As Greece prepares to observe 196 years of independence later this month, the Town of Hempstead today hosted its first ever Greek American Heritage Ceremony. Supervisor Anthony J. Santino welcomed the community to Town Hall for a celebration that featured traditional dances, a keynote speaker and the presentation of six Greek American Heritage Awards. “Hempstead Town is near the epicenter of the New York Metropolitan area, which is home to the largest population of Americans with Greek ancestry,” Santino said. “While Greece celebrates its Independence Day on March 25th, we were proud to celebrate

The patterns have been broken up into 9 sections, with one section’s instructions available at each store. Visit all the stores to collect the whole patterns! After the crawl, the patterns will be available on the crawl website as well as on Ravelry. We hope that yarn crafters of all backgrounds will explore Long Island’s rich fiber community during the yarn crawl weekend and make connections with fellow crafters. National Walking Day On April 5th, countless numbers of Long Islanders will take a step towards being Healthy For Good and walk to commemorate the American Heart Association’s National Walking Day. The Healthy For Good movement is designed to inspire all Americans to live healthier lives and create lasting change. It focuses on the simple

idea that making small changes today can create a difference for generations to come. So join the movement and move more with us throughout the month of April! Studies have suggested that moderate physical activity has many proven benefits for overall health, such as lowering blood pressure, increasing HDL, or “good”, cholesterol

and controlling weight. All these changes help to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke, the nation’s No. 1 and No. 5 killers. The American Heart Association will kick off the month-long campaign on National Walking Day, April 5th, to encourage people to move more by increasing their physical activity. The campaign is

broken down into weekly themes. Week one focuses on walking and the basic tools you need to get started. Walking is one of the safest, least expensive, and most sustainable forms of exercise. Weeks two and three focus on recreational sports and outdoor activities the whole family can do together, and week four focuses on mindful movement and reducing

stress by doing activities such as yoga, Pilates and tai chi. The American Heart Association recommends that adults participate in at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity aerobic activity or a combination of both each week. Kids should get at least 60 minutes of physical activity

Life, as we know it, doesn’t always go according to plan. Sometimes, the most carefully orchestrated days can go awry in the blink of an eye, through no fault of our own. How we react, and recover – or don’t, as the case may be – says a lot about our character, or lack thereof. The fact is, more days than not will fall into this category. Seldom do schedules run like clockwork; rare are there uninterrupted intervals of peace and tranquility. Life doesn’t stop for anyone, and you had best hang on for the ride. Speaking of rides, and unexpected detours if you will, I recently took my car – my six-year old “Celeste” – for her annual checkup at the dealership. Over three hours, and nearly $500, later, I left with new rear brakes, an oil change, assorted minor

maintenance and a clean bill of health – for now. One day later, a co-worker said, “Didn’t you just get your car serviced?” Um…yeah? “Brake light is out.” And here I was so excited to no longer have a monthly car payment to contend with. Sigh. Take a deep breath; it calms the mind… so they say. On that note, I am happy to report to many inquiring readers that I have found a new yoga studio at which to continue my practice; new locale, anyway – same teacher, same familiar faces, same positive vibes. It’s amazing what those 75 minutes can do for the soul, even after the most pressing of days. There is something truly healing about those inhales and exhales, even while the mind races through its endless loop of thoughts. We could all benefit from

slowing down the pace a bit, mentally and physically. What has rushing ever accomplished that more careful consideration and contemplation couldn’t have improved upon? Even my baby betta, Spud, seems to have realized this, as he purposefully swims to and fro in his tiny bowl, stopping every so often – about once every five minutes, on average – to carefully inspect the thermometer I recently installed. Maybe he can read? Even his eating habits are methodical, as he carefully chooses each crumb, gobbling them up in – I kid you not – size order. And here I thought I was a bit OCD. Only three months after Hempstead Town Supervisor Anthony J. Santino announced the launch of a senior suicide hotline, in tandem with the Long Island Crisis Center (LICC), over two hundred seniors have reached out for help. The 24/7 helpline assists mature residents who are in crisis. Experts indicate that the holidays and winter months can be a particularly difficult time for senior citizens who are battling depression. The LICC logged 242 calls from December 1st, 2016 through March 1st, 2017. The LICC also began a series of Senior Crisis Intervention seminars at Town of Hempstead senior centers that deal with grief, loneliness and depression. “The fact that over two hundred seniors reached out for help proves the need for this crucial service,” stated Santino. “The goal is to prevent senior suicide, combat depression and help people who are in crisis. After only three months, I am pleased to say we are making a difference.”

