Shortly after, they expanded upon their services for youth and have grow to provide a multitude of programs for children, adults, and families through Federal, State, County and private funding streams.

YES Community Counseling Center (YES CCC) is a local non-profit organization with a mission to increase awareness about personal and community issues, prevent and treat substance abuse and to promote healthy families and a safe community.
YES Community Counseling Center has what they call a PACT (Partnering In Action and Change For Tomorrow) Initiative, which addresses our nation’s top substance abuse prevention priorities among persons aged 9-20 – underage drinking, marijuana, and opioid use. PACT seeks to understand patterns of youth and young adult underage drinking and substance use and implement targeted evidence based programs, policies, trainings, and education. Through community collaboration, they provide datadriven strategies and educational outreach to strengthen our communities’ prevention capacity to change the conditions by which youth and young adult substance use exists. PACT is comprised of five communities and school districts
(Farmingdale, Island Trees, Levittown, Massapequa and Plainedge) and collaborates with Farmingdale Alcohol Drug Abuse and Prevention Team (ADAPT), Levittown Community Action Coalition (LCAC), and Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC). They also partner with the Long Island Prevention Resource Center (LIPRC), Nassau County Police Department, and New York National Guard Counterdrug Task Force. Those entities work together to prevent the onset and progression of alcohol and substance use among youth and young adults aged 9-20. Prevention begins when communities’ health problems are understood within their environment; only then can YES CCC effectively plan and implement strategic action. The PACT Initiative uses the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA) Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) to identify and select comprehensive, data-driven strategies to develop community solutions. The SPF is a 5-step planning process that guides the selection, implementation and evaluation of effective, culturally appropriate and sustainable prevention activities. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Vicki Walsh announce that the Town is seeking individuals who are interested in working as lifeguards for local pools and beaches. The Town is accepting applications from qualified, certified individuals interested in lifeguarding positions at Tappen Beach and Pool in Glenwood Landing, as well as beach facilities in Bayville and Oyster Bay (Centre Island, Ransom, Stehli, and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park), as well as Philip B. Healey Beach in Massapequa, for the upcoming summer season. “Our lifeguards provide an invaluable
service in protecting residents and have helped save countless lives in both pool and ocean waters,” said Supervisor Saladino. “The Town lifeguarding staff has a tremendous sense of dedication and understanding of integrity, accountability, and the importance of teamwork.” Town lifeguards are hired for the summer season, which runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Positions are available at all Town pools and beaches. Applicants must be a minimum of 16 years old, possess a current Lifeguard Certification and a current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer. Qualified applicants may apply
in person at the Town of Oyster Bay Parks Department Human Resources Office, located in Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Road in Massapequa. “Having a summer lifeguard job at one of our beautiful summer facilities helps build confidence, self-esteem and leadership skills,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “In addition to the great sense of pride one has in being a lifeguard, there is also the great opportunity to spend time helping others at one of our beautiful summer facilities.” For more information, contact the Town of Oyster Bay Department of Parks at (516) 7974167.

When It Comes To Kindness, Manor Students Are Sleeping Giants For Seaford Manor Elementary School’s great kindness challenge, students were asked to donate new pajamas. They responded with great generosity, contributing 68 new pairs of sleepwear to the cause. The challenge was spearheaded by social worker Jennifer DeMieri, and students donated over
a 10-day span in February. Pajamas were donated to local organizations to help children in need. “The goal of these very special days is to teach our students about the importance of kindness and helping others,” she said. “The students were so excited to contribute to this cause. Even through these difficult times, our
students and families continue to prove that kindness, compassion and empathy is what makes us Seaford Manor strong.” To further spread kindness, the pajamas and little treats were placed in bags that students decorated with uplifting messages.

