TERMS OF SALE Such tax liens shall be sold subject to any and all superior tax liens of sovereignties and other municipalities and to all claims of record which the County may have thereon and subject to the provisions of the Federal and State Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts. However, such tax liens shall have priority over the County’s Differential Interest Lien, representing the excess, if any, of the interest and penalty borne at the maximum rate over the interest and penalty borne at the rate at which the lien is purchased. The Purchaser acknowledges that the tax lien(s) sold pursuant to these Terms of Sale may be subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or may become subject to such proceedings which may be commenced during the period in which a tax lien is held by a successful bidder or the assignee of same, which may modify a Purchaser’s rights with respect to the lien(s) and the property securing same. Such bankruptcy proceedings shall not affect the validity of the tax lien. In addition to being subject to pending bankruptcy proceedings and/or the Federal and State Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Civil Relief Acts, said purchaser’s right of foreclosure may be affected by the Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery and Enforcement Act(FIRREA),12 U.S.C. ss 1811 et.seq., with regard to real property under Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation(FDIC) receivership. The County Treasurer reserves the right, without further notice and at any time, to withdraw from sale any of the parcels of land or premises herein listed. The Nassau County Treasurer reserves the right to intervene in any bankruptcy case/litigation where the property affected by the tax liens sold by the Treasurer is part of the bankruptcy estate. However,it is the sole responsibility of all tax lien purchasers to protect their legal interests in any bankruptcy case affecting their purchased tax lien, including but not limited to the filing of a proof of claim on their behalf, covering their investment in said tax lien. The Nassau County Treasurer and Nassau County and its agencies, assumes no responsibility for any legal representation of any tax lien purchaser in any legal proceeding including but not limited to a bankruptcy case where the purchased tax lien is at risk. The rate of interest and penalty at which any person purchases the tax lien shall be established by his bid. Each purchaser, immediately after the sale thereof, shall pay to the County Treasurer ten per cent of the amount for which the tax liens have been sold and the remaining ninety per cent within thirty days after such sale. If the purchaser at the tax sale shall fail to pay the remaining ninety per cent within ten days after he has been notified by the County Treasurer that the certificates of sale are ready for delivery, then all amounts deposited with the County Treasurer including but not limited to the ten per cent theretofore paid by him shall, without further notice or demand, be irrevocably forfeited by the purchaser and shall be retained by the County Treasurer as liquidated damages and the agreement to purchase shall be of no further effect. Time is of the essence in this sale. Nearly 40 student musicians from Seaford School District showcased their talents in the Nassau Music Educators Association All-County Music Festival at Tilles Center for the Performing Arts in Greenvale. Students were selected for the festival based on their New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) evaluations and teacher recommendations. Tax Return Service Available Hempstead Town Supervisor Anthony Santino has announced the town’s 2016 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program schedule. Trained VITA volunteers can provide seniors and residents with limited income with free assistance to prepare their federal and state income tax returns. The VITA program is sponsored by the Town of Hempstead’s Department of Senior Enrichment under the auspices of the Internal

Revenue Service. “Assigned to town senior centers and local libraries, VITA volunteers trained by the town have provided invaluable aid to residents for over 40 years,” said Santino. “Our competent VITA volunteers stand ready to help citizens obtain the maximum allowable refund this tax season.” Participants must bring last year’s tax return (2014), all wage, Social Security and earning statements

(W-2 and 1099, and 1095, if applicable), all interest, dividend, capital gains, IRAs, annuities and pension statements, 2015 property tax receipts, STAR exemption records, itemized expense records, social security cards and photo identification of all those filing tax returns. Most VITA sites require that an appointment be made in advance. In addition, some VITA locations are equipped to file tax returns electronically. “I encourage any senior

citizen or resident with limited income who is interested in having his or her tax return prepared free of charge to select one of our 17 VITA locations and take advantage of this excellent service,” concluded Santino. PARP is a PTA-sponsored initiative to promote a collaborative reading effort in school and in the home,

Students were encouraged to read at least 15 minutes per day with their parents and complete weekly activity logs that not only enhanced the reading

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m willing to go out on a limb to say that even those who would count winter as their favorite season do not enjoy driving in the snow and icy conditions it brings, especially if they live on Long Island. Just the other morning, after a surprise helping of the white stuff, I was reminded of the joys of a morning commute in about six inches of slush… The privilege of driving behind those with an aversion to cleaning off their rooftops and back windows… The honor of inching behind drivers who seem to think that to surpass 20 mph would be criminal… The thrill of testing out my brakes every car length or so, as people ahead come to a screeching halt due to…what, exactly? I couldn’t tell you.

Sure, I understand the anxiety which can come from being forced to travel in such conditions – to a degree. But when a few select drivers and their inability to, you know, drive are the cause? Well, that’s where I lose patience. I’m pretty sure they teach this stuff in driver’s ed, in defensive driving courses – or in the big old handbook known as common sense. It’s not rocket science people. #1. You need to see the road, so clean windows and mirrors are a must. #2. The rest of us need to see the road as well, so having an 18-inch clump of snow fly off the back of someone’s car into your windshield… not the most conducive to aforementioned point. #3. Brakes do not respond well on wet pavement, snow or ice – so it is best to

refrain from slamming on them for no good reason. Simply letting up on the gas pedal and, oh yes, steering can work wonders. These are just a few of the more important points I encountered on my journey to work, on a 20-mile straight stretch of road with no fewer than a dozen or so drivers wreaking havoc. We’ve been fortunate this winter, but that’s not to say we have been – or will be – spared completely. A few more morning or evening rush hours like that, and we’ll all be counting down the days to spring. Stay tuned next week as Buddy the Betta celebrates his much-anticipated 1st Birthday in the bowl and offers his take on this thing called “Valentine’s” Day.

Light Keepers Behind the Scenes Tour Saturday, February 13th, at 9 a.m. Follow one of the presendday Lighthouse Keepers on his rounds. This bottom to top tour takes you from the auxiliary generator and the Light Keepers workshop in the basement of the Keeper’s Quarters to the beacon in the lantern room of the Lighthouse tower. *** Lighthouses Are for Lovers Saturday, February 13th, from 4 to 6 p.m.

Enjoy the sunset with “someone special.” Climb the tower and enjoy refreshments served at sunset on the terrace. A free flower and chocolates will be given out to couples with reservations. *** Celebrate Presidents Week at the Fire Island Lighthouse Monday, February 15th through Friday, February 19th There will be reduced Tower Tour fees for children under 12 years old. There will also be crafts for children from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.

*** Early Morning Tower Tour Sunday, February 21st, at 6:10 a.m. Enjoy the scenery from the topof the tower as the sun rises. Tour includes a light breakfast.