“Most of the calls have dealt with family relationships, financial issues, resources for getting help in various aspects of their lives, and the feelings of isolation and loneliness, especially now in the winter months,” said Linda Leonard, Executive Director of LICC. “It was also remarkable to see that even with their own problems, many of our senior citizens called because they were concerned about others – from their adult children with addiction crises to relatives voicing suicidal thoughts. Today’s senior population deserves our care and attention – we thank Supervisor Santino for taking a leadership role in this initiative.” Counselors say the holiday season can be particularly difficult for seniors. Issues such as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), also known as the “Holiday Blues,” can manifest themselves through depressive symptoms. The Senior Connection Helpline is a 24/7 service that will give seniors in

crisis the critical help they deserve. The helpline is staffed with highly trained professionals and exceptional volunteers. The LICC has over 45 years of suicide prevention experience and their staff members utilize the “Active Listening Skills” method to speak with the troubled callers. Thanks to a grant from the Town of Hempstead’s Planning and Economic Development Department, the service is available completely free of charge. The LICC began visiting each of Hempstead Town’s 16 senior centers to spread the word of the helpline and their other services. BLUE AND GOLD - The Massapequa Cub Scouts Pack 776 hosted their annual Blue and Gold Banquet on March 5th at the Knights of Columbus Memorare in Seaford. This event is the highlight of the year bringing together families for dinner and fun in celebration of the birthday of Cub Scouting. In addition to the festivities, scouting achievements were recognized. Many of the cub scouts crossed over into Boy Scouts and all received the Arrow of Light Award. To showcase their knowledge, students, dressed in patriotic red, white and blue, sang “Fifty

After their performance, the youngsters eagerly led their parents to where their state research projects were displayed. All are welcome and encouraged to attend, including families with children. “Joining the volunteer fire service has been the most rewarding experience of my life, and I do not believe I am alone in saying that,” said FASNY President Ken Pienkowski. “Hundreds of

volunteer fire departments across New York will be participating in RecruitNY, and we invite all New Yorkers to visit with their local firehouses. Visitors may be surprised to find their very own neighbors and friends already serving in the fire department, and just may be inspired to join them in protecting the community.” The volunteer fire service is an integral part of both life and the economy in New York State. In 2016, FASNY released an economic impact report, which quantifies the value of the volunteer fire

service and its associated tax savings throughout the state. The report concluded that the annual cost of a replacement, all-paid fire service would be $3.87 billion. Furthermore, property taxes in New York State would rise by an estimated average of 26.5%. These figures do not factor in the costs of acquiring the necessary facilities and equipment needed to accommodate a paid fire service. The volunteer fire service, and efforts like RecruitNY, make the State not only safer, but also more affordable.

Established in 2011, RecruitNY is a joint undertaking by the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY), the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs (NYSAFC), Association of Fire Districts of New York State, Volunteer Fire Police Association of the State of New York, and County Fire Coordinators Association of the State of New York. Recruit NY Volunteers Needed More than 200 fire departments across New York State have already signed up for the seventh annual RecruitNY weekend, a major initiative of the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY). ADVISORY BOARD MEETS - Members of the Nassau BOCES Adult Education Industry Advisory Board came together for their first meeting recently. About 25 representatives from a variety of businesses including Northwell Health, Sodexo, Spectronics, Formed Plastics and Plumbers Union 200 are among the volunteers who came together.
