The Town of Hempstead’s Annual “Remembrance Day Program” will feature the inspiring story of Gloria Glantz, an innocent child living with family in Wegrow, Poland during the Nazi occupation. Gloria escaped the horror and atrocity of the Holocaust era when her mother took her from their imperiled hometown to live with friends in a neighboring village. Ms. Glantz survived certain death to grow up and enjoy a remarkable life complete with careers as a renowned educator and a Holocaust historian. The Remembrance Day Program will be held on Thursday evening, April 2nd at 7 p.m. in the Clubhouse of Merrick Road Park Golf Course on Clubhouse Road in Merrick. The event is presented free of charge and tickets are not required. Gloria Glantz’s story offers an enlightening look at a dark period of world history highlighted by her miraculous and moving upbringing in a loving Christian family. Spring has arrived. Sort of. As I write this column, snow is accumulating at quite a pace, ushering in the start of the new season in much the same manner as the last one began. I suppose it’s fitting that Long Island should be blanketed by white once more before finally (hopefully) giving way to the first blossoms. It’s funny, no matter how many seasons we are fortunate to enjoy here in the northeast, there are always those detractors who seem dissatisfied with the variety of weather. The seasons are too long, too hot, too cold, whatever. Imagine if we all lived in an area of extreme

fluctuations, from 100º days to 8 feet of snow at a clip. I think I speak for everyone when I say, no thank you. Of the four seasons, I would have to say spring is my favorite. It’s the perfect combination of sun and flowers and that lovely light breeze that keeps everything just right. Summer is still right over the horizon, winter is firmly in the rearview mirror and nature is in full flourishing mode. What more could you ask for? Well, other than a few more feet of snow to play in – but I assume even the biggest fans of winter outdoor activities have probably had their fill by now. Plus, for those of us interested in the “spring cleaning” aspect of things, it’s

the ideal time to reorganize – closets, junk drawers, piles of paperwork, life as a whole… to take stock and give everything a good, old-fashioned refresh. It’s amazing the cobwebs you find when you take a moment to stop and take inventory, mentally and otherwise. So, to all, enjoy the season. All of them. Each one is only three months long, just enough to savor the nuances without becoming too encumbered by the flaws. Sure, April will most likely bring the usual array of showers; but remember, May, in all its glory, is just around the corner. Everyone has a preference. Regardless, we should all make a point of enjoying each and every day.

Ice Climbing Adventure

snowy cold winter, Crew 130 went ice climbing in Connecticut the weekend of March 6th-8th. The girls and boys were trained on the equipment and skills of ice climbing. Geared up with special boots, crampons, ropes and snowshoes they climbed

(FREE) announced that they have received a grant from the Office of Mental Health (OMH) for the development of a suicide prevention program aimed at supporting young adults between the ages of 15 and 25 who are at high risk for suicide. Through collaborations with youth agency staff and youth groups, the suicide prevention program will reach high risk subpopulations, such as youth aging out of foster care, youth with disabilities, GLBT youth and youth living in high risk communities on Long Island. In addition, the project will use a referral service to connect youth to mental health providers, thus increasing access to services. FREE will launch an anti-stigma

marketing campaign, an online support group to help youth in distress, a website, and publications of resources. The project aims to create a safe and supportive environment where youth and young adults watch out for each other and get help if needed. The website, freespli. org, includes a toll free number to call, 1.800.273.TALK (8255), if you have had thoughts of suicide or are thinking about suicide. Help is available, free of charge, 24/7. The website also includes a Suicide Prevention Resource Center for youth, friends and families and a list of websites to get help for crisis situations. FREE will partner with several well-respected youth organizations to implement the suicide prevention program. Partners include:

Adelante, Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk County, Inc. (EOC), Family Life Center (Wyandanch Youth Center), and Youth Enrichment Services, Inc. (YES). In our society, we clearly use ships to facilitate trade as well. Shipbuilding is still a very important part of our society today. One major invention of the Mesopotamians was alphabetic writing. The Phoenicians, by approximately 1500 B.C.E, created alphabetic writing. The Phoenician alphabet consisted of 22 consonants. Their system of writing was much more efficient than the earlier cuneiform writing because it was difficult to remember many different symbols. With the Phoenician alphabet, you could build words with letters, which made it much easier for the population to learn how to write. Many of the languages spoken today have Phoenician roots, including English.
