Supervisor Anthony J. Santino announced today that the Town of Hempstead is actively recruiting lifeguards for the 2017 pool and beach season. Interested candidates can attend a screening program at Echo Park in West Hempstead on any one of the following three Saturdays: May 13th, May 20th and May 27th from 7 to 9:30 a.m. Lifeguard salaries start at $15 per hour. “We’re actively seeking to recruit lifeguards for our busy beach and pool seasons,” Santino said. “If you are looking for a great place to work this summer,

Seaford Manor Elementary School students were introduced to a story that melted their hearts just days before Valentine’s Day. During a school-wide assembly, Assistant Principal Mary-Ellen Kakalos read “Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch” by Eileen Spinelli. The school’s February “Book of the Month” celebrates kindness and empathy for others as a giant candy-filled heart is delivered to Mr. Hatch on Valentine’s Day with a note
that read, “Somebody loves you.” This gesture changes the way Mr. Hatch interacts with his neighbors and co-workers, but later sadly discovers the heart was delivered to him by mistake. Nevertheless, the community is still enamored by Mr. Hatch’s positive actions within the community after her received the candy. After the read aloud, students pondered questions about Mr. Hatch’s feelings, his actions and how the community supported
him. The book talk extended into a “Pay it Forward” activity led by social worker Jennifer DeMieri. Students were asked to write something kind on a cutout heart. Once all the hearts were collected, she created a “Hallway of Hearts” in the school corridor. The Hallway of Hearts serves as a reminder to students of the many ways kindness can be extended to others, fostering a positive school environment.
The Cubmaster was Jim Carver. Winners from Pack 581 will go on to compete in the Theodore Roosevelt Council’s District Derby in March. Board Room Dedicated Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph S. Saladino (center) recently joined the staff of the Hagedorn Little Village School in Seaford for the dedication of the school’s new Founder’s Board Room in honor of Dr. Barbara Feingold and the late Dr. Caryl Bank. Since its inception in 1969, the Little Village School has been an
organization dedicated to providing the finest educational and therapeutic services for infants and young children with developmental disabilities. In honor of the occasion, Supervisor Saladino commended the staff and supporters of the Hagedorn Little Village School and joined the staff in posthumously celebrating
the life and achievements of Dr. Caryl Bank. Dr. Bank’s efforts throughout the history of the school have touched lives of many people in the community. Additionally, Supervisor Saladino presented a citation to Dr. Barbara Feingold, Co-Founder of Hagedorn Little Village School, for generously committing herself to children in need.

And just like that, the snow has melted and signs of spring have begun to sprout here and there, signaling the end of hibernation and the beginning of so many wonderful things in this second season of the year. Of course, we are not completely out of the frozen woods yet; but it certainly is nice to feel the warmth of the sun in the month of February nonetheless. Last year, March brought with it a robin’s nest, complete with four perfect blue eggs, to my grandparents’ house. I often wonder if one of the babies will return this spring to lay its own batch of eggs and continue the line of fuzzy birds born in that backyard. So many wonderful memories took place in that very spot… how fitting that new life
should be born there as well. I recently picked up a bunch of tulips and roses while shopping, deciding that the post-holiday season barrenness of my apartment could use a little splash of color to liven things up. It’s amazing what a bowl of flowers can do to improve the atmosphere of a room… how I do love to snip and arrange fresh blooms in vases on occasion. It’s times like these that I wish I had a real garden of my own to tend; but alas, decks are really only conducive to the standard potted plant. I am certainly looking forward to heading out this spring and exploring the beaches and parks of Long Island as they come back to life. Aside from the exercise these random, meandering strolls encourage, they
also give me the alwayswelcome opportunity to continue to explore my love of photography. It doesn’t matter how many times I have visited a particular place; there is always a new angle to be found, another pretty sight to document. In about a month’s time, my hope is to have my new website up and ready to launch, featuring some of these scenic snapshots from the last several years, perhaps with some prints and calendars available for purchase. In the interim, I have created a public Instagram account, so please feel free to “follow” me @jlynnspj, take a look around and stay tuned for the official launch of my site, www. SnapshotsAndSilhouettes.com. Springtime is the season of beginnings – no harm in getting a head start!

Special Donation Katie McHugh, daughter of Anthony & Lisa McHugh, is a 9 year-old girl who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. When her parents, Anthony & Lisa, decided to sell their house in Seaford, they had mentioned to their Realtor, Traci Chiarello Romagnesi,
RealtyConnectUSA, that their daughter has Type 1 diabetes. Traci’s friend Brian Perino also has a daughter with type 1 diabetes and he is a board member for JDRF. JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Traci decided she wanted
to donate $1,000 from the proceeds of the sale of their house to JDRF in honor of their daughter Katie. Traci then presented a check to Brian Perino, JDRF Board member, for $1000 in honor of Katie McHugh and the McHugh family.

She said she is proud to have girls in the talked about ways to handle cyberbullying situations, while our Social Worker provided resources and strategies for this challenge that students face every day.” Barry Tech Physical Therapy Aide teacher Dr. Michelle Fattore was instrumental in bringing the program to the school. “I think it’s important to remind students of their responsibility when they post anything on the internet,” said Dr. Fattore. “They need to know the ramifications of posting negative comments, as well as the resources available to them if they become a victim of cyberbullying.” Dr. Poll opened the session by reminding the students that, “Barry Tech is a bully-free zone and the healthcare classes are passionate about stomping out bullying.” The workshop launched a school-wide campaign. Barry Tech a bully-free zone. “Barry Tech is a safe environment where I feel safe and I can express myself,” said Barry Tech Physical Therapy Aide and Rehabilitation Medicine student Veronica Scruggs from the Bethpage UFSD. Fellow Barry Tech Physical Therapy Aide and Rehabilitation Medicine students agree: “Barry Tech is a bully-free zone, because you meet people you have never met before. This allows you to have a fresh start and create a new community for yourself,” said Samantha Zizzo, Bethpage UFSD. Anisha Sander, a Freeport UFSD student sums it up, “Without love, there is no family in Barry Tech. Over 100 Nassau BOCES Barry Tech students from the school’s Healthcare Classes came together recently for an anticyberbully workshop. Cyberbullying remains a hot topic since recent reports claim that 43% of teenagers have been bullied online over the past year. These statistics prompted students and staff to view the movie, Cyberbully, and reflect on how the issue effects them in their everyday digital lives. Students referred to a specially created Movie Viewing Guide as they watched the video, which was followed by a discussion led by the school’s social worker, Nancy Tuck. The students were given a list of resources and information was distributed about cyber bullying, its effects on others and what to do if you are a victim. “The film sparked conversation among our students,” said Barry Tech Assistant Principal Dr. William Poll. “Students

Seaford School District benefit from the program Warren and Jackie Hance have created through the Hance Family Foundation to carry on their children’s legacy. “I thought it was important for the girls to walk away knowing that what they feel inside, other girls feel the same,” Schozer said. “The most important goal of the program is for the
girls to feel good about themselves.” The program was presented at no cost to the district. It is completely grant-funded through the Hance Family Foundation. Teachers who were trained were given free kits with all the materials they need to move the program forward in the district.
