North Shore Land Alliance, a local land trust, is seeking high school students, retirees, educators, nature enthusiasts, youth groups and community-minded businesses to help protect and steward the beautiful areas in our communities. These areas safeguard our air and water supplies, provide wildlife habitat and create places for people of all ages to play, learn and connect with nature. The Land Alliance is very fortunate to work with more than 200 volunteers who contribute 1,000 hours of community service annually. That time, valued at approximately $30,000, provides support for land conservation projects and educational programs. Volunteers assist with a variety of efforts including trail restoration, invasive species management and plant and wildlife monitoring, just to name a few. Seeing the Signs a precious symbol that life does, in fact, go on. Fast forward to last week. I ran quickly to the store for a bunch of roses to bring to the cemetery, knowing that the impending “blizzard” and freezing temperatures would most likely destroy them in a matter of hours. As I headed back to the car, a sign for birdseed caught my eye. And then, it hit me. Suddenly, I heard chirping. Loud, incessant chirping. I turned around, searching for the source… and there it was, a single, solitary robin, sitting on the top of the pile. Some signs, you just don’t see coming.

I’m always looking for signs. Except when I’m not, which makes them all the more poignant and undeniable. Case in point, the one year anniversary of my grandfather’s passing recently came and went on March 13th, bringing with it the anticipated mix of sadness and reflection that these milestones tend to create. Back on that day, one year ago, shortly after learning the devastating news, I stared blankly out my sliding glass door at the tree directly in front of my apartment, only to be met

with the gaze of one solitary robin. Sitting. Staring. I must have stood at that door for a solid half hour, mesmerized by this tiny bird, alone in a barren tree, his eyes fixated on me. Was it a sign? Was it just a matter of ironic timing? Who knows… I chose to find solace in the serenity of the moment, comfort in the quiet. A month later, we discovered a nest of four perfect robin’s eggs at my grandparents’ house, the first of its kind in that backyard, ever. We marveled at how it seemed to literally drop out of the sky at a most opportune moment, manifesting out of thin air,

Two flyers on the team broke an ankle this season, and
there were two shoulder injuries. “You could see the pride, emotion and confidence on their faces...completely priceless,” Ferrari said, “and to me that matters more than any place they come in.” The team also competed for the fifth consecutive year in the National High School Cheerleading Championship at Walt Disney World, which is considered the most prestigious cheerleading championship in the country. During most years, the team has moved up markedly in the ranks, placing fifth in its division in the nation last year.

Kennedy High School in Bellmore; Rachel Jozwik of Wellington C. the competition known formerly as the Intel Science Talent Search Contest recognized the nation’s most talented high school scholars. This science talent search competition for high school students has been renamed the Regeneron Science Talent Search Contest. This year, 58 seniors from Long Island schools
were among 300 students nationwide who were named scholars in the 2017 Regeneron Science Talent Search. In New York State, 98 students were named scholars, and seven of those scholar students reside in the Town of Hempstead. Each scholar receives a $2,000 award and $2,000 for his or her school.

Greek Heritage Ceremony
SPECIAL SCOUT - Hempstead Town Clerk Nasrin Ahmad presented an official Town of Hempstead Certificate of Recognition to Ryan J. Dempsey of Boy Scout Troop 690 on the occasion of him becoming an Eagle Scout. The Eagle Scout Court of Honor was held at Saint William the Abbot Church in Seaford. Eagle Scout is the highest achievement or rank attainable in the Boy Scouting program of the Boy Scouts of America.
As Greece prepares to observe 196 years of independence later this month, the Town of Hempstead is getting ready to host its first ever Greek American Heritage Ceremony. Supervisor Anthony J. Santino invites the community to the celebration of Greek American culture on Wednesday, March 22nd, at 7 p.m. at Hempstead Town Hall’s Nathan L. H. Bennett Pavilion (One Washington Street, Hempstead). “Hempstead Town is near the epicenter of the New York Metropolitan area, which is home to the largest population of Americans with Greek ancestry,” Santino said. “While Greece celebrates its Independence Day on March 25th, we’re proud to celebrate the achievements
and contributions of Greek Americans in America’s largest township on March 22nd at Town Hall.” The exciting cultural program will feature traditional dances, a keynote speaker and the presentation of six Greek American heritage awards. This year’s honorees include: Nick Boultadakis, owner of the Sand Castle in Franklin Square; Harry Demiris, Jr. Esq., attorney and distinguished past president of the East Meadow Kiwanis Club; Father Nikiforos Fakinos of Saint Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church of Merrick; Despina Forakis, a math teacher at Roosevelt High School; Gus Potaris, owner of Pop’s Seafood Shack of Island Park and Chris Stefanakos, owner of Stefan’s Florist in
Lawrence. Fr. Fakinos is also the keynote speaker of the evening’s program. Entertainment will be provided by St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church. All attendees can enjoy free Greek specialties and refreshments, donated by the Empress Diner of East Meadow. “In recognition of Greek Heritage Month in March and the upcoming Greek Independence day, I encourage neighbors to join us for this free, fun event on March 22nd at Town Hall,” Santino said. “I look forward to celebrating Greek American culture and honoring six fine individuals from the Town of Hempstead with our first Greek American Heritage Awards.”
Nearly 140 incoming kindergartners and their parents became acclimated to the kindergarten program at Seaford Manor and Harbor elementary schools by participating in a Kindergarten Literacy Experience and a Kindergarten Specials Experience. The Literacy program consisted of an interactive read aloud, a reading
activity based on the read aloud book and an information session for parents that explained the kindergarten ELA curriculum and standards, as well as the importance of reinforcing those skills at home. The Specials program introduced them to library, physical education, music and art. “These experiences are opportunities for incoming
students and their parents to learn more about our elementary schools and the kindergarten curriculum, and for youngsters to get acquainted with the school so they feel more comfortable when they attend next year as fulltime students,” said John Striffolino, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction & Personnel.
