When taxes are due, Receiver Pravato has encouraged residents to make their payments on line, where Receiver Pravato arranged for taxpayers to remit payment via eCheck at a reduced fee. Residents can alternatively pay via credit card online, where a third-party vendor charges a processing fee, or mail their payments to the Receiver’s Office. Additionally, residents can also pay in person at new walkup windows at both Town Hall North in Oyster Bay and Town Hall South in Massapequa. They are open from 9:00 am to 4:45 pm for check or money order payments.

Oyster Bay Town Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato recently announced that New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo has granted a deadline extension for the payment of the first half of General taxes - from February 10th until March 12h - without the imposition of a penalty. In early January, Receiver Pravato requested this extension as Nassau County Department of Assessment failed to provide a timely tax warrant to towns throughout the County. The data provided by Nassau County Executive Laura Curran’s Department of Assessment was also riddled with errors and inaccurate information, causing hundreds of homeowners to be overtaxed throughout the Town of Oyster Bay and thousands more throughout Nassau County. Receiver of Taxes Pravato stated, “With the tremendous financial

Supervisor Don Clavin and Town Clerk Kate Murray recently announced the expansion of the Town of Hempstead’s “stickerless” and “contactless” commuter parking permit application process to townoperated train station lots at Baldwin, Merrick, Bellmore, Wantagh and Seaford – offering an essential service to residents in a more safe and efficient manner in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Starting April 1st, commuters who park at these lots will no longer have to place stickers on the back of their vehicles, as enforcement will be conducted via a license plate scanning technology. This program expansion comes after a hugely successful test run conducted over the past six months at the Oceanside train station. “The expansion of this streamlined parking permit service is just another example of the many ways that the Town of Hempstead is staying ‘on track’ by continuing to provide essential programs and services safely during the COVID-19 pandemic,” stated Supervisor Clavin. “I salute Town Clerk Kate Murray for the many innovative developments her office has implemented to continue serving the residents of America’s largest township.”
“Residents who commute via the Oceanside train station have expressed great satisfaction with the ‘stickerless’ and ‘contactless’ program over the past several months, and we are proud to expand this great service to commuters in Baldwin, Merrick, Bellmore, Wantagh and Seaford,” added Town Clerk Murray. “This entire application process can be completed online without ever leaving home and eliminates the need for the unpopular car bumper stickers. We encourage all commuters to take advantage of this great new program.” In the coming weeks, all commuters who currently have a parking permit at Baldwin, Merrick, Bellmore, Wantagh and Seaford will receive letters reminding them to renew their permits, which expire March 31st. Permit holders – and those who wish to apply for the first time – may do so by visiting hempsteadtown. com/townclerk on their phone, tablet or computer and filling out the brief application. The town will also be installing signs with QR codes at all of the above stations so that commuters can scan the code on their mobile devices and fill out the application while sitting on the train. The cost is $10 for the year (April 1st through March
31, 2022); and $5 for seniors (60 and over), veterans, handicapped, auxiliary police and volunteer fire and ambulance personnel. Parking permits are free for active military. Parking enforcement will be conducted by the Town of Hempstead Department of Public Safety using a state-of-the-art license plate scanning technology, so residents no longer need to replace stickers on their car bumpers each year. This makes the process safer and more efficient for both commuters and town personnel. This parking permit service is one the many programs that Town Clerk Murray has adapted during the COVID-19 pandemic to be safer and more efficient for both residents and town staff. These initiatives include trailers outside of Town Hall where residents can conduct town-related business such as obtaining birth and death certificates, various licenses, passports and other essential services. Town Clerk Murray has also officiated hundreds of safe, socially distanced weddings outside of Town Hall, at other beautiful destinations within the Town of Hempstead and via FaceTime and Zoom. “I am committed to providing these essential services to Town of

Public Skating Sessions for School Winter Recess Week Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson today announced that residents looking for a fun way to spend their winter recess can head to one of the Town’s ice skating facilities, where holiday hours will be in place. “For a fun, social distanced activity, residents and their
families can head out to one of the Town’s ice skating rinks – outdoors at Marjorie Post and Syosset-Woodbury Community Parks, and indoors at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “All three facilities will be offering special public sessions to provide children who are off from school with a fun-filled

Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition

The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) was founded in 1993 by three friends who lived in Babylon. Determined to fight against breast cancer by raising awareness and educating women, the BBCC with their dedicated volunteers undertook the task of completing a demographic survey to ascertain the incidence of breast cancer in Babylon. From this, a volunteer driven grass-roots organization grew, which serves the entire Township of Babylon, including those with all gynecological cancers in addition to those with breast cancer. Today they provide direct patient services and support to help ease the burdens that breast and all gynecological cancers put on patients and their families/caregivers. In addition to assisting in the basic needs of those battling cancer, they also reach out to the community at large, providing educational programs to encourage healthier lifestyles, which would decrease the still very high instance of these cancers in our community. Please note, if you do not live in this township, you can still reach out to the BBCC to find out who in your area can be of help to you. The BBCC’s premier program is titled Lend a Helping Hand (LAHH). Since its inception in 1996, this unique patient service program provides much needed stress relief for breast cancer patients currently in treatment, as well as their families confronting diagnosis and ensuing treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation. Later on, the BBCC expanded the LAHH program to include Babylon Township women undergoing treatment for all types of gynecological cancers. Some of the services this program offers include house cleaning, transportation to/from medical appointments, financial
assistance, child care, massage therapy, meal preparation and more. If you or someone you know can benefit from the LAHH program, please visit the BBCC’s website for more information and to fill out the LAHH Application. The BBCC has multiple upcoming events that they would like everyone to know about, anyone can join! The Care Behind Your Care: This is a virtual webinar that will take place on February 11th at 6pm. Physicians from The Cancer Institute at Good Samaritan Hospital will host a “mock tumor board”, exhibiting the interdisciplinary approach to patient care. $20 per person includes a sherpa lined throw and tote bag! Online Psychic Night: Join others for a gallery style reading as Georgia Rose channels messages from the other side! This will be a virtual event on February 19th at 7pm. Registration is $20 and those who will attend have the opportunity to partake in a raffle with great prizes! Scavenger Hunt Bingo: Play 5 rounds of Bingo from home! This virtual event is only $10 per person, which includes your first Bingo card (extra cards are $5 each). There is lots of fun to be had in this unique experinece on February 25th at 7:15pm. Although times are tough, the BBCC has a lot going on! Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar recently announced the official launch of its 5th annual Above and “BEE”yond Teacher Essay Contest, which recognizes top teachers – as nominated by their students – by rewarding them with a sponsorship check and end-of-year class party. The contest is being offered at Applebee’s restaurants in Long Island owned and operated by local franchisee Doherty Enterprises. Applebee’s will award two deserving teachers, one in Nassau County and one in Suffolk County, with a $500 sponsorship check to use toward their classroom for the upcoming 2021-2022 school year, along with an end-of-year party for their current class*! To nominate a teacher and enter the contest, students must submit an essay in-person at their local Applebee’s explaining why their teacher deserves to be Applebee’s “Teacher of the Year.” As an additional incentive, students who enter an essay will also receive a free ice cream certificate** for later use. Essay submissions are limited to one per student and will be accepted at participating Applebee’s restaurants from through Sunday March 7, no later than 10pm. Winners will be announced on Monday, April 12 and end-of-year parties will be thrown before Sunday, June 27. If end-ofyear parties are not viable, class parties will be replaced

Applebee’s 5th Annual Above and “BEE”yond Teacher Essay Contest
Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently announced that applications are now available for families to add the names of loved ones to the Town of Oyster Bay’s 9/11 Walls of Honor which recognize all those with a connection to the Town who gave their lives and succumbed in their battle against 9/11 related cancers and illness. Each September, the Town unveils newly inscribed names into the Walls of Honor which recognize
darker days ahead. We watch each week as more of these heroes pass, in an ever-increasing and unending number. Just as many of these rescue and recovery heroes raced to the Towers the first minute the plane hit, and stayed until the last brick was turned, their memorial stands with and lead us to those we lost that tragic Tuesday morning.” Reports from the World Trade Center Health program indicate that we are approaching
the family members, friends and neighbors lost to this toxic legacy. Supervisor Saladino stated, “We remember and give thanks to those who ran into danger in order to help the victims of a cowardly act of terror. This includes first responders, downtown workers, residents, students and so many others with cancer certified to be 9/11-related. The events of 9/11 continue to take our heroes and survivors – and members of our community will continue to face
a terrible milestone, in which approximately 43,000 people are being treated for medical problems and 10,000 people have suffered cancers linked to the toxic exposure at Ground Zero. More than 2,500 responders and others affected have succumbed to their illness. The 9/11 Walls of Honor were constructed under an initiative led by Supervisor Saladino, the Town Board and a volunteer committee that includes retired

Teachers Embrace Digital Tools
colleague Marie Savage explained that most people have an easier time solving equations by writing than typing, but because the touchscreen HP laptops all include a stylus, students can do their work on the computer with the same ease as if they were writing on a sheet of paper. Of course, pen, paper and calculators haven’t gone extinct from math classrooms either. With Microsoft Teams, teachers can connect with all students in the class, regardless of their location, and can even share the screen of any student to show an example of good work. Teacher Ryan Stephens likes the feature in which he can assign students for small-group work in virtual meeting rooms. This allows them to collaborate even if some of the students in the group are in school and the others are at home.
“Even if they’re not in the classroom, it’s like they are,” he said. Mr. Stephens said the technology aspect also provides more time for learning. If he wants to give his students a timed assignment, he simply sends it to their computers. The time saved handing out and collecting papers is additional time he gains to help students master math content. Kevin O’Reilly teaches statistics courses and their laptops are great tools for quickly and easily looking up data. When it comes time for research projects, in which students find and analyze data sets, they add their topic to a shared spreadsheet in Microsoft Forms so no two students pick the same idea. The math teachers said they are very appreciative for the high level of professional development they have received on how to incorporate these
different resources into their instruction and support all students in a hybrid learning model. Ms. Savage said that

The increased reliance on technology during the COVID-19 pandemic has been embraced by the math teachers at Seaford High School. With the hybrid instructional model, they have become accustomed to teaching students both in-person and at home at the same time, and have a variety to digital tools to do so. Through OneNote, teachers can distribute math worksheets for students to complete. Teacher Jessica DelGuercio said students essentially create a digital notebook that keeps all of their notes and assignments together in one place. It also is easier for teachers, who can review student work with just a few clicks. The devices provided to students by the district through the Personalized Digital Learning Initiative also work well for math. Ms. DelGuercio and her
