Pets bring much joy to the lives they touch. So it should come as no surprise that the 2019-2020 National Pet Owners Survey, which was conducted by the American Pet Products Association, found that about 85 million families in the United States own a pet. In Canada, 7.5 million households are home to companion animals, states the PetBacker blog. Pets offer companionship and unconditional love. While they are fitting for any family, seniors may find that having a pet is especially beneficial. The organization A Place for Mom, which helps match families with senior living residences, says pets provide a comfort system that produces measurable health results. Caring for pets and being around them can produce a chemical chain reaction in the brain that may help to lower stress hormones while also increasing production of the feelgood hormone serotonin. This is not the only health benefit pets may provide. A recent study from the Mayo Clinic, which looked at 1,800 people between the ages of 25 and 64 who had healthy hearts, found that almost half owned a dog. Having a dog was likely to spur heart-healthy behaviors, like exercising with the pet, eating well and having ideal blood sugar levels. Pets also provide emotional support and companionship that can help seniors — including those who may be divorced or widowed — feel more secure and happy. The National Poll on Healthy Aging found that, among respondents who had pets, 88 percent said their pets helped them enjoy life, and 86 percent said their pets made them feel loved. Seniors considering getting a pet can explore the many benefits to doing so. • Reduce pain: A 2012 study published in Pain Magazine found therapy dogs provided “significant reduction in pain and emotional distress for chronic pain patients.”

Seaford Athletes Promote Leadership

Six Seaford High School student-athletes, known as leaders on their teams and in others areas of school life, attended a leadership conference earlier this year and now are preparing to host their own. Craig Ackerman, Anna Butler, Sophia Boulukos, Anthony Ippoliti, Nick Luciano and Taylor Sylvester joined their peers from throughout Nassau County at the 16th annual Student-Athletes as Leaders Conference at Hofstra University on Jan. 31. The event was hosted by the by the Nassau County High School Principals Association, Nassau County Physical Education Consortium and the Hofstra School of Education. The six students, along with Sarah Keane and Michael Scimeca, are

organizing a leadership conference at the school on May 29 for underclassman on Seafordâ€™s athletic teams. They say the goal is to help student-athletes who demonstrate leadership abilities to take their skills to the next level. â€œLeadership is an asset you have to earn,â€? Nick said. â€œYou have to show you deserve to be a leader. Itâ€™s an ability that you improve on throughout the years.â€? Sophia said she is looking forward to sharing information she learned at the leadership conference with others in her school. She said one valuable lesson that sticks with her is that for athletes to succeed, mental health is just as important as physical health so team leaders have a responsibility to be inclusive and supportive of all teammates.

â€œBeing a leader is important,â€? she said. â€œYou want to be someone the younger players look up to, on and off the field.â€? Added Craig, â€œIâ€™m now the older kid that they see as a role model.â€? Supporting students in planning for the leadership conference are Director of Physical Education, Health and Athletics Kevin Witt, physical education and health teachers Stephanie Bartkus, Ralph Pascarella and Michael Spreckels, English teachers Justin McCormack and Michael Wimmer, and social studies teachers Jenna Davis and Mike Engelke. In addition to planning the May conference, the high school students will also host leadership workshops for fourth graders at the elementary schools.

A Shakespeare tale with a rock ’n’ roll twist is coming to the Seaford High School stage in early March as the Drama Club will perform “All Shook Up.” The show will feature numerous Elvis songs including “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Jailhouse Rock,” “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Can’t Help Falling in Love” and more. The play, based on William Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night,” takes place during the course of one day in 1955 in a small, unnamed town in the Midwest. Senior Andrew Calvacca stars as Chad, the Elvis-inspired character. Other leading actors include Gabriella Philipp as Natalie, Liam McDonald

as Dennis, Carly Corsitto as Sandra, Tyler Reeves as Dean, Miranda Kelly as Lorraine, Max Newman as Jim, Meredith Muirhead as Sylvia, Buddy Pace as Earle and Emily Schiller as Matilda. Gabriella described “All Shook Up” as a highenergy show with lots of “you don’t know what’s going to happen next” moments. Andrew added that it is a thrill to do the show because Elvis is such a beloved musician. “The music is the best part of the whole show,” he said. “It adds a fun spin on songs people already know.” The show is directed and choreographed by Samantha Gates, with Gina

Salvia serving as musical director, Anthony Romeo as producer, Chris Coniglio as pit conductor, Dan Krueger as sound designer and Grant Weber as set designer. YES Community Counseling Center Receives $9000 Grant Award YES Community Counseling Center is pleased to announce it has received a $9000 Community Partner grant from United Way of Long Island. The funding will support the expansion of delivery services to residents of southeastern and central Nassau County. In addition to enhancing our support services to children and families, this funding will also be allocated toward Commerce Plaza, the Children’s Business Center. While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. In the Middle Ages, brides did not carry flowers, but rather strong-smelling spices and herbs. The rationale was that the herbs and spices would drive away bad luck and evil spirits. Flowers also served another practical purpose. In eras when bathing was a luxury, different flowers and herbs helped mask body odors. It wasn't until the Victorian era, when flowers were used to symbolize romantic love, that they became part of wedding ceremonies, according to Modern Weddings magazine.

