Postscript By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I want to begin by expressing my sincere appreciation to all those readers who took the time to reach out in the last week to express condolences on the passing of my “Pal,” to relate to the sense of loss, to the closeness felt… but, mostly, to comment on how fortunate I was to share such a special bond with my grandfather and develop so many wonderful memories through the years. It is with that sentiment that I choose to pick up this week’s column. Rather than dwell in the sadness, I choose to reflect with a smile – on the love, the laughter, the photo albums, the video footage, the small possessions that embody much larger stories –

all the components that make pile of “unattributed” wisdom up a life well-lived. we all love to call upon from time to time. No matter the Family is precious. We source, the message is clear. know this, of course; but And so, we smile. We reflect. Some countries favor a Cuckoo or Fox to spread joy; kids do love this suspension be it girl or boy. Eggs represents the symbol of fertility and new life. Hares and rabbits show to multiply a real strong drive. To assist in the festivities, the Easter bunny was born, kept busy with hiding fancy eggs in pastures of corn.

The Seaford Lions Club is offering three $1,500 scholarships to Seaford residents who will be graduating from high school in June. All Seaford seniors who expect to continue their education are encouraged to apply for the Seaford Lions Scholarships. Over the weekend, Venturing Crew 130 visited the Sterling Hill Mining Museum in Ogdensburg, NJ. Ninety one of the minerals found in this mine fluoresce. So, throughout the tour,

black light was shown on the rocks to show how the minerals there glow. Each Venturer was given a sample to take home. They also took advantage of some local geocaching along the way. The Crew camped in a

cabin at Camp Winnebago in nearby Rockaway, NJ. They also took a morning 2-1/2 mile hike around the camp’s Durham Pond. Who would have thought that something so cool was so close to home?

Passport Around the World Hundreds of Seaford High School students “traveled” around the world without leaving their school in celebration of National Foreign Language Week. With a “passport” in hand, they moved to different classrooms to participate in a host of activities that celebrated the language, culture and history of countries across the globe. Students took part in cultural dancing, a FIFA soccer tournament using a video gaming system, United Nations Trivia, and other tasks that tested their knowledge, such as matching capitals to countries or naming famous people from

different countries. Once students completed each activity, their “passports” were stamped. In its second year, the event featured the theme, “Language Enriches Your Mind,” which was advertised with posters hung around the school. As a culminating event, students enjoyed a scavenger hunt and feasted on a huge smorgasbord of international culinary delights, which were supplied by students and staff. The event was coordinated by Spanish teacher Patricia Foley and French teacher Jenna Lubicich, with the support of the entire Foreign Language Department.

“Foreign Language Week not only celebrates languages around the world, it reinforces the skills our students learn in the classroom in a fun and interactive way,” agreed Foley and Lubicich. “This year, American Sign Language (ASL) was added to the curriculum and we look forward to incorporating ASL activities in next year’s event.” Kind Words Kind words do not cost much.
