Buddy 2.0 By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Time for Buddy: The Sequel. As some of my more loyal readers may recall, I recently adopted my very own Betta fish, Buddy. He’s currently one and a half months old in time-spent-in-myfishbowl years, which has already surpassed the lifespan of most of my previous goldfish, surely a good sign. Like most fishy friends, it seems Buddy’s main mission is to eat. Constantly. Every time he catches a glimpse of me, here he comes, face pressed up against the glass, flippers “wagging”
expectantly. And then there’s the chewing. The adorable motion he makes when consuming his special Betta flakes is nothing short of precious. Who knew fish had teeth! Aside from his daily meal, Buddy seems content to swim endless laps around his prized plant decoration, occasionally knocking it from the gravel in his mad exuberance. Once exhausted, he generally settles under one of the branches for a little floating shut-eye – with eyes wide open of course. That usually only lasts until the instant he spies me, as even the slightest
prospect of food ends any siesta. Sure, he may not be as entertaining as a puppy or kitten or some other furry critter, but Buddy provides his own unique level of amusement from beyond the bowl. I think he’s adjusted quite well to life as a member of my household. Of course, that may be said for anyone who feeds him but… I still say Buddy and I have developed a special bond. Here’s hoping for many more milestones celebrated with my new fishy friend – and many more meals consumed together!

Classes Enhanced Seaford Middle School sixth graders are experiencing a more enriching General Music class as they learn basic music concepts and keyboarding on the newest generation of smart keyboards by Yamaha. The new keyboards replaced an old system that served the school for 17 years. The upgraded system is linked to a MacBook computer to run the software and provide teacher control, according to Matthew Fields, Seaford Middle School music teacher who secured the system at a reduced rate
for the district. “There is an iPad Mini that acts as a remote for the system and students can work independently or team up for activities and projects. Tests can also be taken right through the keyboards, which can be ‘split’ to accommodate two students,” he said. Music educators Charlotte Loake and Amanda Collins, who teach the course, received training on the new system before the keyboards were introduced this school year. “While the curriculum has been the same for the last several years,
the keyboards make experiencing music easier,” Loake said. “The students not only clap and sing, but, now they are able to play and create music and experience it in a very different way because the system is so interactive. The students love exploring all the sounds. We are now able to use all that the system has to offer, including playing along with recorded accompaniments, compose melodies and play them, and take tests using the system.”

CLASSES ENHANCED - Seaford Middle School sixth graders enjoy a more interactive experience in General Music classes with new smart keyboards.
Hundreds of Seaford High School students celebrated the food, culture and history of countries around the world by participating in National Foreign Language Week. The event featured the theme, “Learn a foreign language, gain a new perspective” and showcased Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese, Chinese, Arabic, Polish,
and German. With “passports” in hand, students completed a host of cultural activities ranging from United Nations trivia to a FIFA soccer tournament using the Wii gaming system, and were given a stamp on their passport once they finished a task correctly and proceeded to” travel” to a different country. In a culminating
event, students enjoyed a scavenger hunt and feasted on a smorgasbord of culinary delights, which were supplied by students and staff. The event was coordinated by Spanish teacher Patricia Foley and French teacher Jenna Lubicich, with the support of the entire Foreign Language Department.
RAINGUTTER REGATTA - Seaford’s Pack 239 held its annual Raingutter Regatta recently. The boys all made their boats at den meetings using kits purchased at the scout shop. They got to blow their boats along the gutters to the finish line. Webelos FOREIGN LANGUAGE WEEK - Seaford High Schoosl students match capitals to Scout Hunter won the event, with Wolf Scout Vincent coming in second. The boys all countries, one of the activities conducted during Foreign Language Week. had a blast rooting each other on.

Bike Locker Lottery Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray, Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney, Councilman Gary Hudes and Town Clerk Nasrin Ahmad are inviting local residents to enter the town’s annual “planet-friendly” bike locker lottery. The town is currently collecting entry forms, which will be used to select eight lucky winners who will each have a one-year use of a bike locker at the Bellmore train station. The town will hold a lottery drawing on Earth Day (April 22nd, 2015) at the Bellmore train station to randomly select the eight winners. Residents interested in the bike lockers should call the Office of the Town Clerk at 516.812.3024 to obtain an entry form (only one lottery ticket per household will be accepted). Residents must return the completed forms by Friday, April 17th

Each of the bike lockers is 4 feet tall, 6 feet long and 3 ¼ feet wide, all conveniently located on the north side of the tracks at the Bellmore train station. Each locker easily fits a standard bicycle, protecting it from damage, theft and bad weather. The town requires a $40 key deposit, which is refunded at the end of the one-year lease.
