I Miss You Friend I am suddenly struck with a memory of an old friend who passed away in 2007 from Cystic Fibrosis. She took up residence at the forefront of my mind just as I had the thought, “Okay, time to write this week’s column.” I met Brenna in 1991 at a theatre arts summer camp in upstate New York. Five of us girls shared a dorm that summer, and one of my roommates was an Irish Catholic girl from New Hampshire, named Brenna. We were the same age and both loved acting and the arts, but culturally we were worlds apart. I, a Jewish girl from Long Island with olive skin and dark curly hair, was fascinated with her strawberry blonde pin straight hair, bright green eyes and rosy complexion. She also had a husky-yet-feminine voice (think vintage Kathleen Turner). Brenna was a true force of nature; the kind of person you never forget once she’s touched your life. Our friendship developed at summer camp but lasted for years afterwards. I made trips to visit her and her family in New Hampshire and she made a
couple of trips to New York City where we would go to places like FAO Schwartz, her favorite Irish pub and St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Brenna was born with Cystic Fibrosis (or CF, as it is known in the Cystic Fibrosis community), but she was so dynamically alive that I couldn’t conceive of her succumbing to her illness. She never let her disease define or diminish her. In fact, shortly after marrying at the age of twenty-five she wanted to have a baby. Brenna’s doctor warned her against it. I’ll never forget her recounting the story to me after she’d given birth to her son, Harrison. “My doctors said, ‘there’s no way you’re going to be able to get through nine months of pregnancy and childbirth,’ and I said, ‘oh, no? watch me!’” That was Brenna. She knew she was on limited time, and therefore she was determined to live her life with zest, and to make every day count. At some point she and I lost touch, and in 2012 I decided to Google my old friend to reconnect. What I came across
was a memorial website set up in her honor. What I hadn’t known throughout our friendship (or perhaps hadn’t wanted to) was that the life expectancy for CF patients is typically 30 years. Brenna had lived to the age of 32. I am in touch with Brenna’s sister, Meghan, and her widower, Jason, to this day. I get to watch Brenna’s son grow up through Facebook photos and videos as he is surrounded by loving extended family. Beyond that, I love to read and re-read Brenna’s favorite poem, The Station, by Robert J. Hastings. It reminds me so much of her. Here is my favorite passage from that poem: “So stop pacing the aisles and counting the miles. Instead, swim more rivers, climb more mountains, kiss more babies, count more stars. Laugh more and cry less. Go barefoot oftener. Eat more ice cream. Ride more merry-go-rounds. Watch more sunsets. Life must be lived as we go along. The Station will come soon enough.” I miss you friend.

Thai Noodle Salad with Peanut Sauce By Carolyn S. of Hicksville
A chef by profession, Carolyn S. of Hicksville is always playing in her kitchen, figuring out how to whip up healthier versions of some of her exotic, Asian-fusion favorites.
2 large carrots, spiral sliced 1 red bell pepper, spiral sliced 1/4 cup green onions, diced chopped peanuts as a garnish Canola vegetable oil on-hand

Preparation Add garlic, ginger, peanut butter, lime juice and zest, soy sauce and red pepper flakes to a small bowl and mix together. To a large frying pan, add your canola oil on high heat. Add zucchini, carrots and bell peppers to the pan, and cook until just wilted, 3-4 minutes, stirring occassionally.
What You Will Need 1 clove garlic minced 2 tsps fresh ginger minced 4 tbps peanut butter 1 lime, zested and juiced 2 tbps soy sauce 1/4 tsps red pepper flakes 2 tbps coconut oil 2 cups chicken breast, cooked and shredded 3 zucchini, spiral sliced

Teachers Learn From Teachers The introduction of professional learning communities at Seaford Manor Elementary School has been creating a buzz among teachers this year. Principal Debra Emmerich and Assistant Principal Mary Ellen Kakalos said the goal is to model lifelong learning for students by having teachers immersed in self-directed professional development. Ms. Emmerich and Ms. Kakalos said the idea was sparked by educational researcher John Hattie and his visible learning studies. Manor teachers were invited to join one of four PLCs based upon their interests and passions: visible learning, STEAM, mindfulness and Habits of Mind. Groups
included teachers from every grade level and gave them an opportunity to share ideas, best practices and educational articles during their monthly meetings. “We do so much of our own professional development,” Ms. Emmerich said. “All of our teachers are a wealth of knowledge. They’re such valuable resources for each other.” At the school’s Feb. 28 faculty meeting, the four PLCs came together to share information with each other. Teachers were split into small groups, with at least one representative from each PLC, and rotated among eight different chat stations with discussion prompts. At one station, teachers shared
helpful resources about their respective topics, and at another they discussed how PLCs helped them grow as learners. Ms. Emmerich explained that when teachers are passionate about a subject, the shines through in their instruction, which excites and engages students. That’s why teachers were given the opportunity to pick what they wanted to learn, and how they wanted to learn about it. New PLCs will be formed at Manor on different topics relating to Columbia University’s Teachers College for Reading and Writing Project, a secondyear literacy initiative in the Seaford School District.

