Phone Scam Attempts On The Rise With a recent uptick in the number of reported phone scam attempts, PSEG Long Island again urges residents and business owners to make themselves aware of the tactics scammers use to try to steal their money. Phone scammers have become more prolific and sophisticated in recent years. In many cases, the scammers can modify their caller ID to read “PSEG
Long Island.” More than 6,600 calls were reported to PSEG Long Island in 2019, up from 4,088 scam calls reported in 2018. While recent weeks have seen an increase in the number of scam calls, PSEG Long Island’s awareness campaigns appear to have made customers more alert. In 2015, 8.2% of the total number of reported calls resulted in customers losing their money. Since

Tips When Planting Shade Trees
Beautiful landscaping can add instant curb appeal to a property. But beauty isn’t the only thing that makes idyllic landscaping attractive to homeowners. Some landscaping features, such as shade trees, save homeowners money while adding aesthetic appeal. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that shading is the most cost-effective way to reduce solar heat gain in a home. Shading also cuts air conditioning costs, which tend to be expensive in areas with warm, humid climates. In fact, the DOE notes that well-planned landscapes can reduce unshaded homes’ air conditioning costs by anywhere from 15 to 50 percent. When planting shade trees, one of the first decisions homeowners will need to make is which type of tree, deciduous or evergreen, they want to plant. Deciduous trees are those that seasonally shed their leaves, while evergreens are trees that keep their leaves throughout the year. Deciduous trees can help keep homes cool in the summer by blocking sun, and those same trees can be beneficial in winter after they shed their leaves by letting the sun in and keeping homes warm.

If an outstanding performance was the goal, third graders at Seaford Harbor Elementary School certainly achieved it. This year’s production of “GOAL! The Beautiful Game of Football… er… Soccer” featured approximately 50 students who put on three performances for their peers and parents on March 9 and 10.
The soccer-themed show featured several musical numbers. Students rehearsed for several months afterschool under the direction of music teacher Pamela Brinkman. She explained that the third grade show is an annual tradition at Harbor, and also noted the help of the fifth grade stage hands. The musicians were clad

The caller informs you that you require a new meter and demands a deposit before the installation can occur. You’re given a phone number to call back that, when called, may sound similar to PSEG Long Island’s automated call system. PSEG Long Island will never ask for a pre-paid card, wire transfer or bitcoin. Scammers ask for them because they are untraceable. What to do Hang up. Do not provide any personal or account information. Call PSEG Long Island at 1-800-490-0025. Never call any number the scammer gives you. What PSEG Long Island will and won’t discuss over the phone A genuine PSEG Long Island representative will ask to speak to the Customer of Record. If that person is available, the representative will explain why they are calling and provide the account name, address
and current balance. If the Customer of Record is not available, the PSEG Long Island representative will not discuss the account at all and ask that a message be left for the Customer of Record to call 1-800-4900025. PSEG Long Island also cautions customers to beware of scam emails that appear to be bills from the utility. These emails request personal information that could lead to identity theft. PSEG Long Island does not ask customers to provide personal information online without first logging into the My Account section of www.psegliny.com. Seaford Middle School seventh graders Nadia Matos and Rachel Schnaier won first place in the 22nd annual Science Fair Competition, hosted by the Nassau Community College Honors Program, on March 7. They were recognized for their project, “The Effect of Climate Change on Sea Life.” Nadia and Rachel qualified
them for the regional competition based on their performance at the Seaford Middle School science fair in February. For their project, they studied the effect of chemicals in water bodies by putting seashells into both water and vinegar. They noticed that the vinegar caused some of the shells to disintegrate. Seaford eighth graders
Justin Cettina and Ryan D’Orio also attended the Nassau Community College Science Fair Competition, presenting their project, “What’s In Your Water?” They analyzed water from several different sources including their home faucets, the middle school water fountain, rain, a local pond, filtered water and bottled water.

As coronavirus continues to impact Long Islanders, growing health concerns along with the constant barrage of news is raising people’s anxiety. Catholic Health Services’s (CHS) mental health professionals offer ways we can reduce our stress during this time of uncertainty. This includes eating healthy, exercise, adequate sleep, virtually connecting with friends and family and reducing exposure to news and social media. “The constant flow of information related to coronavirus can become overwhelming,” said Catholic Health Services Chairman of Behavioral Health Ronald Brenner, MD. “It’s important to take a break and step away from media reports and the constant scrolling through social channels.” Anxiety is a normal response to a stressful situation and can inspire adaptive behavior in many situations. However, when facing mounting uncertainty, the brain can go into an anxiety spiral and cause atypical reactions. Knowing the body’s physical reactions to the different types of anxiety is important. Typical stress reactions can include temporary difficulty concentrating, irritability, fatigue, stomachache and difficulty sleeping. Atypical
