iPad camera, and it converts it to a graphic in the Bloxel app. They can also use the Bloxel cubes to create their characters. “It’s very intricate,” said teacher Samantha Simon. “There are so many layers to creating a video game and the students really have to think about the placement of their blocks. This is all about them figuring it out.” Ms. Simon explained that one of the biggest challenges for the students is to design a game that
isn’t too challenging. Just like any video game made by professionals, it must be winnable. Bloxels gives students a basic introduction to computer programming and coding through a relatable activity. It also provides an understanding of the thought and design process used by software engineers. Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families. This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area. In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost. To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team. Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community. On Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th, they are hosting a team in the Long Island Marathon at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. Saturday will be a 5K and Sunday will be a 10K. They are looking for people to join their Friends of Karen team and to
