Poets’ Corner Presented by South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers

A Presence Unseen By: John McGowan

In the midst of my pain, I reached for something not there Yet I felt a presence previously unaware Faith had dwindled with each passing ache Yet I held on to the Spirit within me awake There is a fight each of us must endure Like floating through a wall and finding a cure What was it that carried me above the midst of my pain? Doubtless a Force, one hard to explain.

Third-graders at Seaford Harbor Elementary School became the teachers, as they shared their newfound technology skills with fifth-graders. Students in Nancy Kempner’s class wrote persuasive essays, then created videos to support their arguments. Many picked school-related topics such as the importance of treating each other kindly or keeping the school clean. Using iPads, they recorded scenes around the school and created animations. To create their final products, the students could choose one of a variety of apps including Book Creator, Puppet Edu, Morfo and Toontastic. The third-graders then visited Peter Lutz’s fifth-grade

class to show off their work and teach their older counterparts how to make their videos. Teacher Kristina Lopez, who worked with the third-graders to create the videos, brought writing instruction to the next level. She said students spent more than a month on their writing assignments, writing about multiple topics and

completing several drafts before the final paper. Videos then took about two weeks to complete. “It was fun for the students and they really got into their projects,” she said. “Once we turned their writing into videos, it had a much stronger meaning for them, as it further helped them prove their points.”

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance

to succeed. Below, you will see a photo of Ian Mugambi, a 12 year-old boy in need of a sponsor. Ian lost his mother and sister and currently resides at this orphanage in Meru. For further details on mentoring Ian or another child, please contact Aida Mann at AidaMann@optonline.com. Upon sponsorship, you will receive a photo and bio of the child you chose to sponsor. You will be able to write letters or send e-mails directly to the child to provide them with hopeful messages! Kevin and Aida often travel to visit the orphanage and welcome sponsors to come along so they can meet firsthand the child they sponsor. Growing up on Long Island, I realize it is easy to be misled into thinking everyone lives as we do, but that is not the case. Ian is much more than just someone in the photo on this page; he is one of many people across the world who is reaching out for help. Although there are plenty of ways we can spend $1 a day, using that money to mentor a child in need is truly a priceless experience!

Seaford Manor Elementary School kindergartners declared themselves “100 days smarter” on February 9th when they celebrated the 100th day of the school year. The youngsters dressed up as if they were a century old and began the day by parading around the building as their older peers watched and cheered.

Over the public address system, “The Charleston” played, a song that is nearly 100 years old. Throughout the day, they participated in various math and literacy activities centered on 100. At home, the children made posters with 100 objects, such as cotton balls, Legos and stickers, that adorned the walls of the kindergarten hallway for the special day.

“They got to be the stars of the school, and they got to count to 100, which is something we love for kindergartners to know how to do,” said teacher Dawn Plotnick. Building Their Skills Kindergartners at Seaford Harbor Elementary School are learning the basics of storytelling as they begin to develop writing skills that will last a lifetime. This year, the Seaford School District has adopted Writer’s Workshop through Columbia University Teacher’s College to create a more personalized and engaging experience for students.
