The Art League of Long Island’s 11th annual “Go APE” Advanced Placement Student Exhibition features 2-D and 3-D works by 140 students from 38 Long Island High Schools. Science Surrounds Them Electricity, chemical reactions, hydropower and jet propulsion were just some of the scientific concepts that students studied for the annual science fair at Seaford Middle School. The presentations were on display in the cafeteria on February 15th, and parents were invited to come see the results. There were 27 projects created by more than 40 students, who could either work individually or in pairs. Each project included a posterboard outlining the problem, hypothesis, experiment and conclusion. Science teachers Amanda Shirreffs and Roseann Zeblisky served as the judges. They noted that many students explored “everyday things” such as how much sugar is in their drinks or which gender produces more electricity. “The purpose was to get students more interested in scientific ideas and

spark their curiosity,” Ms. Shirreffs said. “The students really delved deep into their experiments. It was great to see them doing extra science in everyday life.” The sixth-grade winners were Ryan D’Orio and Justin Cettina for their experiment, “Pop Your Top.” Leading the seventh-grade entrants were Stephen Karounos

When I graduated from high school, I was given the noted Dr. Seuss book, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go,” as a symbolic gesture of good luck toward any and all future pursuits. I since came to learn that this particular gift has been somewhat of a tradition for those moving onward and upward in life - no matter the age. Of course, the places outlined in the magical land of Seuss are not so much literal; but, rather, a figurative representation of the adventures which await those on the brink of adulthood, the endless potential for exploration and the Great Places which exist just over yonder. The poem reads like a veritable how-to, designed to assist in navigating the twists and turns life is sure to reveal in the years to come. Nearly 20 years beyond this stepping stone, the words

ring just as true: “Step with care and great tact… and remember that Life’s A Great Balancing Act.” Indeed it is. I recently listened to a podcast which analyzed the age-old query of whether happiness leads to success, or vice versa. Like the chicken/ egg debate, there is of course no concrete answer; however, most research seems to suggest that happiness is the starting point from which the greatest success blossoms. To be in a positive state is to have a productive, constructive mindset, making growth that much easier. Delving deeper into the topic, it was stated that those who attempt to find that tedious work/life “balance” are often misdirected in their goal. In reality, these elements will never truly exist in the perfect proportion we strive for, as our existence - and all the elements which affect

it - are in a continuous state of flux. Rather, the objective should be to find a place of fulfillment within, making the necessary adjustments along the way as we navigate those same twists and turns predicted by Dr. Seuss all those years ago. Taking this lesson into a geographic territory, it was recently brought to my attention that the passport I obtained some five years ago is nearly halfway to its expiration date, having been used precisely once on my very first international flight - first flight anywhere, in fact - to the Emerald Isle. Where to next? The fact is, it doesn’t really matter. Anywhere will do, so long as it brings pleasure and adventure and a newfound sense of discovery. Your mountain is waiting. So . . . get on your way!

Six students from Seaford High School have received scholarships for Academic Excellence from New York State. The award, presented by the Higher Education Services Corporation, recognizes seniors for their academic accomplishments. The recipients are Jordan Ament, Andrew Chirico, Connor Kelly, Annalore LaGrassa, Jake Masters and

Allison Prete. They were selected based on their performance on a select set of Regents exams. All of the honorees will receive scholarship money for the next four years provided they attend college in New York. Jordan, the valedictorian of Seaford High School’s Class of 2018, will receive $1,500 annually. Andrew, Connor, Annalore, Jake

and Allison will each earn $500 per year. “These seniors have earned the highest Regents scores on a number of those exams,” said Principal Scott Bersin, who congratulated the recipients. “The New York State Academic Excellence scholarship is extremely significant.”

