Six Seaford High School seniors were awarded New York State Academic Excellence scholarships for demonstrating high academic success on state Regents exams. Danielle Calderaro received a $1,500 scholarship, which is awarded to one student in each high school in the state. Katherine Butler, Michael Fox, Christopher de la Bastide, Dana Laws and Victoria Prodan each received a $500 scholarship. The awards are to be used at colleges or universities in New York State and are renewable for up to four academic

years of undergraduate study or five academic years if a program requires five years, according to the state education department guidelines. “Congratulations to these students, their families and all of the many Seaford High School faculty members who worked with them over the years to support their academic success,” said Scott Bersin, principal of Seaford High School.

Random Thoughts By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As if navigating the roads this winter wasn’t hazardous enough with the snow and ice and freezing rain, we now have a new obstacle to contend with – the vast wasteland of potholes cropping up on every corner and parkway ramp. Try attempting to slow down as your headlights catch a glimpse of the crater before you, just waiting to devour a tire or two. One more time – is it spring yet? At least spring training has finally arrived, and with it the not entirely unexpected announcement

from Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter that this season will be his final year playing baseball. A class act until the end, Jeter took to his Facebook page to write a heartfelt message of thanks and appreciation to his fans, his teammates, his family and friends. He will leave the Yankees at the top of his game, a surefire first-ballot Hall of Famer with a legacy the likes of which will not be seen again. Speaking of, remember all those long lost friends you thought you would never see again? Well, thanks to social networking, virtual reunions have become fairly

common. Sure, there’s plenty of useless material to navigate through; but if you learn to utilize these sites properly, the odds of reconnecting with someone are pretty likely. Everything in moderation, right? That’s the mentality you need to adopt for spring – moderation – with diet, exercise, everything. Those bathing suits that have been cropping up in every department store? They’re not going away anytime soon. Better crawl out of that winter state of hibernation and greet the brand new season right around the corner… it’s just over the horizon, past the potholes.

In celebration of 35 years of service to the community in providing diabetes education and support to individuals with diabetes and their families, WinthropUniversity Hospital’s Diabetes Education Center will host an interactive night of food, fun and fine dining with Celebrity Chef Tom Schaudel. The event, which will feature a cooking demonstration along with a delicious three-course meal, will take place on Monday, March 10th, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. at Jewel, located in The Atrium Room, at 400 Broadhollow Rd. in Melville. “Thirty-five years of service to our community is certainly a momentous milestone for Winthrop’s Diabetes Education Center,” said Lynne Chimon, MS, RD, BC-ADM, CDN, CDE, Director of Winthrop’s Diabetes Education Center. “We are pleased to partner with Chef Tom Schaudel on what is promised to be an enjoyable and informative event for all those living with diabetes, their friends and loved ones.” The cost for the event is $40 per person. As the Seaford School District prepares to unveil its proposed 2014-2015 school budget to the community, residents are urged to attend the upcoming public budget discussion meetings to raise questions or concerns, and become better informed about the budget process. The meetings are scheduled for February 27th, March 6th, March 19th and March 27th in Seaford Manor Elementary School’s A.P. Room, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The

budget is expected to be adopted on March 27th and a public budget hearing is slated for May 8th. The budget vote is May 20th. Moving into the third year of the state property tax cap, the amount of money school districts are allowed to raise through property taxes cannot exceed two percent, excluding certain allowances, or the rate of inflation as indicated by the consumer price index, whichever is lower. Residents should understand that although the property tax cap

imposes a limit on the district’s overall tax levy, individual property taxes can fluctuate either up or down, depending on changes made in assessed value by the Nassau County Department of Assessment. The Board of Trustees of the Seaford Public Library, Town of Hempstead, County of Nassau, State of New York, pursuant to the Education Law of the State of New York, has duly adopted a motion designating the SEAFORD PUBLIC LIBRARY as the sole location for voting by all persons entitled to vote in the Seaford Union Free School District.
