Manor Students Have A Good Feeling About Reading
Hundreds of studentdrawn emojis line the main hallway at Seaford Manor Elementary School, a reflection of this year’s Pick a Reading Partner theme, “Reading Gives You #AllTheFeels.” The literacy initiative, which runs from Feb. 28 through March 18, is presented in partnership with the PTA. The showcase of the 2022 PARP program is emoji book reviews, so students could get book recommendations from their peers. They reviewed a variety of books, which
were scattered around the emojis they drew on yellow paper plates. The young readers wrote a short summary, and what they enjoyed most and least in the books. From the main lobby to the back doors, the walls are filled with suggestions of books appropriate for readers from kindergarten through fifth grade. Connecting with the Seaford School District’s emotional intelligence program, this year’s PARP booklet includes a Catch #AllTheFeels mood meter.
Students can choose from emojis representing 16 different emotions to show how a book makes them feel. This year’s PARP program included a virtual visit with the Seaford Public library, buddy reading day and class parent virtual read alouds. It concludes with a virtual visit from author David Adler. Throughout the program, students are encouraged to read every day for at least 20 minutes with a partner.

After a few minutes, everyone got a different partner and they continued to switch throughout the period, so each student received constructive critiques from multiple classmates.

Ms. Flood explained that there are guidelines for effective research questions, and students were able to have meaningful discussions on whether their proposed questions met the criteria. Town Board Approves Departmental Consolidation And Reorganization Plan To improve operations and maximize the delivery of services, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the Town Board approved a departmental consolidation and reorganization plan that aims to achieve cost savings for taxpayers through efficiencies. Under the plan, four town departments are consolidated into two departments, and a new town Department of Sanitation is created along with other operational efficiencies. “We examined town operations and best practices with the goal of improving the delivery of services in a costconscious manner,” said Supervisor Saladino. “Furthering our commitment to protecting taxpayers, we are moving forward with a departmental consolidation and reorganization plan to bring about greater efficiencies with an eye towards saving money and bettering services for residents.” In an effort to repave a greater number of streets and better maintain roadways, the Town Board’s action results in the consolidation of the Highway Department into the Department of Public Works (DPW). The goal of this initiative is to build synergy between the Engineering Division of DPW and the men and women of Highway who perform maintenance. By rolling the Department of Highway into DPW, the Town will not have to hire a new Commissioner
for a department that no longer exists, thus providing for a savings down the line. Councilman Steve Labriola stated, “The Town Board has been focused on finding savings in every corner of our government. This departmental consolidation will allow us to achieve efficiencies, save taxpayers money and improve the delivery of services.” For more than a year, the Town has examined new ways to deal with sanitation, with the goal of creating a more efficient and streamlined process for both trash and recyclable waste. Accordingly, a standalone Department of Sanitation was also approved by the Town Board to streamline inter-related sanitation collection operations and recycling collection programs. It replaces the division of sanitation and recycling collection that was currently part of DPW. With an eye toward cost savings and best protecting Mother Earth, this department will have jurisdiction over the Solid Waste Complex and landfill, which has been capped and inactive for years but requires strict adherence to quality control standards and protocols set forth by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and both State and County health departments. Additionally, the Department of Economic Development was consolidated into the Department of Planning and Development.

Families across Long Island cannot wait for the All Kids Fair’s first in-person event since before Covid-19. The 11th annual All Kids Fair will be on Sunday, April 3, from 10-4:30, at Samanea New York Mall, formerly The Source Mall, at 1504 Old Country Road in Westbury. Since 2011, the All Kids Fair has been a fun day each April for kids and their families to spend time together and also learn about Long Island-based companies with services and products for them. There are many exciting reasons for families to attend this amazing event. Some of this year’s new additions are: • Four Video games, provided by Dave & Buster’s on “free play” all day • Soccer Demo Class, provided by Soccer Stars • Chorus Class and Piano Performance, provided by LJ Music Studios • Beanbag Toss for Prizes, provided by TherapyMyWay and Psychological Service LI • Bead Buddy Art Project, provided by Oasis Day Camp • Sewing and Fashion Design, provided by The Fashionable Stylista Additional activities and attractions include three bounce houses, a petting zoo, face painters, balloon artists, a photo booths, Boxercise non-contact exercises, speech screenings, a guinea pig to touch, Italian ice samples, child ID cards, and cotton candy, all included with admission.
