Gorging themselves on leaves, gypsy moth caterpillars weaken and can kill more than 300 different species of trees. Since 1970, they’ve defoliated more than 75 million acres. The Answer That’s why the U.S. Department of Agriculture requires homeowners by law to inspect and remove gypsy moth egg masses from household goods prior to moving across state lines—and get an official certificate of inspection. What You Need To Do • Check all outdoor household goods— lawn furniture, grills, outdoor toys, camping equipment—for egg masses.
• Use a putty knife, stiff brush or similar hand tool to dispose of any egg masses you do find into a container of hot, soapy water, or place them in a plastic bag, seal it, and set it in the sun. To get the certificate,
you can perform a selfinspection or hire a state-certified pesticide applicator. The American Moving and Storage Association says you should then give the inspection certificate to your moving van driver.

Seaford Middle School’s annual science fair added a new dimension this year, incorporating all aspects of STEM education. The afterschool event featured presentations by students who have been studying the areas of science, technology, engineering and math for several weeks. The voluntary fair was open to all students in sixth, seventh and eighth grade. Middle school and high school science teachers were joined by administrators, parents and siblings in talking to the young scientists about their projects. Eighth graders Justin Cettina and Ryan D’Orio have worked together on science experiments during all three years of middle school. This year’s topic was water quality, and the pair analyzed water from several

All proceeds raised will provide essential Support Service Provider (SSP) assistance for HKNC staff and students who are deafblind. SSPs are specially trained individuals who provide visual and auditory information, human guide support and access to communication for individuals who are deafblind to enable them to actively participate in everyday life.
Students Are Leading Learners Lungs are an essential part of the human body and elementary students in the Seaford School District have been learning about those and other vital organs. Kindergartners and first graders at Seaford Harbor and Manor elementary schools are participating in the 12week “Structure and Function: Human Body Systems” unit through Project Lead the Way. Students are immersed in their study of the human body through hands-on activities, which are led by library media specialists Jennifer Brand at Harbor and Samantha Simon at Manor. To learn more about the respiratory system, students constructed a pair
of lungs from two bags, two straws and tape. They blew into the straws to see how lungs expand and contract, just like in the human body. Ms. Brand said that students have also participated in activities to learn about bones, muscles and the stomach. For the culminating project, they will work in small groups to build a waterproof cast. “They do like learning about the body,” Ms. Brand said, noting that children want to learn how their own bodies work. “This unit is very relatable. The students have good questions and they want to know more.” Project Lead the Way is a new initiative at the
elementary level in Seaford this year. Tom Lynch, the executive director for instructional technology and STEM, said that it has been a successful launch, evidenced by how engaged students are in the different activities. During the inaugural unit, second and third graders participated in Grids and Games, in which they learned the basics of coding and worked their way up to creating video games on iPads. After the human body unit concludes, fourth and fifth graders will learn about the science of flight and design a solution to deliver supplies via an aircraft.