Strong Finish

Seaford High School’s new Science Olympiad team made an impression at its first competition with a first-place finish in the Small Schools category. The young scientists took part in the regional competition at Wantagh High School on February 3rd, which featured 48 teams from 20 high schools. The 13 students from Seaford entered into several different events testing their science mettle

including written tests and hands-on challenges. Max Newman and Jessica Kofod finished fourth in Write It, Do It. In that event, one student had to write a description of an object and how to build it, and his or her teammate had to construct the object from the description. Britney Sirota received special recognition in the helicopter event, in which she built a rubber bandpowered device.

“It was a great experience and it was great to see other schools come together for such a nice scholastic event,” said Jessica, a 10thgrader. “We’re excited to go back next year.” Science teacher Mary Simons, the club’s adviser, said that students spent all of January preparing for their inaugural competition. She commended the group for their hard work and competitive spirit.

HOPE CHILDREN’S FUND

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! For decades, people have done what they can to avoid these unseemly organisms, thinking that exposure to germs is the single-best way to get and remain sick. Certainly, there are germs that a person would be wise to avoid. However, not all germs must be avoided. Germs are tiny organisms that can enter the body through open cuts, the mouth, the nose and the eyes. Germs are found all over the world. The four main types of germs include bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoa. Bacteria are a type of germ that often get a bad rap but actually may have beneﬁts that outweigh their negatives.

Bacteria are tiny, one-celled creatures that get nutrients from their environments to live. In some instances, that environment is the human body. Bacteria can reproduce inside and outside of the body. While bacteria that cause repeated infections might be considered bad, there actually are a host of good bacteria. Such bacteria help people digest food and protect against gastrointestinal upset,

such as diarrhea. Some bacteria may help people fight off illnesses caused by other bacteria or viruses, says research published in the journal Best Practice & Research Clinical Gastroenterology. Beneficial bacteria may help stimulate the immune system so that the body is better able to fight off diseases naturally. People frequently overlook good bacteria in an effort to eradicate bad bacteria, and that can have serious detriments. Unfortunately, the “antibacterial” products available for cleaning and medicines used for treating bacterial illnesses do not discriminate between good and bad germs. They simply eradicate them all. Heathline says that this can create an imbalance of bacteria in the body that may lead to harmful bacteria taking over. Harmful bacteria also may evolve to resist common treatments because of the overuse of antibacterial and antimicrobial medicines and products. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that antimicrobial agents have been used for the last 70 years to treat patients with infectious diseases.

Although they’ve helped treat illnesses, these drugs have enabled the organisms they’re meant to destroy to adapt to them, making the drugs less effective. Some bacteria are even resistant to certain antibacterial drugs. The CDC says each year in the United States at least two million people become infected with bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics — with at least 23,000 people dying as a result of these infections. Various medical sources urge that regular handwashing with plain soap is enough for cleansing. Consuming foods with naturally occurring helpful organisms, such as yogurt, chocolate, feta cheese, pickles and dark chocolate, can help increase the levels of good bacteria in the body. Taking a probiotic supplement also may help, although researchers at the Cleveland Clinic report that there is not enough proof to say for sure. People should speak with their doctors before taking probiotics or other steps to increase bacteria to make sure they are a wise decision for each individual.

When undiagnosed, PAD can lead to further complications, including increased risk for heart attack, stroke and coronary artery disease. Even amputation of a limb may be necessary. However, PAD is preventable when taking a few steps to improve diet. According to new research published by the American Heart Association, eating more fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of developing PAD, which affects an estimated 8.5 million people

in the United States alone. Researchers examined dietary data from roughly 3.7 million men and women, with an average age of 65. Approximately 6.3 percent of the subjects had PAD, and 29.2 percent indicated they ate three or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day. The discovery was those who reported eating three or more daily servings of fruits and vegetables had an 18 percent lower risk of PAD than those who reported eating less of these foods. The association between fruit and vegetable consumption and lower PAD risk remained even after accounting for age, gender, race, smoking status and various cardiovascular risk factors. Saturated fats, trans-fats and sodium can contribute to the formation of plaques that lead to PAD. Replacing these foods with more vegetables and fruits that are naturally lower in saturated fats can help, as can increasing dietary ﬁber consumption. One way to incorporate these types of foods is to adhere to a Mediterranean diet, which offers high proportions of legumes, fruits, vegetables; moderate amounts of ﬁsh and dairy; and limited meat and meat products. Peripheral artery disease can be a warning sign of cardiovascular trouble. Altering one’s diet may help naturally prevent or treat this condition.

