hen Seaford High School senior Kelly Wolfson traveled to Guayaquil, Ecuador to assist deformed or injured people with the medical help they needed to change their lives, her life changed too. Kelly, along with her pediatrician and a group of 60 volunteers from teenagers on up, went on a medical mission through Blanca’s House, a non-profit organization that brings volunteers to impoverished areas.

555 By: Jamie Lynn Ryan 555 columns, 556 with this one. Ten years, soon to be eleven. Such are the minimilestones of my journalistic career here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Throw in a dozen or so “In Season” columns from our South Bay’s Seasons™ Magazine, and you have quite the collection of musings on life from me (with the occasional contribution from Buddy the Betta) over the last decade or so of my life. Impressive? Sure, if you enjoy what I have to say. Voluminous? Without a doubt. I have often considered the prospect of sifting through these past essays and compiling some sort of anthology – the highlights, the
lowlights, a snapshot of those topics that seemed worthy of putting pen to paper, or finger to keyboard, as the case may be. Quite the undertaking, and perhaps only for my own self-satisfaction, but a worthy effort nonetheless. Maybe throw in a few photographs to accent the project… weave in a bit of narrative to segue from one chapter to the next… Upon briefly scanning through some of the titles, I see a selection of heartfelt profiles of friends and family members who have left an imprint on my life, a few humorous “rants about nothing” on those dayto-day occurrences that seem to plague us all, a fair share of seasonal and holidaythemed edit, a handful of monumentally exciting
events (I got to interview Don Mattingly??) and… well, a host of columns that can only be categorized as “other,” those musings that delve into the philosophical, my own analysis of life as we know it. A bit uneven? Surely. Representative of my frame of mind at any given moment during the course of the last 10-going-on-11 years? Absolutely. And isn’t that what it’s all about? The opportunity to capture a moment in time, by any means, and transmit it to the public, through any medium, is a priceless one. How lucky I am to have had the chance to do so. 555 times. When Seaford High School senior Kelly Wolfson traveled to Guayaquil, Ecuador to assist deformed or injured people with the medical help they needed to change their lives, her life changed too. Kelly, along with her pediatrician and a group of 60 volunteers from teenagers on up, went on a medical mission through Blanca’s House of Huntington Station, a non-profit organization that brings volunteers to impoverished areas of Latin America to provide free medical care. “It was a completely eyeopening experience,” Kelly said. “Many people seeking medical care have cleft palates, electrical burns, cataracts and they are shunned in their culture. To be able to help them and to see the joy in their faces after they are treated is something I will never forget.” Kelly’s experience ranged from witnessing surgeries, monitoring patients in post-op, visiting