The thyroid gland plays an essential role in the human body. According to the online healthcare publishing company Medicine.net, the thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in the front of the neck that produces the hormones that regulate metabolism. When the thyroid gland’s ability to do its job is compromised, the effects can be serious and lead to a host of symptoms that don’t go away. Thyroid conditions vary, and as a result, that can produce their own distinct symptoms. The Harvard Medical School notes that the thyroid can be overactive (hyperthyroidism) or underactive (hypothyroidism). An overactive thyroid will produce too much hormones, while an underactive thyroid won’t produce enough. Symptoms of both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism can overlap, but each condition has its

own unique symptoms as well. What are the symptoms of hyperthyroidism? • Fatigue • Fast heartbeat • Trouble concentrating • Increased appetite • Sweating • Nervousness, restlessness • Unintentional weight loss What are the symptoms of hypothyroidism? • Fatigue • Increased sensitivity to cold • Muscle weakness • Brittle nails and hair • Hoarse voice • Unintentional weight gain The online medical resource Healthline notes that most cases of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism cannot be prevented. For example, hyperthyroidism is often caused by Graves’ disease,

an immune system disorder that’s most common among women. Some peoples’ thyroids have become overactive because they consumed too many foods that contained iodine, such as table salt, fish and seaweed. However, Healthline notes that such instances are rare. While people may not be able to prevent thyroid conditions from developing, they can keep a watchful eye out for any of the aforementioned symptoms of overactive or underactive thyroids. Any such symptoms should be reported to a physician immediately. Medicine.net notes that, in most cases, thyroid disorders can be managed with treatment and are not life-threatening. However, the outlook for people with thyroid conditions is always better when symptoms are reported early.

Be Safe When Lightning Strikes A change in seasons often brings about a change in the weather as well. Seasons marked by increased humidity in the air and warmer temperatures often usher in afternoon or evening thunderstorms. With those thunderstorms come potentially dangerous lightning. The National Weather Service says lightning strikes the United States roughly 25 million times a year, killing an average of 47 people each year. Worldwide, lighting kills as many as 2,000 people every year, states National Geographic. Even though the odds of being struck by lightning are low, certain factors put people at greater risk. Florida is considered the “lightning capital” of the United States, so residents of the Sunshine State should always exercise extreme caution upon seeing lightning. Residents of Alabama, Colorado, North

Carolina, and Texas also must be extra cautious when lightning strikes. To stay safe, remember the mantra, “When thunder roars, go indoors.” In addition, the following precautionary measures can help people stay safe when lightning strikes. •Postpone outdoor activities if the weather forecast calls for thunder-storms. You also can use the 30-30 rule. After you see lightning, start counting to 30. If you hear thunder before you reach 30, go indoors. Suspend activities for at least 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder, offers the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. •Avoid open areas outside. Do not be the tallest object in a field or area. Also, stay away from isolated tall trees, utility poles and towers. •If no shelter is available, crouch low with as little

of your body touching the ground as possible. •Lightning can travel through indoor plumbing, so avoid using water during a thunderstorm. Similarly, lightning can travel through electrical systems, like phones, radios and television reception systems. •A car can be a safe place to stay if no other non-concrete shelter is available. •Recognize that all thunderstorms produce lightning. Just because you can’t see lightning doesn’t mean it’s not there. •Get out of pools or other bodies of water. Water is an excellent conductor of lightning. •The human body does not store electricity, says the Insurance Information Institute. Therefore, if a person is struck, you can safely offer first aid. Lightning is no joke and never something to take lightly.

Polar Bear Plunge Benefit Fundraiser Sunday, March 8 Supervisor Joseph Saladino announces that the Town of Oyster Bay will serve as home to The Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County’s (CP Nassau) 16th Annual Polar Bear Plunge benefit fundraiser on Sunday, March 8, 2020 at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park, Beach and Marina in Oyster Bay, with festivities to begin at noon and the plunge at 1pm. “The Town of Oyster Bay is proud to serve as home this Polar Bear Plunge as it supports the Cerebral Palsy Association and their many outstanding programs and services. I invite everyone

to come out of winter hibernation and join us in this fun and unique plunge into north shore waters. The water may be cold, but the cause is certain to warm your heart,” said Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, who was named the Honorary Chairman of the event. The Polar Bear Plunge festivities will include a DJ, free hot chocolate, coffee, tea, hot dogs, and soup. Raffles will be offered, and children will enjoy many other surprises including Star Wars characters and a dancing Polar Bear. An indoor assembly area will also be available. The event

will be held rain, snow or shine! All proceeds will benefit the more than 1,800 children and adults with disabilities who participate in programs and receive services through the Cerebral Palsy Association of Nassau County. CP Nassau has been making a difference in the lives of individuals with disabilities since 1948. Daylight Saving Time March 8 Most parts of North America will begin Daylight Saving Time on March 8, 2020, at 2:00 a.m., respective to their time zones. In the European Union, “Summer Time” begins at 1:00 a.m. on the last Sunday in March, which this year will be March 29. The change is made at the same absolute time across all time zones respective to Greenwich Mean Time, which also is known as Universal Time.

One reason DST is still practiced in many areas of the world is to push an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening and make better use of this daylight. There are various origin stories linked to DST, including one that involves Benjamin Franklin. DST also has been touted as a way to save resources during times of war or as a means to helping farmers be more prosperous.

However, despite the many proclaimed benefits of DST, there are many detractors who insist that there are no perceived benefits. Some of these DST naysayers say switching the clocks twice a year can negatively affect the body’s natural circadian rhythm. Various efforts both domestically and abroad have been instituted to abolish DST, but as of 2020, it remains on the calendar.
