Lead Instructor Firefighter Marcela Loeber shared her knowledge and experience with the Scouts and covered topics such as caring for younger children, using first aid kits effectively and knowing how to prevent serious outdoor injuries. The Scouts enjoyed touring an ambulance as well. Great job ladies!

In recognition of their outstanding artistic talent and academic strength, 19 Seaford High School students were inducted into National Art Honor Society during a formal ceremony before family, teachers and friends. The new inductees, along with 20 current members who renewed their membership, bring the total number of members to 39, a slight uptick from last year. To be considered for induction, students must maintain an average of 90 or above in all fine arts classes and perform six hours of community service per year. Membership is also based on scholarship, service and character. The ceremony, organized by art teachers Donna Manning and Michael Kerr, featured a special address by professional artist, author and Seaford alumnus Joe Fig. His critically acclaimed

Spring Awakening Are you all enjoying your one extra hour of daylight? Feels more springy already, doesn’t it? Me, I’ve always looked to St. Patrick’s Day as the transitional date when winter finally – and hopefully thoroughly – gives way to spring. After that, it’s only a matter of time ‘til we’re dying Easter eggs, breaking out the pastels and looking to plant our gardens. After journeying to Ireland this past summer, it was fascinating to see how little the homeland pays attention to this

“holiday.” It is a uniquely American celebration of… well, in theory, Irish pride. In reality… let’s just say, Irish heritage seems to be optional in the grand parade of drunkenness and debauchery that descends upon the entire month of March here in New York. But back to the dawn of spring and sunshine and butterﬂies and ﬂowers… there’s something very exciting about this rebirth of Mother Nature, isn’t there? The time for hibernation is over. Get out the cleaning supplies, put away any lingering remnants of winter, and start redecorating for this

new season of rebirth. So, take solace. It’s been one long, tedious winter, to be sure. But spring is ready to be sprung upon us all. Open the windows, let the light in, stop and smell the ﬂowers – once they’ve begun to bloom, of course. Pretty soon, the snowcovered landscape will be a distant memory. We’ve all claimed we’re going to enjoy this upcoming spring and summer that much more after the last several months of bone-chilling cold. So let’s follow through on that, shall we? No time like the present to begin anew.

In today’s society where children seem to grow up overnight and they are faced with making decisions about drugs, sexuality and violence before they understand the consequences, it’s so important that parents and teens build strong relationships and learn skills to handle the challenges that lie ahead. ACTIVE PARENTING OF TEENS: FAMILIES IN ACTION is a six session family program developed around the premise that parents and teens are more likely to learn successfully when they learn together. The program is designed to break down barriers of communication, promote cooperation and address challenges head on. Teens and parents will spend part of the time in separate groups learning complementary skills and then come together for discussion of the skills learned. Setting a new milestone for Seaford High School, senior cheerleader Mackenzie Meyer became the first student to earn a student-athlete award from the Long Island Cheerleading Coaches Association (LICCA). The honor, which comes with a $1,000 scholarship, is awarded to three top cheerleaders throughout Long Island based on cheerleading skills, grade-point average, academic transcripts and extracurricular activities. Mackenzie is a

member of the “top 25” academically ranked students in the Class of 2014. Her athleticism helped bring the Seaford High School cheerleading squad to the National High School Cheerleading Championship (NHSCC) in Orlando, Florida two years in a row. The team most recently placed 13th in the nation in the semi-finals round for their division and 2nd in the Cheerleading Worlds competition for their division. Mackenzie said she was “really excited” about the

honor and, although she is currently undecided about her college choice, she hopes to cheer in college. “Mackenzie has dedicated her entire school career pushing herself to do the best she could and all of her effort paid off, said Cheerleading Coach Lisa Ferrari. I couldn’t be more proud to have her represent our team and Seaford as a whole. She is an amazing and talented young lady and I know she has the brightest of futures ahead of her.”

Heeding Lessons Former Patchogue resident and Ecuadorean immigrant Joselo Lucero, whose brother Marcelo was attacked and stabbed to death by seven local high school students in 2008, brought his story of pain and tolerance to Seaford High School to heighten awareness and help forge change. Arranged by Spanish teacher Dr. Sonia Zervakos, nearly 100 students in foreign language classes listened to Lucero, a former welder turned public speaker, as he recounted that tragic day, the pain his family still endures and the struggle to make sense of it — all to educate the importance of tolerance and respecting the differences in others. Considered one of the first documented “hate crimes” in the area, the community was shocked to learn about gangrelated activities in

which teenagers roamed the streets in pursuit of Hispanic immigrants to attack. The case had become a chilling example of what happens when animosity and hate take hold. Showing video of his brother and family, Lucero said, “The saddest part of the trial was to sit in court and look at the person who killed my brother every day. My brother was hard working and cared about his family. It was so hard to tell my mother back in Ecuador that he was killed because he was Hispanic. The pain was so immense.” Lucero urged students to use his tragedy as an example to bring about change. “You are teenagers. You have so many years ahead of you,” Lucero said. “You can make a decision. If one of you changes your mind and stands up, you can stop something but you have to

be willing to face it.” Lucero also urged those in the audience who may be victims of hate to seek help. “Talk to your teachers or your principal. You are not going to want to be in my situation.” Students reacted to Lucero’s presentation by saying, “It is a shame that racism still exists in our world and that people lose their lives over it,” said Cassie Pensa. “Finding out it happened so close to my own home rendered it even more shocking,” said Shanon O’Kane….”I can’t begin to imagine what Mr. Lucero and his family have been through after their loss.” “The horrible actions of the kids in my age group were heartbreaking,” added Kaitlyn Musillo. “No family should have to lose a family member due to hate and discrimination.”
