Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently participated in the Special Olympics New York Polar Plunge, held annually at TOBAY Beach to benefit this
great cause. Participants were also supported by Councilman Tom Hand and Councilwoman Laura Maier, who cheered on plungers as they ran into the icy waters at
TOBAY while following an extensive list of COVID safety protocols. The Supervisor was joined in the effort by Assemblyman Michael Durso.
Labriola Cautions Residents To Be On Lookout For Cold Stun Turtles
Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola reminds residents, there is an increased number of sea turtles stranded on north shore beaches due to a condition called cold stunning. “When water temperatures drop below approximately 50 degrees, sea turtles become lethargic and are unable to swim, as they are basically experiencing hypothermia,” said Councilman Labriola. “When this occurs, they can float up to the surface
and become vulnerable to boat strikes or wash ashore and become stranded, which can be fatal. If you see a turtle on the shoreline, please do not put it back into the water. Instead, cover the turtle with seaweed or call the New York Marine Rescue Center.” The Town of Oyster Bay, in partnership with the New York Marine Rescue Center, recently installed signage at north shore beaches to help educate the public about this condition. The signage
also provides guidelines on what to do and what not to do if you come upon a stranded turtle. Tips include: • Move the turtle above the high tide line • DO NOT put the turtle back in the water • Cover the turtle with seaweed or dry wrack • Mark the spot with a piece of beach debris or draw an arrow in the sand • Call the NY Marine Rescue Center Hotline at (631) 369-9829.

Seaford School Makes A Four-Figure Donation To Fight Cancer Loose change and some spare dollar bills added up to more than $1,000 at Seaford Middle School, which hosted its annual Pennies for Patients collection drive for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The drive was organized by the National Junior Honor Society, under the direction of adviser Sarah Frank. Honor society members visited classrooms each morning in February to collect donations, and they also took time out of their lunch periods to help count the money. When the final total came in, Seaford students and staff donated $1,056.54 to the worthy cause. Ms. Frank noted that the seventh grade alone donated about $800 and will receive a special prize for their generosity. National Junior Honor
Society members said the fundraiser is important because it helps provide treatment for children battling cancer and
advances the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s mission in finding a cure. “It makes me feel happy to know that a little kid
might have their day brightened by us because of the money we collected,” eighth grader Shannon McClernon said.

T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country and multiple wishes have being granted on Long Island recently! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. Recently, many Long Island residents had their wishes come true. Below is a story about Patricia, who recently had her wish granted. You could be next! Patricia Bachmore is a 75 year old resident of Amityville. She wished for new furniture and thanks to the Long Island chapter of this national nonprofit, her wish was granted! Patricia has fostered and socialized rescue kittens and cats for years. Understandably, that took a toll on her furniture. Although the furniture was old and falling apart, she could not afford to replace it on her own because of her limited income. In December of 2020, The Twilight Wish Foundation granted her with a new sofa and kitchen chairs, which she wished for. In addition to her work with rescue organizations, Patricia is part of the Amityville neighborhood watch program and also works with the Town
of Babylon’s 311 citizens complaint unit. She also assists other senior citizens in her mobile home park with grocery shopping and other errands. THANK YOU PATRICIA FOR ALL OF YOUR SELFLESS EFFORTS! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. Hempstead Town Announces $340K to Support Public Libraries Supervisor Don Clavin and the Hempstead Town Board have approved more than $340,000 in federal CARES funds for public libraries located throughout America’s largest township. Funds will be provided to the Lakeview Public Library, Island Park Public Library, East Meadow Public Library, Hempstead Public Library, Peninsula Public Library, Baldwin Public Library, Rockville Centre Public Library, Uniondale Public
Library, West Hempstead Public Library, Island Trees Library, Levittown Public Library, Elmont Public Library, Franklin Square Public Library, North Bellmore Public Library, Merrick Library, Seaford Public Library and Wantagh Public Library. “Our public libraries have worked tirelessly to continue serving the community over the past year, but the COVID-19 pandemic has taken a serious financial

The COVID-19 relief funds – totaling over $340,259 – will help libraries continue providing essential programs and services to the community, and help reimburse unbudgeted expenses incurred during the pandemic. Most libraries have continued to offer a full complement of services throughout the pandemic with COVID-19 safe measures implemented. Some of the pandemic measures include UVlighting to disinfect books and printed materials, protective plexiglass and personal protective equipment. “Libraries are important community resources that have been hit hard during the pandemic, and we are proud to provide
this grant funding to help them recover,” said Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby. Added Councilman Bruce Blakeman, “We are grateful for the opportunity to give back to local libraries that have provided so much to our community.” “No one could have anticipated the impact that COVID-19 would have on libraries and so many other aspects of our daily lives, and these relief funds will go a long way to helping them get back on their feet,” said Councilman Anthony D’Esposito.
