Olympic Medalist Promotes Reading, Persevering At Harbor

An Olympic silver medalist had some words of wisdom for students at Seaford Harbor Elementary School. Diver Andrew Capobianco spoke to third, fourth and fifth graders at Harbor during a virtual assembly on Feb. 10. Mr. Capobianco earned a silver medal in in the men’s 3-meter synchronized springboard dive at last year’s summer Olympics

in Tokyo. He attended elementary school in neighboring Wantagh, before moving to North Carolina at age 13. February is Pick a Reading Partner month at Harbor and this year’s theme is Going for the Gold. Mr. Capobianco read “Stone Soup” to students, a book about a community that comes together with their talents to create the most delicious soup.

He then talked about persistence and thinking flexibly, Harbor’s February Habit of Mind, and how those attributes prepared him for competition. The assembly concluded with a virtual question and answer session, with Harbor students asking him about his preparation, experience and love of diving.

GUSTAVSON SELECTED FOR VOCAL COMPETITON - Connie Gustavson, a seventh grader at Seaford Middle School, is a finalist in the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra’s annual Vocal and Concerto Competition, and will perform on March 30 at The Congregational Church of Huntington. She is both a member of the middle school band and chorus, and joined the MYO Choir following her successful audition in 2019. Only four young musicians from across Long Island were chosen to compete in the vocal finalists division for grades 4-8. Corinne’s planned song is “I Know Things Now” by Lilla Crawford. Heckscher And Valley Stream State Parks Accepting Applications For 2022 Cricket Field Use

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that on Thursday, February 24, 2022, at 11:00 AM the Long Island State Park Region will hold a virtual lottery to select permittees for use of cricket fields at Heckscher State Park in East Islip and Valley Stream State Park in Valley Stream. The lottery will be conducted via WebEx and the specific details will be shared with all applicants. Permits for the use of Cricket Fields at Heckscher State Park will be valid Saturdays and

Sundays from April 9, 2022, through September 18, 2022, excluding blackout dates, from 8:00 AM to sunset. Permits for the use of Cricket Field at Valley Stream State Park will be valid Sundays from April 10, 2022, through September 18, 2022, excluding blackout dates, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. MANOR MATHEMATICIANS MAKE A POSITIVE IMPACT - It was a record-breaking year at Seaford Manor Elementary School, which continued its annual tradition of raising money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital with a math-a-thon. This year, 85 students participated in the event by completing grade-specific math activity books. Families of students who participated raised money on their own and made a donation, which totaled $9,456, more than double the school’s goal. It was the highest total ever, according to math teacher John Berry, who said that the matha-thon has been taking place for at least 10 years. The world is celebrating the spirit of competition at the winter Olympics in Beijing, and students at Seaford Harbor and Seaford Manor elementary schools are doing the same in their respective gymnasiums. Harbor students are taking part in a GaGa Ball tournament, with four

playing pits created in the gym. Students try to earn medals for the countries they are representing. Physical education teacher Suzanne Mooney said that students are encouraged to wear the colors of their countries on competition days. At Manor, the gym has been set up to host several

events based on actual Olympic sports such as curling, luge, skeleton and speed skating. During each class, students are assigned to a team to represent one of four countries – Canada, England, Jamaica and Sweden – and love to check the updated medal count every day.

The All Kids Fair is pleased to announce that this year’s children’s expo will be taking place in person at a terrific new venue. The 11th annual All Kids Fair will be on Sunday, April 3, from 10-4:30, at Samanea New York Mall, formerly The Source Mall, at 1504 Old Country Road in Westbury. Since 2011, the All Kids Fair has been known for being a fun day for kids and their families to spend time together while also learning about opportunities for Long Island-based companies and organizations of interest to them. In 2020, this was run as a virtual event, complete with exhibitors, many interactive classes, and even a virtual petting zoo, with kids “interacting” with the animals over a Zoom-like interface. Its mission strives to make our island a better place for all of us to live, work and raise a family. FCA’s original orphanage, the Temporary Home for Children, was founded in 1884. Louisa Lee Schuyler, great-granddaughter of Alexander Hamilton, spearheaded the establishment of the orphanage. During this upcoming Women’s History Month, Family & Children’s Association will be honoring Louisa Lee Schuyler’s vision by joining forces with some of the most influential female philanthropists and business owners across Long Island with its inaugural Long Island Women in Philanthropy Breakfast & Fashion Show. Councilman Hand Invites Residents To Apply For Picnic Permits Online Oyster Bay Town Councilman Tom Hand announced that residents are invited to apply for picnic permits online at www. oysterbaytown.com/ picnic. As a part of the Town’s commitment to digitizing services for the convenience of all, these online reservations are valid for picnics at Marjorie R. Post Community Park in Massapequa, Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and Beach in Oyster Bay, Harry Tappen Beach and Marina in Glenwood Landing, SyossetWoodbury Community Park, and Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Park. “Our beautiful Town Parks are the perfect

location for a family, school, or community group outing set in the great outdoors. Each location, from Teddy Roosevelt Beach in Oyster Bay to Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa, offers something unique for residents to enjoy,” Councilman Hand said. “Thanks to the hard work of our Parks Department, the process to apply for a picnic permit has now been streamlined to increase convenience and accessibility for residents.” Picnic Permits are required for groups of 25 or more at all Town of Oyster Bay picnic pavilion locations and include exclusive use of the permitted area from

9:00 AM - 6:00 PM on the reservation date. Some locations are covered, have access to water, and permit barbequing. Second Graders Take Electrical Safety Seriously Second graders at Seaford Harbor Elementary School have been declared safety sleuths. Through a program with PSEG Long Island, students watched videos and completed safety workbooks in which they learned how to be safe around electricity in their homes. Children learned about the beneficial uses

of electricity but also the potential risks. By completing the workbooks, they identified potential dangers and came away with greater knowledge on protecting themselves, their friends, their pets and their homes. Second grade teacher Jessica Koudelka said that children use a lot of technology, which is powered by electricity, so

it is important that they learn how to use it safely. As a culminating activity, each student made a safety sleuth poster. Five posters from each second grade class were entered into a contest hosted by PSEG and the winning entries will be displayed in a virtual museum.
