Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc. (www.pal-o-mine.org, Islandia, NY), a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, is looking to generous and animal loving Long Islanders to help it raise funds to feed its herd over this winter. The organization is looking to raise $6,000 to help cover the cost of hay bales. Pal-O-Mine’s herd, which includes 22 horses, eats 10 bales of hay each day. Each bale weighs 50 lbs. and costs $10, making Pal-O-Mine’s monthly hay bill $3,000. By helping the organization raise $6,000, this expense will be covered through March 31st.

T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country and multiple wishes have being granted on Long Island recently! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. Recently, many Long Island residents had their wishes come true. Each week for the remaining weeks this month, I will feature wishes that were granted right here on Long Island, starting with Kathy W. Kathy is a 74 year old resident of Middle Island who was nominated by one of her friends. She has trouble hearing, but continues to be an active participant in the Catholic Daughters of America and the first one to jump in and help out, according to her nominator. She is also very active in the parish senior club and pre-COVID she attended all the functions. Kathy needed hearing aids, but could not afford them on her fixed income. However, after being nominated and chosen, The Twilight Wish Foundation was able to grant her wish of receiving hearing aids! This was a life changing experince for all involved.

Many seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable conditions. Granting a Twilight Wish can help change that! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. Please note, when going to grant a wish, this foundation takes all the necessary safety precautions. If you would like to get involved with The Twilight Wish Foundation, you can! Town of Oyster Bay Councilwoman Laura Maier cautions residents to be on alert of potential telephone scams, particularly those soliciting any personal information or monetary contribution. “Time and time again we hear about scammers trying to obtain sensitive information from unsuspecting residents, especially our senior citizens,” said Councilwoman Maier. “Many times, scammers pose as officials from the Internal Revenue Service, Social Security Administration or other well-known agency, designed to intimidate the call recipient.” The Councilwoman noted that many times, their return phone

numbers can also be falsified to appear as a familiar number. In addition to seniors, others frequently targeted include students and first-generation Americans. Current common scams include offers of debt relief, car warranty extensions, and credit repairs. Scammers have also been known to pose as family members allegedly in trouble and seeking money. “The last thing families need, especially during these uncertain times, is someone trying to scam them out of their hardearned money,” said Councilwoman Maier. “We alert all residents to be wary of any unsolicited phone calls, especially those requesting money or personal information,

even if they claim to be from a government or bank entity.” The Federal Trade Commission offers the following tips to residents who fall victim to scam phone calls: · Hang up the phone. Don’t press numbers to speak to alive operator or take your number off the list, this just confirms your phone number. · Consider asking your phone company whether they charge for blocking phone numbers. · Don’t trust your caller ID. Scammers use the internet to make calls all over the world. · Report your experience to the FTC online or by calling 1-877-382-4357. Visit www.ftc.gov/calls for more information.

To raise awareness of pollution and its impact on Mother Nature, Councilwoman Michele Johnson and Councilman Lou Imbroto today announced a new Environmental Poster Contest open to 4th and 5th grade students in the Town of Oyster Bay. The theme of the poster contest is ‘How Plastic Pollution Harms Our Waterways.’ “This poster contest is a great way to bring more awareness to a critical issue that we are facing today in our environment,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “These posters will not only help inform those who view them, but the simple act of putting together an entry for the contest will help better inform the students of our Town regarding this issue, and this will be knowledge that they will be able to bring forth with them in their lives to help make a difference as they grow up.”

Students should submit a poster to communicate awareness of how items of plastic litter harm our waterways by illustrating the problem of floatables in our waterways. Submissions should be made on large poster paper, with the top three winning posters to be displayed at a Town facility and showcased in a future Town of Oyster Bay Environmental Newsletter. “This contest is being cosponsored by The Waterfront Center and Friends of the Bay to help further protect and preserve the environment. Both of these nonprofit organizations have been a huge asset in helping to protect and preserve our waterways,” said Councilman Imbroto. “I encourage all 4th and 5th grade students in the Town to participate in this program, as it offers an opportunity not only to win amazing prizes, but also an opportunity to become more

educated on the serious issue of plastic pollution in our waterways.” Prizes will be awarded for the top three submissions, with 1st Place receiving a private tour of Oyster Bay Harbor aboard a Friends of the Bay vessel, $200 gift certificate for the Waterfront Center in Oyster Bay, a nautical trivia game, and Friends of the Bay apparel. Submission deadline for the contest is Thursday, April 1, 2021, with winners to be announced on Earth Day, April 22, 2021. New Ground Inc., a local nonprofit that works to break the cycle of homeless for Veterans and families living on Long Island, announced the appointment of Steven Pecorini as President of its Board of Directors. Mr. Pecorini, who joined New Ground’s Board in 2015, succeeds Edward McDougal who served as Board President from 2011-2020. Mr. Pecorini is a pro bono consultant to nonprofits and a retired banking executive. When he left JPMorgan Chase in 2019 after 36 years, Mr. Pecorini’s accomplishments included managing large operating departments, leading financial planning initiatives, and successfully running complex techn-ology projects. He then worked for a year as the Operations Manager with Habitat for Humanity in Nassau County where he performed a wide variety of functions including donor and volunteer management, social media development, and construction coordination. Mr. Pecorini has a MBA from the Columbia Business School and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Williams College. Mr. Pecorini and his wife, Mary, reside in Floral Park and are proud parents of three great sons and a wonderful daughter-in-law, and are brand new grandparents. The Bald Hills Schoolhouse is a one-room Greek Revival Schoolhouse built in 1850. It stands on its original foundation on Horseblock Road in Farmingville and served the Farmingville community until 1929. After 84 years of being closed, the Schoolhouse was re-opened in November 2013 to educate the community through student field trips, history speaker presentations, historic events and now through The Virtual One-Room Schoolhouse.

Councilman Hand Launches Pet Food & Supply Drive in Partnership with LI Cares Councilman Tom Hand announced today that the Town of Oyster Bay will host a Food & Supply Drive in partnership with LI Cares. The drive will take place from March 15th to April 15th with a focus on collecting for the family members most vulnerable to hunger, residents’ pets. Long Island Cares formed Baxter’s Pet Pantry in 2009 to assist in feeding dogs, cats, ferrets, rabbits, caged pets, fish, reptiles and all others considered family members. “Pets truly are members of our family,” said Councilman Hand. “Pet food and supply donations will help furry friends in need, which in turn keeps pets at home with their loved ones. The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to partner with LI Cares to collect generous donations for this worthwhile cause.” The creation of Baxter’s Pet Pantry by Long Island Cares has helped distribute over

one million pounds of pet food, all of which has been donated through pet food drives like this one and corporate donations. “Unfortunately many beloved pets are placed into shelters or given away because families cannot afford the necessary food and supplies,” added Councilman Hand. “When struggling families have to make choices to heat their homes, buy medication or feed their own families, pets can become an afterthought. Pet food drives like this one can be a real lifesaver for both pets and their families.” Those interested in supporting the pet food