Town Announces Environmental Poster Contest For 4th Grade Students
To raise awareness of pollution and its impact on Mother Nature, Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Vicki Walsh announced the return of the Town’s Environmental Poster Contest, open to all 4th grade students in the Town of Oyster Bay. This year’s poster contest, Our Town Our Environment, invites youngsters to create a poster depicting ‘How Plastic Pollution Harms our Waterways.’ “This poster contest presents a great opportunity to bring environmental awareness to our young people, making them more knowledgeable on the importance of protecting our waterways and safeguarding our natural resources,” said Supervisor Saladino. Both of these nonprofit organizations have been a huge asset in helping protect our waterways,” said Councilwoman Walsh. “I invite all 4th grade students to participate in this great program, which provides a great opportunity to become more educated on the serious issue of plastic pollutions in our waterways with the potential of winning some great prizes.” Prizes will be awarded for the top three submissions, with 1st Place receiving a private tour of Oyster Bay Harbor aboard a Friends of the Bay vessel,
$200 gift certificate for the Waterfront Center in Oyster Bay, a tree planted at the winning student’s school for Arbor Day, a nautical trivia game, and Friends of the Bay apparel. Submission deadline for the contest is Friday, April 1st, with winners to be announced on Earth Day, April 22nd. In support of their mission of giving back to veterans and first responders, nonprofit Paws of War recently hosted their “Hearts and Heroes” event at their headquarters in Nesconset, where they provided 27 service animals with free veterinary care, which included wellness checks, flea and tick medications, vaccinations, bags of dog food and microchipping service. The pandemic has brought financial challenges to veterans and first responders Many disabled veterans live on low or fixed incomes and their service animal’s medical care is essential so they can provide the level of support and comfort upon which the veterans depend. “As a former veteran, I know how critical and expensive it is to take care of these service animals. They are more than just pets; these animals provide emotional support and tasks for these heroes when it is needed most,” said Kelli Porti, Veteran & Community Outreach Liaison for Paws of War. Dr. Marissa Altieri, DVM, volunteered her expert veterinary care to the pop-up clinic and its patients, donating her time to assist Paws of War as a way to give back to the community and support the non-profit’s mission.

The American Red Cross notes that it responds to an emergency every eight minutes. Perhaps most remarkable is that 95 percent of the organization’s disaster relief workers are volunteers. rely on volunteers from all walks of life, and each organization has plenty of opportunities for individuals willing to give back. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some medical conditions can put people at an elevated risk for certain infections. Heart disease, diabetes mellitus type 1 or 2, chronic lung disease, including COPD, and kidney failure are among the conditions that can increase a person’s risk for certain infections. The CDC notes the importance of recognizing this potential connection, as such a recognition can help people understand
the role vaccines can play in promoting their overall health. It’s also vital that men and women realize the connection between their lifestyle choices and their risk for certain infections. For example, excessive consumption of alcohol and smoking are two controllable risk factors that can elevate a person’s risk for infection. PSEG Long Island cautions that metallic balloons can be hazardous PSEG Long Island is reminding customers that balloons released into the air can become entangled in overhead electric equipment and cause a host of problems. “Safety is PSEG Long Island’s No. 1 priority. That’s why we’re cautioning customers to please hold onto their metallic balloons,” said John O’Connell,
PSEG Long Island’s vice president of Transmission and Distribution Operations. “Though they’re festive, fun and look nice, we want the public to be aware that metallic balloons also conduct electricity. If they get loose and come into contact with a power line or other electrical equipment, that could lead to power outages,
fire and, possibly, injuries.” To mitigate these risks, PSEG Long Island encourages the public to follow these safety guidelines: • Metallic balloons and other decorations should be kept clear of overhead power lines and equipment, and never purposely released into the air. • All balloons with helium
should be secured to weights that prevent them from floating away. • To properly dispose of a Mylar balloon, safely puncture it in several places to release the helium, and discard it in the trash. • NEVER touch a power line. Do not attempt to retrieve a balloon, toy or anything caught in an overhead power line. Report it