Michael Buble Leans in with Love and Laughter By Allison Kugel The year 2019 marks a boon of professional and personal successes for multi-Grammy award winning singer and songwriter, Michael Buble. His family’s much publicized heartbreak as they fought for their son Noah, as he battled pediatric liver cancer, set Buble on a new course of humility which was evident throughout our conversation. Now, with Noah’s health much improved, Michael Buble has re-emerged with a new album, aptly titled Love (or simply, the heart emoji) on which he collaborated with mega-music producer, David Foster; a sold-out worldwide tour and his seventh upcoming musical television special, set to air on NBC on March 20th. My interview with Michael Buble is one of his most authentic and reflective, to date. We cover the subjects of parenthood, success, spirituality, love, humor, and of course, the music.
Michael Buble: That’s great. He’s your boyfriend. It sounds so strange to say that, and whenever I say that people are like, “That sounds weird,” but it’s not. Obviously, not in that way, but it is romantic. He’s going to love you forever. You’ll be the love of his life and he’s the love of your life. Allison Kugel: I’m banking on it. Michael Buble: I love my boys and
Allison Kugel: I’ll tell you what I have always found fascinating about you, and I’m a fan of music from earlier times. I’m forever listening to music from the 1940s, 50s and 60s. What’s so interesting about you is that you came along in the very early 2000s when everything was hip hop, and rap/ rock. What made you believe that you could even break through as somebody who was crooning these songs from a bygone era? Michael Buble: It was probably stupidity (laughs). I mean, thinking that I might have success was probably naiveté. But honest to God, I think I was blinded by the love of the music. And by the way, I love all kinds of music. I love rock, R & B and rap. For me, if it’s good, it’s good. It doesn’t matter who did it or where it came from. I hoped that I could trust my instincts. Allison Kugel: I’ve been listening to this author and speaker named Dr. Joe Dispenza. He studies the patterns of the human brain and how we create our own reality. He essentially talks about how anybody who has ever achieved something great, has been able to believe in a vision and believe in a life for themselves that they couldn’t yet perceive with their physical senses. When I read that you, from the age of two, knew you were going to be a singer, slept with your bible at night and prayed for it, and you held strong to that vision for all of those years before it actually materialized in your life, I put you in that great category. Does that make sense? Michael Buble: Yeah, it does. There is a Canadian writer [Malcolm Gladwell], he wrote a book called The Outliers. His premise was that to truly become great at something, you need to put in ten thousand hours of work. And if you find anyone who’s become truly great at what they do, they have put in that amount of time. There are little parts of what you were talking about that mix with the practical application of doing things enough and focusing enough. You learn by osmosis and your experience helps you to grow. Then by the time you get your opportunity, you’re ready. I think that probably had a lot to do with it for me. Number one, I loved it. I had a passion for the music and the songs. But I did the work; I practiced, I sang, and I studied. I took it all in and digested it as much as possible. I
get what you’re saying. You’re talking about visualizing. I have a friend who tells me often that he used to walk down the street and say to himself, “I have a million dollars.” Not, “I want a million dollars,” but, “I have a million dollars; I am successful.” Allison Kugel: Knowing everything you now know about the music industry, about the odds, about everything you’re aware of; if you had to start from square one, would you have the courage to do it all over again? Michael Buble: No. Allison Kugel: You don’t think so? Michael Buble: I don’t think so. Allison Kugel: Wow. Well thank God that’s not an option! Michael Buble: It’s a hard question, because reality doesn’t come into it. I came home yesterday with my wife and we had to take our son to his checkup, the scans and everything (Buble is talking about his son Noah, who is currently in remission from pediatric liver cancer). We take him every three months for checkups, and it’s really scary. My wife and I actually talked about this and we said, “My God, look at what we did.” She was twenty-three and I was thirty-two. We met in Argentina and fell in love. Everyone told us it was impossible. They told us not to do it, because of the whole long-distance relationship thing. And we did it. We got married. Everyone said, “That’s crazy. That’s not going to work. And whatever you do, don’t have kids, because that’ll be murder.” And then we had kids. And then there’s what happened to our family (referencing son Noah’s cancer diagnosis). One of the first things a doctor told me at one of the hospitals we’d gone to, was to stay strong and help each other through this. A friend of ours, when we had asked why the doctors keep telling us that, this friend who works with families going through things like this, said, that something like 92% of couples who go through this… Allison Kugel: Get divorced… Michael Buble: Get divorced. And many of the 8% who don’t, have [more] children. And of course, my wife and I thought here we are with our beautiful daughter. We were in the car yesterday and I looked at her and said, “Would you do it all over again?” She then answered, “Of course I would do it all over again. I wouldn’t want anything different. You guys are the greatest joy of my life.” But then my question to her was, “But would you be brave enough to do it all over again?” And then she said, “I