Because they are drugfree alternatives, they can be handy for those worried about antihistamines making them drowsy or reacting with other drugs. Neti pots and other nasal irrigation systems use saline to moisten and clear out nasal passages to promote drainage of sinus cavities. However, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, using these devices improperly can increase one’s risk of infection. CBS News says that neti pots have even been linked to the deadly Naegleria fowleri, which is otherwise known as the “braineating” amoeba.

The World Health Organization says that one in four people in the world will be affected by mental or neurological disorders in their lives. Roughly 450 million people currently suffer from such conditions, which puts mental disorders among the leading causes of ill health and disability worldwide.

The Mayo Clinic says CBT talk therapy is performed in a structured setting, with a limited number of sessions. CBT identiﬁes negative thinking so that challenging situations can be viewed more clearly and perceptions changed. While it is a tool in treating mental health disorders, anyone can beneﬁt from CBT, especially those looking to cope with stress or other hurdles.

Mental health is not something people may feel comfortable discussing. Problems may go untreated for years, and some individuals may use selfmedicating behaviors such as drinking alcohol or using illegal drugs to alleviate their symptoms. Others continue to persist with illnesses when they do not have to. Cognitive behavioral therapy is one of the more successful methods to address mental health issues.

Cognitive behavioral therapy was developed by psychiatrist Aaron Beck in the 1960s. Beck was doing psychoanalysis at the time and discovered there was a link between thoughts and feelings. Beck discovered people weren’t always aware of automatic thoughts that popped up in their minds, particularly those negative in nature. By identifying these thoughts, a client could overcome certain difﬁculties.

The National Association of CognitiveBehavioral Therapists deﬁnes CBT as a general term for a classiﬁcation of therapies with certain similarities. It does not exist as a distinct therapeutic technique. CBT is a short-term, goaloriented psychotherapy treatment that takes a practical form to problem-solving, advises Psych Central. The power is in the hands of the person engaging in the therapy. The therapist simply provides the ideas to get started. CBT is used to treat a wide range of issues, including insomnia, anxiety, depression, alcohol abuse, relationship problems and more. The process involves

CBT is a balance between placing personal meaning on things and situations as well as the relationship between problems. Many therapists personalize CBT to meet the needs and personality of their patients. Individuals who prefer a nonpharmaceutical approach to treating their mental health condition may ﬁnd CBT can be helpful. Stress or uncomfortable feelings may arise, but therapists can work to avoid uncomfortable situations. Finding a therapist with whom they feel comfortable can help people make the most of CBT.

Seaford Middle School Principal Dan Smith has been named Administrator of the Year by the Council of Administrators and Supervisors in recognition of his educational leadership. CAS is the largest professional organization of school administrators and supervisors on Long Island with more than 1,300 members. Mr. Smith was nominated for the award by Seaford Harbor Elementary School Principal Thomas Burke and middle school guidance counselor Stacey Ranzie. “Mr. Smith is a person who recognizes the good

school assistant principal and high school English teacher in the Glen Cove City School District. During his tenure at Seaford Middle School, math instructional time has increased for sixthgraders, more eighthgraders are taking accelerated science classes and a music keyboard lab has been added. The school now participates in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, and this year the technology program for eighth-graders was redesigned to include a half-year robotics course. “We’ve done a lot in eight years,” said Mr. Smith, who shares the credit with his middle school team. “What makes the building successful is the faculty and staff. I’m lucky enough to be steering the ship.” Mr. Smith, who said he is very humbled and appreciative to be chosen as Administrator of the Year, will be presented with his award at the March 8 delegate assembly. CAS president Albert Voorneveld said of the honoree, “His leadership in the field of education is an example for all.”
