The Board of Education of the Seaford School District has named Dr. Adele Pecora to the position of Superintendent of Schools, effective July 1st, 2017. Dr. Pecora will replace Superintendent Brian Conboy who announced in September his decision to end his career in Seaford after 33 years of service. Dr. Pecora comes to Seaford Schools from the Commack School District where she currently holds the position of Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction
and Assessment K-12. Over the past six years in this capacity, her focus has been to provide access and opportunity for students to acquire 21st century skills necessary for college and career readiness. A lifelong educator, she began her career as a high school social studies teacher and later became a social studies chairperson, a high school assistant principal, and then a director of curriculum and technology. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics from Cornell University, a Master’s Degree in Teaching from Tufts University and a Doctorate in Education Administration from Teachers College, Columbia University. Dr. Pecora is a native and current resident of Massapequa Park, and graduated from Massapequa High School. Her two older children

I remember the day like it was yesterday… which is fairly impressive, considering it was actually 17 years ago, to the day in fact. This momentous occasion of which I speak, on March 8th, 2000, was the date I was told by our high school principal that I was, in fact, “officially” the valedictorian of our senior class. I can’t say the news was a complete shock, as we had all been given informal ranks pending the start of the college application process several months prior. At the time, my guidance counselor had informed my parents and I that all paperwork sent out from the administrative offices would name me as “approximately” first, a fact that I had never even thought to consider up until that very moment. I had always enjoyed school and had accumulated a collection of Honors and Advanced Placement classes
on my transcript by my senior year; but class rank was not something I had ever particularly focused my attention on. I knew it existed, obviously; but most colleges were more concerned with your overall GPA and SAT scores, not your comparison among a class of your peers. As I rounded the corner on that afternoon, en route to our “rotunda” outside the cafeteria, I was startled to find the principal seated there next to one of my friends. “Oh good, you’re here,” he said. Uh oh, I thought. My mind raced, trying to determine what I could have done to warrant this unexpected visit. Next to him, my friend had a sly smile on his face. What is this about? I couldn’t imagine. “I have some news,” he grinned, standing up and extending his hand in congratulations. “It’s official – you’re number one.” And there it was. Twelve years of hard work and

before the February school break. The campaign, coordinated by social worker Sharon Klein, was part of a national movement by the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation, a non-profit
organization aimed at spreading tolerance and consideration for others throughout schools, communities and homes. Each day of the week, students took part in a new theme, such as Manners Monday and
Thank You Tuesday. They listened to announcements over the loudspeaker that encouraged acts of kindness and promoted activities that spread kindness throughout the building. The “Kindness Squad,” made up of students in the fifth-grade Student Council, came to each class while the class was out of the room to put a positive message on each student’s desk. The idea for the Kindness Squad emerged when two fifth-graders, Mary Saporito and Riley Froese, left anonymous messages of kindness in Kerry Hansen’s fifth-grade
classroom one evening in January. Now, they are “the start of a new tradition at the Harbor, thanks to a thoughtful, committed group of fifth-graders,” said Hansen, who advises the Student Council. During “Thank you Tuesday,” students wrote thank you notes to show appreciation to others. Throughout the week, all fifth-grade girls participated in Beautiful Me, a program that empowers girls with confidence by learning to see the beauty within themselves, and gave compliments to their classmates to celebrate
what makes them beautiful inside and out. Students also wrote down random acts of kindness that they performed on paper hearts. The hearts were then placed on a “Kindness Tree” in the lobby. “It was great to see the tree bloom,” Klein said. “We are so happy to be a part of this great week to make the world a little kinder and promote such a positive message. It is something we hope to promote not just during Random Acts Kindness Week but all the time.”
