After a successful fall season, Girls on the Run is back this spring with both virtual and in-person options for girl empowerment in the Long Island area. Girls on the Run (GOTR) is a nonprofit that aims to inspire 3rd- to 8th-grade girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident through running and other physical activity. Each GOTR practice is led by trained volunteers who teach important life lessons such as standing up for oneself, setting and achieving goals, and managing emotions. This past fall Girls on the Run quickly adapted its research-based curriculum and engaging programming to serve girls in the community amidst the global pandemic. Practices are already held outdoors. At practices, participants and coaches maintain social distance and utilize extra sanitation materials. On bad weather days, rain dates or virtual lessons that mirror the in-person lessons can be used if necessary. More than 100 girls participated in the fall and coaches, caregivers, and Girls on the Run staff were all inspired by the results. “This has been such a positive experience season participant. “I wasn’t so sure when my husband for our daughter! We have even noticed a very positive change in her overall attitude signed up our daughter for this program and behavior!” –Parent of 4th grade fall as she’s not very athletic, but I was wrong.

T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-proﬁt organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country and multiple wishes have being granted on Long Island recently! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. Recently, many Long Island residents had their wishes come true. Each week for the remaining weeks this month, I will feature wishes that were granted right here on Long Island, starting with Kathy W. Dorothy Delia is an 87 year old resident of West Babylon. She worked and volunteered for the Salvation Army in Ridegewood and Queens for over 20 years. Prior to COVID, she was very involved in her church by coordinating the prayer chain, greeting worshippers and helping at fundraisers and events. Dorothy desperately needed dental work, but because she lives on a ﬁxed income, she could not afford it on her own. She had been losing teeth and could only eat soft foods. She wished for dental work, which was granted! In February 2020, she got a new healthy smile! Many seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable

You can visit Town Hall during Passport Weekend to receive free assistance in preparing your application, organizing your documents, obtaining a photo and submitting the documents for approval.” Requirements for applying for a passport include: One 2x2 color photograph with a clear view of the applicant’s face against a plain white or light colored background.

In recognition of Women’s History Month, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson announced that nominations are now being accepted for the 2021 Women of Distinction Awards Program. Residents are encouraged to nominate extraordinary women who have made a difference in their communities.

“The Women of Distinction Program was created to recognize extraordinary women who go above and beyond to improve the lives of those around them and our community,” said Councilwoman Johnson, who serves as Chairwoman of the Women of Distinction Committee. “If you know a special woman who helps make our community a better place

to live, we invite you to nominate her to be a 2021 Town of Oyster Bay Woman of Distinction.” Supervisor Saladino added, “We are proud to recognize extraordinary women in our Town and invite residents to submit nominations of those who make a difference and enrich the lives of others. We look forward to sharing their stories and recognizing their efforts

to make our community, families and Town a better place to live, work and raise a family.” Those nominated as Women of Distinction will be recognized at a special awards ceremony hosted by the Town Board in May. HS Senior Advances In Scholarship Contest Seaford High School senior Sarah Keane is a candidate for a scholarship from the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association. Sarah is one of only two student-athletes from Section VIII, which includes all Nassau County high schools, to advance in competition. Sarah, who learned about the scholarship opportunity from her guidance counselor, is a member of the crosscountry, winter track and spring track teams. She primarily competes in 5K races for cross-country and 1,500- and 3,000-meter races for track.

To be considered for the scholarship, Sarah had to complete an application with all of her academic and athletic accomplishments, as well as her school leadership and community service participation. She also had to submit a letter of recommendation and had to write an essay on the topic, “How high school athletics has impacted my life.” Having competed at the high school level since seventh grade, Sarah drew upon those experiences in her essay and how her many years on the cross-country and track teams shaped her

as a leader. She also cited the volunteer work she does with Shooting Stars, a program that provides athletic opportunities to children and adults with intellectual and physical disabilities. Sarah, who is still in the process of selecting a college, plans to study neuroscience or physical therapy. She has moved on to the state level in the 2021 NIAAA scholarship essay contest, and winners at the section and national level receive monetary awards. “I’m grateful that our school is able to connect us to these opportunities,” she said.
