The above is one of my favorite quotes, penned by American author Lemony Snicket, creator of the famed “Series of Unfortunate Events” books and several other works. A bit tongue in cheek, with a dash of sarcasm, his words have always resonated with me on many levels. Mostly concerning the irony of life as a whole, they offer an undeniable degree of wisdom in between the cynical undertones. I have often been categorized as an unapologetic idealist; which is to say, optimism mixed with a touch of unrealism. Having taken to heart the expression that you can - quite literally - do anything you put your mind to, I see no valid reason why the seemingly

impossible be not, in fact, very possible with the proper balance of dedication and drive. Of course, this concept often involves multiple parties working as one, which is generally where problems come into play. Individually, we can each set our minds to particular goals and aspirations and see through the necessary steps to complete them. As a group, even a small one, it often requires a meeting of the minds, so to speak, a bit of give and take to ﬁnd an acceptable middle ground. The problem with this is agreeing upon the “happy” medium. As with most favorite quotations, this particular one seems to resonate year after year, albeit applied to different circumstances; but relevant, nonetheless. As much as time marches on, just as many aspects of life remain the same. I will always feel optimism is a preferable quality to embody, farreaching as it may be. If you can’t hope for the best, then what is the

point of setting goals at all? Sure, the outcome will always be in question; but this is what makes taking calculated risks - and yes, even the occasional blind leap of faith - necessary. It may not pan out the way you desire; but, on the other end, it just might lead to something even more wonderful in the long run. Who’s to say? If life has taught any of us a fairly universal lesson, it is that there are plenty of things beyond our control, just as many things within our grasp; and, as good or bad as a situation may seem at a particular moment, it is apt to change in the blink of an eye. This is why it’s so incredibly important to hold on to the moments of peace and prosperity, ﬂeeting as they may be, while always driving forward to overcome the obstacles which present themselves. If you run over a few lemons in the process; well, that’s what sometimes leads to the sweetest batches of lemonade.

The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night. Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers together form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters, local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders, local village government and other agencies. After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup announced their decision to become an independent notfor-profit corporation named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become self-sustaining, with a solid foundation of local community support. Music Students Shine

March Is National Music In Our Schools Month!

The Seaford School District’s music program gives students an introduction to musical concepts from their first days of kindergarten and allows them to explore their talents and abilities through senior year. March is designated as Music in Our Schools Month by the National Association for Music Education. “Music in Our Schools Month is a great opportunity to recognize our dedicated music faculty and our extremely talented students,” said Music Department Chairwoman Barbara Sherwin. “Seaford’s young musicians shine bright because of our strong program and our passionate teachers.” In elementary school general music classes, kindergartners learn about pitch, volume, speed, rhythm and beat. At the Seaford Harbor School, students are introduced to the recorder in third grade, while at the Seaford Manor School they learn guitar skills. Instrumental music and choral instruction begins in fourth grade. Both schools have a fourthgrade band and a fifthgrade band, as well as a fourth- and fifth-grade chorus. Fifth-graders can also audition for the jazz band at each building. Seaford Middle School has a band for each grade,

Parade. Chorus members will visit Boston from March 28th-31st to sing at Old North Church, the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, and the Plymouth Visitors Center. Each spring, music teachers prepare students for the New York State School Music Association’s solo festival. This is an optional opportunity for music students who wish to have their performances judged by experienced musicians. This year, more than 100 students in grades 5-12 will take advantage of the opportunity. Recently, 26 Seaford musicians performed with their peers from across Nassau County at the Nassau Music Educators Association’s All-County music festival. The district’s 10 music teachers belong to several organizations that provide them with networking and professional development opportunities. Ms. Sherwin explained that students who participate in the music program learn skills that beneﬁt them in all subject areas and in life. “Music helps them to open up their minds, to think more creatively and think outside the box,” she said. “Being in an ensemble is a large-scale, team effort. Everyone had to work together for it to work well.”

They learn to compose their own pieces on electronic keyboards. Seventhgraders not in band or chorus also take a general music class, which focuses on music history, styles and theory. Seaford High School has a concert band and a symphonic band, as well as a treble choir and a chamber choir. Afterschool groups include a barbershop ensemble, jazz band, pep band, marching band, select choir and Sweet Adelines. The school bands perform at winter and spring concerts while the extracurricular groups will play at the Tri-M Music Honor Society induction ceremony. The marching band creates a show with the color guard for the four home varsity football games and the Newsday Marching Band festival, while the pep band plays at any home football playoff games, as well as boys and girls varsity basketball games. Standing Against Bullying Students have long been accustomed to ﬁre drills and bus drills as ways to prepare for unexpected situations, and at Seaford Harbor Elementary Schools, bully drills are now practiced as well. In an effort to ensure a kind and respectful school culture, members of the Student Council wrote their own bully drills based on real-life situations. They then performed for the mock situations for other students, so each class can conduct bully drills throughout the year. The idea came out of the Sweethearts and

Fifthgrade teacher and Student Council adviser Kerry Hansen said it is important that students “just know what to do” if bullying occurs. The scenarios don’t just apply to the bully and the target, but all students who see it happen. Ms. Hansen explained that the goal is make students “upstanders” instead of “bystanders.” The bully

drills focus on three messages: take the target away from the bully, be a buddy and confront the bully or call for help. “This is important, especially for the younger students, because it teaches them that bullying isn’t right and it teachers them what to do if you see bullying happening,” said ﬁfth-grader Sean Rodgers. “You have to think fast. It’s important to have a school without bullying. It can keep spreading to the entire world and make our world a better place.”

Turning Back Time The 1980s came to Seaford High School as the drama club electriﬁed crowds with its production of “The Wedding Singer” from March 2nd-4th. The musical was based upon the movie starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. Older People Improve Life For Others And Themselves (NAPSI)—Many older Americans have discovered that sharing their accumulated wisdom with others who need help can be a big win all around. Here’s a look at two ways you can stretch your mind and show your heart: Experience Corps AARP Foundation Experience Corps unites teachers, schools and older adults to improve children’s academic and social outcomes. This beneﬁts the children, the schools and the volunteers. The program has been proven to help children who aren’t reading at grade level become better readers by the end of third grade. Last school year, 76 percent of students who were below grade level at the beginning of the year raised their reading and literacy performance by one or more proﬁciency levels with the help of Experience Corps volunteers. The goal is to improve children’s literacy,

strengthen communities, develop cultures of inspiration in schools and support hardworking teachers. It’s already changed the lives of thousands of children in schools across America. Volunteers should be age 50 or older; have at least a high school diploma or GED; pass a criminal background check; pass a basic literacy screening; attend 25 hours of annual training; and have five to 15 hours a week to offer during the school year. Tax-Aide AARP Foundation also runs Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, giving special attention to those 50 and older. It offers free tax-filing help to those who need it most. You do not need to be a member of AARP or even a retiree to use this free service. IRS tax-certified volunteer preparers in libraries, malls, banks, community centers and senior centers answer

questions and prepare tax returns. In addition to earned and retirement income reporting, they can also help with investment income (interest, dividends, and capital gains for Schedule D), Schedule C for individuals with small businesses that have less than $25,000 in annual expenses, and various health care, education, child and earned income credits. Compassionate and friendly individuals can volunteer for the upcoming tax season. Volunteers receive training and continued support in a welcoming environment.