It’s great for anyone who is looking for experience in the medical field.” Kelly, who studies three languages - French, Spanish and American Sign Language - went for the experience of helping others in another culture. She hopes to pursue an international business career in the fashion industry. “I gained an appreciation for things outside my own culture and made connections with other student volunteers from other high schools on Long Island,” she said. Returning with a fresh
outlook on life, Kelly inspired her classmates Thomas Herman and Sarah Sass, Foreign Language Chairperson Dr. Sonia Zervakos and French teacher Jenna Lubicich, and Sarah’s mother Joan Sass, to go on a mission as well. They, too, returned with a desire to inspire others to volunteer. Dr. Zervakos, who mainly worked as a translator, said she plans to promote the opportunity to seniors who are 18 years of age, in particular. Those younger than 18 are required to have a guardian attend with them. Each medical mission focuses on a different medical issue. Medical Mission new perspective on life,” Thomas and Sarah agreed. “When working with people with eye problems, it was amazing to see how they reacted when they were finally able to see 20/20, but also sad when we didn’t have the right glasses to accommodate everyone,” they said. Yet Lillian Julien rose above the loss of her daughter Michelle in 1996 to found an organization whose purpose is to support other families living in similar circumstances. Shortly after Michelle’s death, Lillian’s daughter came to her in a dream letting her know she was okay but persuading her with the words, “you need to help each other.” Michelle’s message became Lillian’s mission—to create a healing center where parents and siblings could come together for emotional support and a variety of healing modalities. But Lillian didn’t stop with a vision; she turned vision into reality. She first created a spiritual center within her temple, which later became COPE. Recognized as a 501(c)(3) organization in 1999, COPE has grown from a select group of families meeting in each other’s homes to a support network of over 1,000 families gathering and healing in generously donated space as well as a dedicated COPE House in Eisenhower Park. COPE helps bereaved parents, adult siblings and children heal after devastating losses through professionally-facilitated bereavement support groups; alternative healing therapies (like yoga, Reiki, Tai Chi, meditation, art and music therapy, and writing and spirituality workshops); professional workshops for mental health professionals,
schools, clergy and funeral homes; a grief hotline; and Camp Erin® NYC, a bereavement camp for children ages 6-17 dealing with the loss of someone close to them, including concurrent parent camp. Lilly works actively on a daily basis to not only provide support to the COPE families who turn to her for that purpose, but also to guide and spread the word about COPE and its mission and to spearhead fundraising efforts. Lilly continues to be the driving force behind COPE, serving as board president, chief fundraiser and even facilitator of the organization’s art/creative expression workshops. She is also the author of GriefQuest, a workbook for grieving parents, and speaks at conferences across the country. In 2008, Lillian was inducted into the Long Island Volunteer Hall of Fame under the auspices of the Long Island Volunteer Center, and in 2014, she accepted the Roger E. Joseph prize from Hebrew Union College for her work with Camp Erin NYC. Previous recipients include Victor Kugler, who sheltered Anne Frank’s family, Rosa Parks and Daniel Pearl. “Lilly’s work has a definite social impact,” said Karen Flyer, COPE’s Executive Director. “Families who are able to heal from their profound grief are able to give back to their families, workplaces and society and mentor other families living with loss. Lillian’s innovative model for COPE empowers families who initially come for support to eventually become volunteers and stewards for the organization. The next level of healing is helping, and Lilly has both achieved that for herself, and inspired others within COPE to do the same.”
Finalists were chosen by Long Island business professionals during preliminary judging. Members of the Awards’ Distinguished Judging Panel selected the Imagine Awards winners from among the Finalists during final judging. “Being named a Finalist in The Long Island Imagine Awards is an important achievement,” said Ken Cerini, Founder of the Long Island Imagine Awards. “It means that independent

The artistic talent of 24 students from the Seaford School District was on display at the Art Supervisors Association’s 12th Annual Nassau AllCounty Art Exhibition at Farmingdale State College, March 20th. The free exhibit honored the talents of nearly 1200 young artists in kindergarten through twelfth grade who have demonstrated excellence in a wide variety of twodimensional visual art forms, including drawing, painting, printmaking, computer graphics and photography. All of the pieces were produced
in alignment with the New York State Learning Standards for Visual Arts. The Seaford students featured in the exhibit were: Harbor Elementary School students Molly Donner, grade 3; Morgan Wagner, grade 4 and Hailey O’Hagan, grade 5; Manor Elementary School students Anthony Mitarotonda, grade 2; Robert Grzelaczyk, grade 3 and Isabella Buran, grade 4; Seaford Middle School sixth-graders Anna Bertram and Chloe DeVito; seventh-graders Emma Ettinger, Ashely Coons, Gabrielle D’Avella and Katherine Scheuermann,
and Seaford High School freshmen Isabella Torelli and Angelina Uzsoras, sophomores Taylor Stone and Kendall Lowinger, juniors Taylor Yarmie and Andrew Blaurock, and seniors Sophia Shakalis, Eryn Suchara, Elise Weber, Alison Coggins, Natalie Falco and Alaina Schwartz. In addition to the exhibit, Eryn Suchara was one of nearly 50 graduating seniors who were awarded scholarships. She received her award at the invitationonly Scholarship Awards Ceremony before the exhibit opened.

The Art League of Long Island’s juried exhibition “Motion in Art and Art in Motion” challenged artists to submit their artistic interpretations of motion in 2-D or 3-D mediums. Exhibition Juror Marina Press selected 60 works out of 400 submissions from artists residing in Nassau, Suffolk, Brooklyn, and Queens who responded to the challenge. The exhibit is on view in the Art League’s Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery March 28th through April 24th, 2016. Marina Press is Associate Director of the Bernarducci Meisel Gallery, NYC. Born in Kiev, Ukraine, Ms. Press received her BA in Art History from Pace
University and is currently an MA Candidate in Art History and Museum Studies at CUNY.
