Reading Rocks encouraged to read at least 15 minutes daily. Each week during the campaign, students are being asked to complete an activity packet based on the book. On Wednesdays, special themed activities are planned, such as “Crazy Sock Day” and “Party like a Rockstar! Seaford High School students in Advanced Placement Environmental Science and those involved with planet-saving efforts expanded their knowledge about green technologies when the first-ever ecofriendly food truck made its debut at the school. The truck, owned by Chefs on Fire catering, was modified to be more energy efficient using natural resources by Seaford resident and longtime coffee business owner Neil Robbins. Robbins, who caters to numerous clients in the acting industry, serving on such sets as “Blue Bloods,” “The Good Wife,” “Madam Secretary” and “Blacklist,” was inspired to design the truck to align with the environmentally conscious mindset of the acting community. After a $15,000 investment in solar equipment and much trial and error, Robbins said the two-month-old truck will be able to run more efficiently for about 8-10 hours per day and serve 300-400 people on a constant basis throughout a typical day on a movie set.
It’s equipped with solar panels to generate power for lighting, heating and running cooking equipment. A blender is connected to a bicycle that when ridden can produce smoothies and other blended concoctions. Tableware products stocked in the truck, such as plates, cups, cutlery, as well as cleaning products are all made from natural, plant-based sources such as bamboo, sugarcane and cornstarch, and are compostable and biodegradable. Students curiously toured the truck as Robbins pointed out its energy- saving features, and took turns riding the bicycle that operated the blender. Back in Keri Degnan’s AP Environmental Science classroom, students examined the various ecofriendly paper products as Robbins spoke further about green technologies. Students agreed with Robbins plea that it was up to their generation to save the planet by spreading awareness and educating others about the benefits of green technologies and
the impact they have on cleaning up the planet’s resources. “Mr. Robbin’s presentation really opened my eyes to see how easy it is to make changes that benefit our environment on a day-to-day basis,” said senior Jack Robinson. Junior Kathryn Davison called the presentation “both informative and fun. I really learned a lot about how I, as an individual, can make a difference in creating a greener world.” She said she hopes Robbins continues to visit schools and educate people on the possible business opportunities available in a world looking to be more green, and hopes to see more trucks like his in the future. Lauren Thompsen, advisor of Green Team, an environmental club, added that she believed the students “were impressed that Mr. Robbins followed through on his ideas about creating a ‘green’ version of a food truck and that the Green Team is always interested in people who use alternative energy.”

‘Tis the time of year when all become Irish for a day, in the honorary sense anyway, and partake in the various St. Patrick’s Day celebrations held across Long Island and New York City. The funny thing is – well, perhaps more ironic than outright humorous – is that when my family and I traveled to Ireland several years ago, we were somewhat surprised to learn that those native to the Emerald Isle do not commemorate the occasion in even remotely the same manner as we do. In fact, the holiday takes on a far more religious tone, filled with pilgrimages to mountaintops to honor St. Patrick himself; a far cry from the drinking and parades which wind through most main streets on this side of the pond.
Speaking of Ireland, and travel, I certainly wish to do more of it, both here and abroad. Before our family trip, I had never been on a plane in my 30 years on this earth; nor, of course, had I bothered to apply for a passport. Old-fashioned road trips across the good old U.S. of A had never held much appeal due to my, shall we say, occasional tendency toward motion sickness during any car ride surpassing two or so hours. And so, at this point, my travels have extended ever so slightly north and south of New York, about halfway down the east coast – no further. And my passport, while it proudly sports that one stamp from Ireland, has remained packed away ever since. Unacceptable, I know. And with that, a new season is on the horizon, although whether Mother Nature will
cooperate remains to be seen. March has always been a notoriously fickle month, what with the remnants of winter storms to contend with, spring rains hovering overhead and blossoms waiting to burst forth from the trees. It is a time of beginnings, of growth, of shaking off the chill of the last several months to head out and feel the warmth of the sun as we explore the great outdoors. No need to pack a suitcase – just hop in the car and go, in any direction, and enjoy the beauty on this long island that we call home. So, as you head out in your green attire this week, take a deep breath of fresh air and start planning some fun activities to see you through to summer. Spring may be a gateway to the season of sun and surf and sand, but it is pretty spectacular in its own right. Enjoy it.

