eaford’s Troop 239 visited Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, recently. The boys didn’t let a little snow and ice stop them, hiking all over the Valley Forge Encampment. Along the way, they saw authentic cannons, replicas of housing for the troops, the National Memorial Arch and the Washington Memorial Chapel. They also toured Washington’s Headquarters. It was quite an educational trip!

The Aquatics Division of Hempstead Town is offering a unique screening program for certified and non-certified lifeguard candidates at least 16 years of age. Interviews for candidates will be held at the Echo Park Pool on Nassau Boulevard in West Hempstead, every Saturday from May 16th to May 30th from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Participants are asked to bring all of their certification cards to the interview as well as a bathing suit, goggles and towel. Each lifeguard must

swim 200 yards under 3 minutes and 45 seconds to qualify for the interview. Applicants who wish to apply, but are not certified, can enroll in lifeguard training courses offered by the American Red Cross. FUN FIELD TRIP - Seaford’s Troop 239 visited Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, over a recent weekend. The boys didn’t let a little snow and ice stop them, hiking all over the Valley Forge Encampment. Along the way, they saw authentic cannons, replicas of housing for the troops, the National Memorial Arch and the Washington Memorial Chapel. They also toured Washington’s Headquarters. It was quite an educational trip, with a glimpse of life as part of Washington’s Continental Army in the Revolutionary War.

Seaford student Jack Myhill joined his peers from the Nassau BOCES Doshi STEM Institute recently to present his findings in a major study aimed at reducing the long-term environmental and biological impacts of pollution. The teen scientists have been analyzing heavy metals in the local environment to determine their effect on living organisms such as plants, oysters and insects.

Students prepared posters representing the results of their research and presented them to an audience of parents and administrators from their home districts, as well as Nassau BOCES board members. Audience members reviewed the young scientists’ work and asked several probing questions about their findings. The presentation was essential to the learning

The artistic talent of 24 students from the Seaford School District was on display at the Art Supervisors Association’s 11th Annual Nassau AllCounty Art Exhibition at Adelphi University, March 15th. The free exhibit honored the talents of nearly 1200 young artists in kindergarten through twelfth grade who have demonstrated excellence in a wide variety of twodimensional visual art forms, including drawing, painting, printmaking, computer graphics and

process. Not only did students strictly follow the scientific method, they discovered the value of communication in science. They even worked with a Shakespearean instructor from the Long Island High School for the Arts to hone their presentation skills. “This research has given our students a new perspective of the world around them and deepened their understanding of how humans are affecting the environment,” said Instructor Jennifer Galasso. “The presentation piece gave them an opportunity to reflect on the impact of their work and to present the results in a meaningful way. Communication is essential in the scientific community, so this experience is an invaluable one.” “Parents and educators alike from our partner districts were impressed by the poise and confidence of our students,” Principal Dr. AJ Hepworth said of the poster presentations. “They possess a fundamental understanding of the research they are conducting, which is a direct result of their instruction.”

Parkinson Awareness Julie Garofalo, R.N., Coordinator for the APDA Information & Referral Center located at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown. “There has been extensive research within the past 10 years, leading to more medications and surgical treatments to help reduce the symptoms of Parkinson disease, but, there is still no cure. More research is needed,” she said. Parkinson Disease is a progressive disorder of the brain caused by a lack of dopamine, with symptoms that can include a decrease in spontaneous movement, difficulty walking, postural instability, ridgidity and

tremors. While the disease typically affects men and women over 60 years old, it is increasingly affecting people in their 20’s through 50’s. There are approximately 1.5 million Americans who are living with Parkinson Disease. April 11th marks the birthday of Dr. James Parkinson, who first recognized the disease now named for him. The Long Island Pet Expo that was held from March 6th through March 8th at the Suffolk Community College in Brentwood, had a record-breaking number of attendees and pets adopted this year. The 6th annual event had well over 14,000 attendees in the 2.5-day expo. Over 70 pets adopted, the most at any of their shows in the tri-state, from local rescue groups that were at the expo. Over 600 owned dogs came with their owners to enjoy the pet friendly event over the weekend.

“We were very pleased with the number of adoptions at the expo, especially learning that a few senior dogs were adopted including a 10year old dog. That makes me very happy!” said Karen Garetano co-owner of Family Pet Shows who host the show. “Even though we have been hosting pet shows for 25 years, this 6th show at Suffolk Community College in Brentwood was a great show for us. People came from all over the island and from Queens, New York

City and Brooklyn. It was wonderful to have so many dog owners bring their dogs with them to enjoy the show too. Our vendors were very happy with the turnout and there were a lot of smiling faces, from the children to the adults and even their pets who attended.” Next year’s show is scheduled for Friday through Sunday: March 4th, 5th and 6th, 2016.
