Staff from the pupil personnel services department visited sixth grade classes to share a video about P.S. I Love You Day. They also discussed the negative impacts of spreading rumors, and students learned how words can be misinterpreted during a game of telephone. On Feb. 9, students and staff were encouraged to wear purple, which is the color that symbolizes P.S. I Love You Day and the message of spreading kindness. The PPS department made sure everyone was included, as they placed sticky notes with positive messages around the school and wrote kind letters to teachers and staff. “Mental health is incredibly important, so we’re bringing awareness to that,” said social worker Amanda Robilotto, who coordinated P.S. The purple decorations around Seaford Middle School on Feb. 9 emphasized to students that they can have the greatest impact on their school climate. To mark P.S. I Love You Day, an initiative devoted to mental health awareness, there were purple balloons, chains and hearts filling the hallways as a visual reminder. During A.S.K. advisory sessions the week prior, students learned about the history and meaning of P.S. I Love You Day, as well as actions they can take to spread kindness. Each student then wrote a positive message on a purple heart, which were hung throughout the building including on a kindness wall, outside the main office and in the center staircase. Members of the Service Club helped with the decorating.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced that applications are now available for families to add the names of loved ones to the Town of Oyster Bay’s 9/11 Walls of Honor which recognize all those with a connection to the Town who gave their lives and succumbed in their battle against 9/11 related cancers and illness. Each September, the Town unveils newly inscribed names into the Walls of Honor which recognize the family members, friends and neighbors lost to this toxic legacy. Supervisor Saladino stated, “We remember and give thanks to those who ran into danger in order to help the victims of a cowardly act of terror. This includes first responders, downtown workers,
residents, students and so many others with cancer certified to be 9/11-related. The events of 9/11 continue to take our heroes and survivors – and members of our community will continue to face darker days ahead. We watch each week as more of these heroes pass, in an everincreasing and unending number. Just as many of these rescue and recovery heroes raced to the Towers the first minute the plane hit, and stayed until the last brick was turned, their memorial stands with and lead us to those we lost that tragic Tuesday morning.” Reports from the World Trade Center Health program indicate that we are approaching a terrible milestone, in which approximately 43,000 people are being treated for medical problems and
10,000 people have suffered cancers linked to the toxic exposure at Ground Zero. More than 2,500 responders and others affected have succumbed to their illness. The 9/11 Walls of Honor were constructed under an initiative led by Supervisor Saladino, the Town Board and a volunteer committee that includes retired FDNY EMS Lieutenant Bill Gleason, Retired NYPD Detective Tom Luberto, Deacon Dave White, Jericho Fire Commissioner Frank Sammartano, North Massapequa Fire Commissioner Ralph Raymond, Massapequa Fire Commissioner Justin McCaffrey and Rescue & Recovery Worker Joseph Pinto. After reviewing restaurant etiquette in class, students then put it into practice. It felt like I was in France.” Patricia Foley, the lead teacher for the World Language department, said that authentic cultural experiences are an important aspect to learning a new language.

Milestone Moment At Manor: 100 Days Smarter school in September, they have now reached the 100day mark. To celebrate, the youngsters jumped forward about 95 years and dressed up as 100-year-olds. They
paraded through the school in their wigs, mustaches, dresses, suits and pearl necklaces as students in the upper graders cheered them on. The kindergarten
hallway was lined with 100-day posters, an annual tradition for the centennial day. Each student made a themed poster at home, featuring 100 similar objects or stickers.
Students rotated among the kindergarten classrooms, with each hosting a different activity. They made 100-day crowns, read books about the 100th day of school
and did 100 exercises. On a large paper circle, students stuck on 100 smaller circles, with the finished product resembling a gumball machine.

The Rules About Leap Years It’s widely accepted that a year is 365 days long. However, that statement is not entirely accurate. It takes Earth more than 365 days (365.24223 days to be precise) to orbit the sun. A calendar cannot accommodate that small distinction every year. To ensure that seasons do not start drifting from the difference between the Earth’s rotation and the time it takes to get around the sun, leap years were established to keep the calendar more consistent and working like clockwork. The first
modern leap year took place in 1752. Certain guidelines were established to determine which years would be leap years. A leap year typically arrives every four years. However, in terms of end-of-century years, they must be divisible by 400. That is why the year 2000 was a leap year but 1900 was not, according to Royal Museums Greenwich. This approach is a partially foolproof plan since there still may be very small discrepancies in time. Leap seconds
have been added to keep time ticking correctly at various points throughout the years. This occurred on December 31 in the years 2005, 2008, and 2012, and also on June 30, 2015. In terms of adding a day to the calendar for the leap year, it is placed in February, which already is the shortest month. While February is typically 28 days, in leap years the month features 29 days. A leap year next occurs in February 2024, and then again in 2028, 2032, and 2036.