don’t know.” And I would have to say the same thing. I don’t know. Allison Kugel: Any of us could say that. It’s like when you bring your newborn baby home from the hospital, and the thought that goes through your mind is that you are going to give this kid a perfect existence, and you’re going to shelter him or her from any pain or discomfort. And then life happens, and don’t have the power to completely shield them from the pain and discomfort of life. Michael Buble: And you don’t have the power to shield them from yourself. For sure, I thought to myself, “He’s going to be better than I am!” I am so flawed. I’m so flawed and so impatient, and there are so many things about me that I don’t like or that I wish I could improve on. And then you go, “Oh my God, he’s acting exactly like me.” Allison Kugel: When you took that hiatus to deal with your son’s health, did you think that could be it for your music career? Michael Buble: Yeah. Allison Kugel: What was the impetus for you to come back? Michael Buble: He was better. We didn’t know how it was going to turn out. My heart was broken, I don’t know. It wasn’t that I ever fell out of love with music. I just didn’t know if I had it in me to go out there and be joyful. It just wasn’t something I could turn on. Allison Kugel: And you returned with an album dedicated to love. The album’s title is a heart emoji, and features some of the most beautiful love songs. Is that because you were so filled with love and gratitude for your son’s healing? Michael Buble: It’s because I was in a bubble, looking out at the world,
and I saw a lot of negative things happening around the world. I realized that I had an opportunity to put beautiful things out there. Allison Kugel: What do you think you are here in this life as Michael Buble to learn and to teach? Michael Buble: Listen, I don’t know yet. I’m still learning a lot. What scares me is I’ve learned so much more in the past five years than I had in all my previous years, combined. The reason I am reticent to give you an answer is because I can’t imagine what I will learn in another five. I have my faith and I try never to put it in people’s faces, because there’s a lot of people who don’t believe the same things I do, and that’s okay. I can keep it simple and say I don’t know what there is or what there isn’t, but I feel in some way we are all connected. I know that each one of us gets to play a part in bringing goodness and humanity into the world. I feel like, sometimes, because of the job I have, it can be magnified. If I can do that as best as I can, that can be my legacy. Allison Kugel: I have to tell you, I was watching footage of your upcoming NBC special (airing Wednesday, March 20th, 10 pm ET/ PT), and you always reduce me to tears. You probably hear stories like this all the time, but when my son was a newborn, I had a routine with him every night, where before I put him down in his crib, I would pick him up in my arms and slow dance with him to your music. When I hear Home or Quando Quando Quando, I just lose it, because I think back to that beautiful time.
I’m close with my boys, but it’s not the same as with my daughter. Everyone told me it would be different, and I was like, “No, no it won’t be.” And it’s different. She looks at me with those big blue eyes and I’m toast.

IMAGINING WITH ROBOTS - The Tad Hills books “Rocket Writes a Story” served as inspiration for a literacy and technology project for fourth- and fifth-graders at Seaford Manor Elementary School. After reading the book, students created their own story characters which they drew and built using Cublet robots. The students learned about coding as they put the different cubes together to create functional robots, while also understanding the sense-plan-act robotic paradigm. More than 80 elementary teachers in the Seaford School District are prepared to step up and
help out in an emergency situation. At a joint faculty meeting for Seaford Harbor and Manor schools,

the time it takes between an injury occurring and the arrival of emergency responders. There are vital steps they can take in those crucial minutes, including designating a person to call 911 so that help does arrive. Ms. Dunkley explained that the techniques can be applied to both children
and adults. After her presentation, teachers were able to practice these skills by putting tourniquets on each other’s arms and filling a wound with gauze on cylindrical foam limbs. The training was part of the district’s health and wellness initiative.
REGIONAL SPELLING BEE - Seaford Middle School Principal Dan Smith and Assistant Principal Lisa Dunn congratulated sixth-grader Patrick Cappetti who won the school’s spelling bee. He will compete in the Long Island Regional Scripps Spelling Bee on March 20 at St. Joseph’s College.