The Seaford High School Drama Club took audiences into the whimsical world of Dr. Seuss with an amusing and colorful production of “Seussical the Musical” at Seaford High School
Auditorium, March 2nd4th. “Seussical,” directed and choreographed by Seaford alumna Samantha Gates, Class of 2009, showcased Dr. Seuss’
beloved characters, such as The Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, Lazy Mayzie LaBird and JoJo. The Cat in the Hat, played by Elissa Castro, guided
the audience with the Bird Girls into the Jungle of Nool where Horton, played by Christopher Ho, discovered a speck of dust containing Whoville. After meeting Jojo, portrayed by Peyton Franco who is sent to military school by his parents, Horton tried to protect the speck of dust but was ridiculed everywhere he went. Horton’s journey continued with Gertrude McFuzz and her onefeathered tail, played by Amanda Cesario and Mayzie LaBird, played by Lauren Paladino, and by the end of the show, questions such as “Will Horton ever be rescued?”

100th DAY - 100 days smarter! The students in the blue room of the Seaford Community Preschool recently celebrated the 100th day of school. They made a 100 day snack and dress like 100 year olds.
Artwork Showcased Twenty-four students from the Seaford School District had their artistic talent on display at the Art Supervisors Association’s 13th Annual Nassau AllCounty Art Exhibition at Farmingdale State College, March 12th. The free exhibit honored the talents of nearly 1200 young artists in kindergarten through twelfth grade who have demonstrated excellence in a wide variety of twodimensional visual art forms, including drawing, painting, printmaking, computer graphics and photography. The ASA said the event also provided an opportunity for the community to appreciate “the creativity, imagination, and skill
that is produced by a fundamental, innovative, and vibrant K-12 sequential visual arts education.” The Seaford students featured in the exhibit were: Harbor Elementary School students Morgan Prosser, grade 1; Amelia Curry, grade 2; and Kayleigh Elias, grade 3 Manor Elementary School students Annie Donohue, grade 2, Victoria Stebner, grade 3 and Emily Salce, grade 4; Seaford Middle School sixth-grader Natalie Masters and seventh-graders Julie Lange, Anthony Munro, Annarose Romanelli, Julia Saulpaugh, and Rabeya Shahid; Seaford High School freshman Autumn Perry, sophomore Isabella Torelli, juniors Kendall
Lowinger, Taylor Stone, and Zoe Zedalis; and seniors Andrew Blaurock, Lauren Delsignore, Morgan Meehan, Alexis Silverstein, Analisa Vazquez, Isaac Wong, and Taylor Yarmie. In addition to the exhibit, Lauren Delsignore was one of numerous graduating seniors awarded a scholarship at an invitation-only ceremony. Lauren has taken every opportunity in high school to study art and has taken college-level classes both in and out of high school. She volunteers her time teaching art to kindergartners once a week and plans on studying art education at LIU Post beginning this fall.

Make-a-Wish Donation Ten Long Island Allstate agency owners recently received Agency Helping Hands in the Community Awards for their commitment to helping others. This award earned Make-A-Wish Metro New York a $10,000 grant from The Allstate Foundation. The Allstate agents, whose offices are all located in Nassau County, teamed up with their staff and Allstate’s National Catastrophe team to volunteer at the 2016 Make-A-Wish Walk For Wishes® event at Eisenhower Park. As part of their efforts, the volunteers shared helpful information and resources for local families to build disaster preparedness kits. The kits included a hand-crank radio/flashlight, water bottle, dust mask, garbage bags and hand sanitizing wipes, among other items. “Being able to prepare Long Island families for life’s uncertainties is truly an honor and a privilege that our agents were thrilled to be able to do, while teaming up with such an impactful organization like Make-AWish,” said Don Rubbo, New York Regional Sales Leader. “Commitment to our communities is a natural extension of what we do every day – and to see the community and our agents come together for such an amazing cause was extraordinary.
